Sushi Hut Japanese Restaurant1947 Kingsway, Vancouver
Fast Service, Good Food
Submitted Thursday, May 28, 2009 - 6:18pm [Dine in]

Small sushi restaurant with a few tables. We ordered some salmon nigiri, a chicken don and a dinner bento box. For $1.25, the salmon nigiri was fresh and lots of fish. Very similar to the ones you get at Sushi Garden. The bento box was a good value for just under $10. It was a standard meal with chicken teriyaki, miso soup, rice, salad, and tempura. Tempura was very fresh and hot when we received it. The only disappointing item was the $6 chicken don. It was only chicken with no vegetables. The chicken was crispy and tasted great, but it just felt like there was someting missing when all I was eating was chicken and rice.

Service was good. Server came by to refill on tea, gave updates on our food status, and gave our bill promptly when requested. Standard pricing for this type of food. Ambiance is like many Japanese sushi restaurants. Wooden tables and chairs. The place was clean. A bit on the cramp side as there isn't much space between the tables.

It's about the comfort food and cheap breakfast special!
Submitted Thursday, May 28, 2009 - 3:30pm [Dine in]

I only came here because we were in the area and my friend suggested this place.

Food was decent for the price you pay. Really greasy though. One person ordered the breakfast special for $3, another person ordered the daily sandwich and soup, and I ordered fish and chips. I don't recommend the fish and chips as the fish was soggy. However, it was a great deal for $7. I had 3 pieces, lots of fries and couldn't finish the meal. The bacon and tomatoe sandwich had loads of mayo. The vegetable soup was really salty.

Service was decent. It only took about 15 mins for our food to arrive.
Great value for the amount of food you get.

Ambiance is not my cup of tea. I got a good laugh at the very old Britney Spear's poster and other celebrities pasted all over the place. You can read the previous posts about the ambiance.

If I am in the area and wanted some cheap comfort food, I will consider going back then.

Some Really Good Fusion Food
Submitted Thursday, May 28, 2009 - 9:45am [Dine in]

I really wanted to try this restaurant because I have never tried Indian/Chinese fusion food. It was a great dining experience.

Food was good. It was a good spicy! We ordered deep fried mini buns, ginger chicken, beef curry with vegatables, crispy noodle with seafood and rice. The mini buns were tasty and fluffy. Not spectatcular, but something to try as we wanted a small item to start as we were very hungry. However, that item came after all the other food items arrived. The beef curry dish and the side order of rice came first. It's more chinese inspired to me. Lots of gravy sauce to go with the rice! It was really mild and went well with the rice. The next dish was the ginger chicken. Seems like the chicken had been cooked in advance and wasn't reheated properly? The sauce was warm, but some of the chicken was not. The batter on the chicken was soggy for the parts that didn't have any sauce on it. Nevertheless, it was very flavorful. I would have prefered it if the dish was actually warmed up properly. I might try that dish another time just to see if they can make it better. The last dish was the crispy noodle and that was the best dish! The noodles was so cripsy to the very end. Just enough sauce to make the nooldes soft so it was a mix of texture in every bite. I will definitely order that dish again.

Service was standard. They didn't come by to clear out dishes so we stacked everything ourselves. The restaurant was really busy though.

Value is about the same price as other chinese restaurants. The portion is slightly smaller. Rice was well-priced when I compare it to other restaurants. You will need to order rice to go with all those dishes unless you ordered noodles.

Ambiance is nice. One side of the restaurant is painted with a mountain scenery. The other side had some Indian inspired frames of elephants and such. Decor is pretty good. Much better than what I expected from the outside of the restaurant.

Will go back again.

Who would have thought that this can taste so good?
Submitted Saturday, May 23, 2009 - 12:45am [Dine in]

I was in the area with 2 other people and we wanted a quick bite. We decided to try this place as we were walking along Commercial.

