If you want to taste a "real" roti this is the spot. The roti is light and flaky with the channa flour producing the texture that you would expect froma caribbean kitchen. I has the goat roti and the meat was tender, with no fat or bone and very nicely seasoned. Anyone who hasn't tried curry goat should sample a goat roti as a nice introduction. The meat is similar to beef and very tasty when cooked properly as it is at Rehannah's. The roti I have sampled at other places in Vancouver claiming to be caribbean restaurants comes off as a soggy, flavourless pancake next to what you can find at Rehanah's.
The only drawback is that they appear to keep strange hours. We got there at about 3:pm on a Saturday and they were already closing up for the day. Best to call before you go so as not to be disappointed.
On a standard weekend trip to the mall, I was thrilled to see this new addition to the Lansdowne Centre food court (in the spot where a New York Fries used to be). I had both a deep-fried cheese empanada and a baked beef version. They were both great - cheese one was nice and flaky as expected, the beed was well-seasoned and not too greasy. Well worth the drive to Richmond.
the reef seems popular and a cool hang out, but as far as authentic caribbean cuisine goes it leaves a lot to be desired. i have been to this location twice, and also to the one on main. the only thing worth going for in my opinion are the johnny cakes and the excellent selection of caribbean rum and beer. the roti is disgusting and is more like thick a pancake than a light, channa roti you would expect. i'm not saying you have to be from the caribbean to cook caribbean...but anyone who is will be extremely disappointed by the Reef's Canadian spin on island classics.
there are a few sushi spots in our neighborhood, but sushi hachi keeps us coming back. food is always good, comes quickly, and prices are quite low for this neighborhood. they have an excellent special box combo deal at dinner for $12.99. i especially like the tempura udon soup - a great value at $6.
so being relatively new to vancity, we decided to try out all of the chain eateries that we don't have back east. having been to cactus club and earl's previously, i have to say that my experience at moxie's was the best.
for a quick and easy friday night out this location served up superior quality food, attentive service and zero attitude. we had a nice mini-corona special to start, and some interesting sun-dried tomatoe spring rolls with goat cheese. not amazing, but decent. our mains were great. i had a sirloin salad that was very fresh, and the meat was perfectly cooked. my co-diner had a curry rice bowl that was very nicely seasoned - surprisingly so. i even liked that banana bread served with the salad, a very nice touch. two thumbs up.
We're new to Vancouver and are so glad to have found a great Pho place. I recommend the House Special Pho - a spicy coconut broth with rare beef. The spring rolls are also very good. I've been there twice now and the food is great. Seems to be popular locals and folks from all backgrounds. Highly recommend it if you liek Pho and Vietnamese cuisine.
We live in Kerrisdale which as many of you know, does not exactly have a lot of stellar or exciting dining options. Case in point - even a chain restaurant such as White Spot has crappy food. We have eaten there a handful of times, and basically anything not deep fried or grilled is totally disgusting. I don't expect amazing food when I go to the Spot, but the vegetables they serve are rotten, wilted and gross. This is the third time this has happened to me when ordering a salad or entree with a garnish, so I know they must be using produce that is past its due.
