Knight and Day Restaurant1061 Denman Street, Vancouver
Best in it's category

Too many places on Denman of this caliber are mediocre at best. The food is like you would make at home.... from scratch. NOT out of a package like all the other casual places in the area.

You can have a nice meal and not feel high from all the food additives like you would if you went to the Grove, Teresa's or Joe's (blechhhh).

I was in heaven... me being the "appetizer" guy, I had my first taster menu experience; which I will return for and seek out at other restaurants.

I liked the 3 different options available for the 6 course tasting menu... 1) Choose your own menu items and wines. 2) Choose your wine and let the staff create 6 courses paired with your wine for you. 3) Let the staff choose your 6 courses and your wines; paired for you. Opted for the 6 course with wine pairings, letting the staff decide on all of our food and wine. Added a few extras on, which gave us a 9 course! Like I said, I was in heaven.

Note: There are other menu options available, you don't have to do 6 courses.

Service was great, Lori was sweet and fun. I sat at the bar before my partner joined.... you can see everything in the kitchen from the bar. I love a restaurant that isn't afraid to let you see behind the scenes; they seemed comfortable with the fact that I stared at them for half an hour while they worked. They were having a great time creating, tasting and criticising their fruits.

Dessert was an unexpected surprise... 3 little chocolate goodies (each completely different, with some freshly made strawberry ice cream and a strawberry dipped in white chocolate), a tiny mug of hot milk with grand marnier, another tiny mug with hot chocolate in it and a glass of port on the side. mmmmmmmmmm

Including a 25% tip... it was well worth what I paid. I went hog wild and had a cocktail, a 9 course dinner, 5 glasses of wine (2 ounce), a glass of port, a bottle of sparkling water and an americano coffee.

I'm adding this one to my top ten list. Oh, and a little birdy told me the chef loves to go shopping at the market each day, lurking out "rare" items... hence the name, hence the game?

Delilah's1789 Comox Street, Vancouver
Still a gem

I recently moved back to Vancouver, and hadn't been to Delilah's since their original location around 15 years ago. The new one is larger, but it feels the same. I'd say I remember the martinis, but I had too many :)

The food is way better! Same menu idea, where you fill out your own order with a pencil (I love that)... 2 or 4 course dinners; how come they don;t have a 3 course? I don't do dessert... actually I do liquid dessert, I like the java martini, it has espresso in it yummy.

We liked the appetizer part of the menu better, not that there was anything about the entrees we didn;t like, we just never eat entrees when we dine out... we like to share stuff. They said we could order appy's a la carte so we had all of them, around 8 I think. Crispy prawns, beef tartare, drunk quail (guess it had martinis too), bison carpacio... and I can't remember the rest of them.

The service could have been better, but they were super busy and we got everything we asked for, it just took a bit of time. The staff were all really nice, we liked their cheeryness in spite of the fact that they were "in the weeds" (one of them told us they got slammed) so they had a lot of people to deal with. They also told us it was the first night they put out a new menu, so in spite of all that, we got treated well. We will definitely go back.
