Sushi Oyama5152 Kingsway, Burnaby
Best sushi restaurant near metrotown
Submitted Sunday, June 21, 2009 - 6:43pm [Dine in]

The recent renos, the fantastic patio, and the seriously well done sushi at a reasonable price make this place a solid recommendation. Service has been slow a couple times I've been, but is always very very friendly and nice.

Compared to the other places in the neighborhood, this has the best ambience and is the place to go for a nice relaxed sushi dinner.

Hi Dozo Sushi702 6th Avenue, New Westminster
Best sushi in new west and burnaby
Submitted Saturday, December 20, 2008 - 2:10pm [Dine in]

I used to live in new west, and still go back there to visit this place... although they had a bit of a lull while some new owners took over a while back, it's definately on track now - good atmosphere, a varied menu, proper plating, and really fantastic fresh food. This isn't the cheapest sushi you'll find around, but as someone who prefers quality over food poisioning, I'll keep making the trek back to Hi Dojo!

Very... mediocre
Submitted Tuesday, October 7, 2008 - 3:12pm [Dine in]

Live in the neighborhood and have been here a few times... it's always been mediocre, tho not really fresh (mushy ingredients, no crispness, bland flavors). The last time I was there, we walked in and something smelt incredibly unwell -- like something was rotting in there... it was hard to work up an appetite with that smell, so we left and went to Daimasu instead.

Surprisingly good chinese food
Submitted Sunday, March 23, 2008 - 7:44pm [Dine in]

Though from the outside this place looks like it should be condemned, they really make up for it with quality and service. The food is always fresh, prepared quickly, and the servers are very friendly. For reliably good, cheap chinese food, I've yet to find any place better!

I will never set foot in this restaurant again.
Submitted Saturday, September 15, 2007 - 7:29pm [Dine in]

I've been to Anducci's by Lougheed a number of times, and though it's hit and miss, it encouraged me and my other half to visit the Hastings location last Thursday night.

When dinner arrived, mine came out wrong (ordered a tomato cream sauce, and it came out with a white wine sauce). I asked about the sauce, and the waitress said 'The kitchen screwed up - i'll get them to make another', which they did while I sat there mealless and my other half started in... When it did arrive, as with both meals, the pasta was overcooked and a mushy mess.

I asked for a dirty martini, which should *not* be made with raspberry vodka (raspbery + olive = ugh). I mentioned this to the waitress and she went to the bartender who made another, which again had raspberry in it.

When we got the bill and the waitress had overcharged for the (incorrectly made) martinis. She sighed when I menitoned it, and looked put out to have to correct the bill.

No discount or apology for having to wait 10 minutes for my dinner while my other half ate, no discount or apology on the martinis with unwanted raspberry, and attitude when I pointed out that the bill was incorrect!

You can tell this place isn't a serious restaurant, as the kitchen, floor and bar are all staffed by 19 year olds who seem more interested in giving their friends a place to hang out than focusing on taste and service.

dim something else
Submitted Tuesday, January 2, 2007 - 9:30pm [Dine in]

Many times I've tried to go to Top Gun only to find a huge lineup, so I'd have to go across the street to Big Lai. Luckily this past weekend, some friends and I were able to get a table relatively quickly, and I've got to say it was well worth the wait.

Food: The food was much better than any other Dim Sum I've had around town (most weekends can be found bouncing between Floata in Chinatown, Pink Pearl on Hastings, or Big Lai in Burnaby). The menu didn't offer a huge selection, but everything we ordered blew our tastebuds away, and was light and not greasy (as I find a lot of dim sum to be). Even the tea they served was delicious. There were people around us who were obviously better versed with the menu and ordering enjoying amazing hot pots with noodles and crab and seasonings that smelled absolutely delicious.

Service: The service we received was very prompt and attentive, helped us with suggestions and took 10% off our bill [still not sure why, but it'll keep me coming back!]. I would definately recommend making reservations if you're going on a weekend.

Price: A little more expensive than other dim sum (and especially in the chinese cafeteria chaos of Big Lai across the street), but it's well worth a try for the quality and taste.

Terrible ambience, offensive service and disgusting sashimi
Submitted Tuesday, January 2, 2007 - 9:15pm [Dine in]

Although it is always busy, I can't believe people go back here. The ambience as loud and annoying as a cafeteria, and the service is offensively slow and rude.

The portions were as buffet-esquely large as described, but I prefer to have my sushi tasty, nicely presented, and bite sized - I don't want to have to be an adult film star in order to fit the rolls into my mouth (or even worse, have to bite them in half and have it spill forth).

To those who are impressed with their sashimi, I'll get out of the way of your Hummer as there's likely no arguing with your 'bigger is better' ideals. Unfortunately for visitors with even a modicum of taste, you'll likely be revolted by their mushy, partially frozen, chunks of fish that bear no resemblance to the the skillfully sliced tasty sashimi you might actually be trying to order.

I can't believe that people continue to give this restaurant any support when there are so many other better options within the few blocks surrounding Metrotown (Tomoya for example).

Fantastic and reliable
Submitted Thursday, September 21, 2006 - 12:24pm [Dine in]

Having made an effort to visit as many sushi places in the lower mainland as possible, I find myself back at Kirin more often than any.

The food is reliably good, and the ambience is surprisingly nice for where it's located.

Their $8 Lucky Choice lunch special is a good cheap fill, and it's still one of the only places around I've found Koloke (try it, they're great!)

Definately worth checking out

The meal ruined my appetite
Submitted Thursday, September 21, 2006 - 12:19pm [Dine in]

I've gone to the Thirsty Duck 3 times - once with a friend for wing night, and they ran out of wings... The other two times I went was with a group of about 10 people for Sunday brunch and these were both absolute disasters.

The first time we went, I got my breakfast cold and undercooked 3x in a row. I wasn't the only person in the group who got unsafe eggs. No apologies were given, they just grunted and went in the back to redo them.

We thought we'd give it a chance at redemption, and went back for brunch again -- huge mistake. Out of our group of 10, a couple got their meals and started eating. An hour and a half later everyone else was still waiting for their meals... the reason? "We ran out of eggs and have to send someone to go get more." It took them almost 2 hours to get the rest of the meals to us, with no apologies and a huge effort to even make them acknowledge us.

It might be a good place to go for a drink, but if you are interested in good service and actually getting your meal, definately avoid this place!