It is $2 for a slice of pizza or $4.75 for two slices and a pop. For the four slices of pizze we had, the worst one that you should avoid is the ham and pineapple. It was dry as the sauce had evaporated?? There didn't seem to be any cheese on it either. It's better to eat that a ham and pineapple pizza elsewhere. The other three slices were amazing. Real slices of bacon, eggplant and potatoes chunks was loaded on the pizza with cheese that you can actually taste!

Service wasn't good. There was a customer who waited too long and just left. We had to wait for the only guy working there to finish he job making other pizzas. He gave us our pizza and we paid.

Ambiance is nice. Seats were comfy and the place was clean. There was a flat screen TV to watch music videos.

Large Portions!!
Submitted Friday, May 22, 2009 - 2:53pm [Dine in]

Came here yesterday with two others at around 7:30 pm and there was a line up! Took about 20 mins before there was a table for us.

We had calamari as a starter. Ice tea for drinks. Two of us ordered the peppercorn new york steak entrees and the other person ordered the daily dinner special which was a grilled salmon fillet entree. All entrees are served with salad, potatoes, rice and garlic toast.

The value is amazing. Large portions for the price you pay for. The 6 oz steaks was just under $10. We didn't realize that the salmon special was basically $6 until we asked for the bill! My friend also had leftovers to take home because she couldn't finish everything.

Service was a bit slow because the place was full. They had a kitchen guy? clearning plates, packing up food and grabbing the servers' attention when someone wanted to order food. It was good that they had extra help. However, watching him pace back and forth between the tables when there was nothing for him to do can be distracting at times. The restaurant isn't that big so it didn't take long for him to be walking by our table once again.

They have dinner specials Mondays to Thursdays. They have lunch specials as well from Mondays to Saturdays. Food quality is consistent. Calamari was a bit soggy. Large quantity for the price you pay for compared to other places. Everything else was good. They messed up on my steak order. It was the first time it has ever happened to me. I ordered medium and ended up with a well-done piece of meat. I didn't complain because they were so busy and my friend offered half of his steak anyways.

Ambiance is a bit on the dim side. It does have a pub feel and there were quite a few tables with their pitcher special and people sitting in the bar section watching some game that was going on.

Will go back to try their other dinner specials.

Great location. Lots of seats. Pretty standard coffee.
Submitted Friday, May 22, 2009 - 2:27pm [Dine in]

Been to here many times as it is a great location and there are always seats available. The ambiance is really nice. Lots of room and you are not too close to your neighbours. I prefer sitting inside as traffic is quite busy on Hastings.

I haven't tried their food items as I find it overpriced. The coffee is okay. Nothing impressive at this location. I have tried almost everything. Their chai latte is my favorite. However, I have had better elsewhere, but I still come to this location because of the location.

Service can be slow as the staff do like to talk to each other at times. However, I can't blame them because I see people chatting everywhere regardless and I'm never in a hurry when I am getting my caffine fix.

Great Special
Submitted Wednesday, May 20, 2009 - 7:47pm [Dine in]

We stopped by to order one large pizza with 5 regular toppings for $12.99. Awesome deal for the number and amount of toppings you get. It's not like other places where you get toppings diced up to small pieces (i.e. you actually see the mushroom slices). There are deluxe toppings to choose from, but are considered to be two regular toppings. Topping selection is good. Lots to choose from (e.g. ham, spinach leaves, garlic, potatoe, butter chicken). Pizza crust is okay. I have had better. It's chewy and I think it's thin crust. Nonethe less, I will go back if I want a cheap pizza with loads of toppings.

Ambiance is on the boring side. There is a mounted picture of Mona Lisa haning on the wall. Small eat-in area with a few seats. You can see the whole working area filled with supplies and the staff making your pizza. This place is meant for take-out or delivery.

Decent Chinese Food
Submitted Monday, May 18, 2009 - 8:48pm [Dine in]

Went here today for lunch as the chinese restaurant nearby was packed and we didn't want to wait. When we got there, we were the only customers. It was odd, but we decided to eat here anyways as we didn't want to drive elsewhere.

