Our first time at Gerry's new location...
Submitted Wednesday, August 6, 2008 - 5:53pm [Dine in]

We used to go to India Bistro across the street frequently with another couple of friends when we all lived in the West End. Gerry the current host at the All India Restaurant on Davie used to do the same job across the street at India Bistro. So when we found out he'd moved across the street we decided to try his new digs, even if only for the entertainment value the old queen gives along with his warm welcome.

The food was just as good as India Bistro only with more generous portions I think. My partner said his chicken tandoori was better than India Bistro. We will definitely go back to try the buffet at lunch sometime. The atmosphere is a little less comfortable and "authentically Indian" than India Bistro, but the food makes up for it.

Best gluten free bread I've had...
Submitted Monday, May 26, 2008 - 8:01pm [Dine in]

I have tried a few gluten free breads, but the brown rice bread from here is the best I've had. The only kind so far I have experienced fresh enough that you can eat it with just some butter like any other type of fresh bakery bread. Getting the brown rice bread when it is totally fresh and making a sandwich out of it at home is pure bliss. I never thought I'd experience bread this good again after finding out I had to give up wheat/gluten.

The baked goods here aren't cheap, but they aren't a lot more than what you'd pay at a regular bakery with similar quality. Besides you save your receipts and use them for a deduction on your income taxes. The core team of owners/bakers are very friendly and provide good service. Yeah the service from their newer hires sucks sometimes, but they are a busy place and there's a labour shortage right now. This has caused them to be closed on numerous Sundays without any notice unfortunately. Its sad when I want a fresh muffin fix on a Sunday afternoon.

Speaking of which the muffins here are awesome and often sell out early. Get there early on Saturdays particularly. The Saturday only cinnamon rolls are pretty good, but for the money they cost I'd stick with the fresh muffins. Their chocolate chip ginger cookies are to die for. It is good I don't live near Panne Rizo because I would be a lot poorer and a lot fatter if I did!

Love me some Nando's

We had a friend who's a picky eater take us to the Kerrisdale location the first time we went so we knew it had to be fairly decent. I was very happy to see signs and construction at the old vet clinic on the corner of Cornwall Avenue & Walnut Street saying that a Nando's was coming. Its a few doors down from the gluten/wheat free bakery Panne Rizo that I go to frequently which for me is a bonus as Nando's offers a lot of gluten free options. This location also offers free underground parking which in that area of Kits is a bonus.

Nando's in general has good chicken at relatively decent prices. I recommend the peri fries they are very good and I am very particular about fries. If I'm going to eat something naughty like fries I want them to be good! There are a good variety of other sides that are more healthy than fries and you can request your chicken skinless as well.

My only complaint about this particular location has been about staffing levels during peak times. The management always seems to keep very minimal staff on the counter. I don't know if its on purpose because they are cheap or just from the labour shortage. The girls who do work there do their best, but really seem to need more help. There seems to be a high turn over rate of counter staff to so it could be that management are just cheap jerks.

Ma's is now Chan Nam Kee Restaurant

We live across the street from the former Ma's Restaurant. A few weeks ago they were closed for a few days then a sign crew came along and put up a new restaurant name on the awning. Then there were some big Chinese flower things out front, "Congratulations on your Grand Opening" type things. We haven't been across the street to check it out yet, but will try it as the quality at Kent's Kitchen and their limited hours make it less appealing despite their low prices.

Great experience every time.
Submitted Monday, May 26, 2008 - 6:52pm [Dine in]

We started going to Khunnai Chang shortly after they first open just before we moved out of the neighbourhood. We still go back down to the West End at least once a month to eat there and the food is always excellent and the owners extremely friendly and welcoming. We have recommended this place to multiple friends and they always return telling us how good it was. We walked in New Year's Eve without a reservation about 7.00pm with a group of six people and they quickly and happily accommodated us. Very good, reasonably priced food every time.
