Great breakfast, good value

My wife and try to find new breakfast joints to enjoy our Saturday morning dates and were not disappointed when we went to Honey's. We had gone kayaking with some friends one evening and our friend had hoped that Honey's would be open. She was disappointed to find out that it was closed. She was really hoping to get theri magical donuts.

So, the following morning on my weekly cycling "tour" with some friends we rode to Deep Cove and stopped by Honey's and I had their delicious rolly polly doughnuts. The donut was fantastic. The donuts had a "krispy" thin shell , had a "rolly and polly" shape to them and slathered with a chocolate frosting. Very simple and very fresh with three frostings - chocolate, maple and HONEY-glaze. I knew I should have bought a couple to take home but forgot, so I thought I would take my wife there the following week.

We got there just before the lineup went through the door and to the lamp-post at the sidewalk. My wife had a hard-time deciding on the large selection of freshly baked muffins and scones. From the Baden Powell (blackberry) muffin to those very seedy, healthy-looking ones. But she finally decided on a blueberry peach muffin and gave it thumbs up. She's not into the sweet and cakey muffins - this was was light and tasty and all-around delicious.

I had the Egg's Bennie special: it came with fresh fruit and homefries. There wasn't the excess of hollandaise that I usually encounter with bennies, just the right amount. The coffee was self-serve and we're always overjoyed when they have brewed decaf. And to top it off, the coffee tasted great! We always do without the caffeine and love good coffee.

No surprises which is what we like and a fairly basic though comfortable seating despite the crowd. There were no more outdoor tables so we took a table by the window. Very cool to have breakfast with scenery of the tree-ladened slopes around Deep Cove. It felt like we were on vacation, which is why ambiance rating is 4. Honey's definately had a "buzz" to it as there were kayakers, cyclists and the outdoor/North Van types there as well as families. This is full of locals for sure and destination kayakers who likely stop in after a morning of kayaking. There was another coffee shop open a few stores down with very few takers, but people were just spilling onto the streets from Honey's.

We brought home some donuts home for our children. One of our sons is in the baking and pastry arts program at VCC. He has pretty discerning taste and thought very highly of the rolly polly donuts.

It was a bit of a drive for us to get there from Vancouver, but well worth it. I'm sure I'll be stopping in every so often with my cycling buddies when we do the Deep Cove route and I think I'll also have to go kayaking more often...can't forget my Saturday morning dates with my wife as well - destination Honey's!
