Can you tell pork from lamb?
Submitted Sunday, May 31, 2009 - 6:06pm [Dine in]

I used to enjoy going to this restaurant quite a lot. They serve a variety of Asian dishes, including Taiwanese and Chinese items. Service was always just OK - decent but nothing exceptional. What really drew me in was the food.

This all changed the last few times that I went there. What used to be delicious, fresh food gradually became stale and undercooked. I ordered a plate of steamed sea bass and it tasted like it had been sitting in the freezer for a year.

Worst of all, the last time I went there and ordered their stir-fried lamb dish, they substituted it with pork and told me that it was lamb. This was at the height of the swine flu, and so I guess people who didn't know better stayed away from the pork, and so the restaurant was trying to get rid of their stock. So, instead of "recommending" the pork dishes to us, they ignored our orders and used pork instead. And when I confronted the waitress, she insisted that it was lamb...

Very disappointed.

Poor service.

My family went there on a Sunday after deciding that an adjacent restaurant was too crowded to eat comfortably at. This particular restaurant didn't seem as busy as the one we left, and so we went it. Initial service was OK, and by that I mean someone quickly met us at the front and directed to our seats. After that, everything went downhill.

We wait for around 15 minutes while surveying the menu, but no one came. We finally managed to wave over one of the waiters, but just as he was approaching us, he turned to another table that arrived AFTER we did and asked if they've been served - not a good sign but definitely forgivable. What really bugged us was the fact that after he was told by that other table that they have not been served yet, the waiter plainly IGNORED us and walked past us to fetch a menu for that other table. The restaurant was NOT that busy, but he couldn't spare the time to ask US if we've been served or WHY we had waved him over in the first place!

Now insulted, the family got up a left, and as we were walking out, my mother told a passing waiter that the service was disappointing, and guess what - he ignored her completely.

The restaurant definitely looks enticing, with good ambiance and furnishings - but their service has too improve before I'll go back again, if ever.

Decent food in decent environment

I've been eating at this restaurant for years. The food is above average though a little on the expensive side. However, after eating at SEVERAL restaurants in the Vancouver/Richmond area, I've come to the conclusion that Lam Chu Kee is one of the FEW establishments to offer consistent good service and decent food. Their 9pm night "snack" hours are pretty good, you get free congee if you order over a set price ($20 as I can remember).

Don't eat here...ever!

Taiwan Beef Noddle House used to be a VERY GOOD restaurant - but NOT ANY MORE! Go to the "Old Wang's Taiwanese Beef Noddle House" that's located a few blocks NORTH of this restaurant.

They have changed management & ownership and the quality of their food has declined steadily afterwards: portions have gotten smaller & the quality/freshness of the dishes have declined dramatically.

One example: the vegetable dumplings used to be eight large pieces and tasted very fresh - now it's still 8 pieces, but considerably smaller yet at the same price; it also tastes kind of stale like it was just plucked out of the freezer and thrown in the microwave.

Another example: the tofu used be very fresh and very tasty - but just last night when I ordered again it tasted bad - like it's way past its suggested expiration date yet still served with LOTS of sauce to cover up its original taste. The important point here: after eating the tofu, both my parents & I felt our lips swollen up a little with a bit of rash - it lasted for hours!

The service remains relatively the same - slow yet not overly rude. They don't have business cards anymore - at least not ones with their restaurant's name on it - when I asked for one the waiter gave me this card that says: coffee lounge - but with their phone number on it, which I thought was kind of fishy.

Overall, this restaurant has markedly declined since change of ownership - and I suspect that it's not owned by the original Taiwanese owner, but rather by Chinese owners.

Essentially, don't every go here!
