Too fast.

Recently had dinner at this restaurant for I think the fourth or fifth time. Previous outings have been pretty good except for the ill-conceived blue cheese-cheesecake which was horrible beyond description. This time however I think service took a nose dive when I orderd an appetizer, which my son and I were enjoying, only to have our dinners arrive mid dish. For any service staff out there paying attention, LISTEN UP! DO NOT BRING THE MEAL WHEN AN APPETIZER IS BEING EATEN!!!!!!! You can serve more drinks and get a bigger tip if you extend the dinning experience. The restaurant in this case was not crowded, nor close to closing. I can only think the message is get the hell out.

La Trattoria22214 Dewdney Trunk Rd., Maple Ridge
Holster That Spray Clean Bottle Partner
Submitted Monday, April 27, 2009 - 9:03pm [Dine in]

La Trattoria is one of the few fine dinning places that is available in the Ridge and has been an enjoyable place since it opened. We went there recently for our anniversary and were looking forward to good food served in a nice quiet spot. Food was good, but the waiter with the spray bottle was over the top. It didn't seem to matter that he was spraying clouds of noxious cleaner throughout the restaurant or that the sound of his spray bottle resembled the fart scene in the movie Blazzing Sadlles. The few tables left dining in the restaurant gave looks and stares of annoyance as we did, but to no avail. The behaviour of serving staff is an obvious message to patrons, get the hell out I want to go home. I like this place and will return. If the waiter pulls out that spray bottle I will ask him to holster that puppy so us rednecks can enjoy our chow.

Horizons100 Centennial Way, Burnaby
Night out on top of the world was downhill.

I have to say that my wife and I were both looking forward to our evening at the Horizon's Restaurant, situated atop Burnaby Mountain. Back in the summer we had shown up without a reservation and were turned away. The next time we headed out for an evening of fine dining we would make a reservation at Horizon's to avoid disappointment. This evenings outing was a disappointment.

The service was inattentive to say the least. The restaurant was abounding with staff and not many customers, yet we were ignored if not neglected throughout the evening. We were not served our wine until after the food came. When the main course was presented, we were left to forage for cutlery from surrounding tables as the service staff did not want to acknowledge our eye contact or hand signals for help.

The food was in one word, lifeless. The first course for myself was clams & mussels which were over cooked and placed into a bowl with cream sauce. Normally you would expect the seafood to be finished off or tossed with the sauce before plating, but this looked over steamed then plopped into the sauce. The two main entrees were Seafood Cioppino and Beef Short Ribs . The seafood cioppino was an identical preparation to the first course, over steamed rubbery seafood and plop in sauce method. The beef short ribs were likewise steamed or perhaps boiled as the the meat was grey and tough. Short ribs should be dark and pull from the bone easily with a rich texture that melts in your mouth. This dish was not pleasing to the eye. It was chewy and bland in taste.

As to the ambiance, the lighting was glaring and did allow a quant dining experience. The view which is, no doubt spectacular, is effected by the over-lighting of the restaurant. I considered the ambiance OK at best.

Overall value...poor.