Food was pretty solid. We ordered chicken with vegetables and black bean sauce, non-spicy tofu on rice, wonton noodle soup, and chicken with salted fish on rice. We asked for ice water and we got tap water. When we asked for ice to go with the water, the server then told us that the ice machine was broken. She could have told us in advance so we could have gotten tea instead.

Service was not the best. Servers were busy talking to each other, but it's like that in many chinese places. We did have to ask one of the servers to clear our empty places. They were fast at giving us the bill without us flagging them down.

Value is reasonable. Entrees run about $8-10 a plate. They have specials to choose from.

Ambiance is kinda plain. Lots of white walls with Chinese/English words of their specials. Some photos of the food items hanging on the walls as well. I will go back there for food and not for the ambiance.

Submitted Monday, May 18, 2009 - 11:42am [Dine in]

I was in the area and decided to order off of the DQ Sweet Deals. It is a menu of nine food different items. I choose the 3 items for $5 option. The size isn't consistent between locations. In this location, the chicken wrap only had one small piece of lettuce that looked like leftovers from the original bag it came from. There was barely any sauce in the wrap. So basicially, I paid for the piece of chicken and the shell. Cheeseburger was decent. Can't go wrong with that one. Small chocolate dipped cone was half the usual size you would normally get. Maybe it's just a bad day in which they were running out of supplies or the staff just didn't know how to make items that are consistent with other locations. I ordered take out so I didn't get a good look of my food and didn't say anything about the chocolate dipped cone. The staff were making them really small for other customers so I figured to not bother asking them to fix it. I will go to a different location next time.

Service was fine. You order and wait for your food. Ambiance is like any other fast food restaurant.

Decided to try this place because I was in the area. It was a great choice. You get two soft 4 inch corn tortillas filled with your choice of meat and toppings. They had beef or chicken. Loads of toppings to go with the meat for $3.79 after tax. Way better than other places I've tried.

Service was good. Staff was friendly and informative. Ambiance is decent. There are pictures hanging around the restaurant. Very colorful red walls, wooden seats and tables. Will go back if I'm in the area.

Decent Slice of Pizza
Submitted Thursday, May 14, 2009 - 11:04pm [Dine in]

As a student, I used to frequent this place when it first opened. However, in my last visit years ago, they charged me full price for a slice of pizza that was half of the usual size. I didn't say anything cuz I was shocked and figured I would never go back again.

I gave them another chance though so that I can compare to it to Uncle Fatih's once again. They dough is more chewy than Uncle Fatih's. Slice of pizza isn't warmed up so it's the same for both places. Less toppings though so that's why I gave it two stars. Lots of varieties to choose from. Service was simple. Pick the slice that you want. Decent pizza if you don't want to cross the street for Uncle Fatih's super loaded with toppings pizzas.

Submitted Tuesday, May 12, 2009 - 11:05pm [Dine in]

Been visiting this place since I went to UBC. It's one of the better places for pizza slices. It's nothing like an authentic pizza restaurant, but it's more than enough for the price you pay for a slice. I still stop by once in a while when I'm in the area.

So many choices to choose from. I like the potatoe one and the vegi ones the best. Loads of toppins compared to Freshslice Pizza. Portion size does seem like it has gotten smaller, and prices has gone up over time. Still the amount of toppings is what brings me back compared to the other pizza places near by.

Ambiance isn't good. Usually no place to eat inside as seats are limited. Sometimes it's dirty too. End up having to eat and walk at the same time with my pizza slices. Lots of immigrants working there.

Service is okay. They just give you what you want. Helps to point to the pizza slice that you want though. They upsell pop and slice combo occassionally.

Submitted Saturday, May 9, 2009 - 3:57pm [Dine in]

My sister suggested that I give this place a try as it has great value and good portions. As this is my first time trying this type of food, I was impressed. We ordered their daily specials and an order of chicken skewers. The skewers was a popular item as we saw two other tables with the same item. It came with a peanut sauce. The sauce had a lot of oil floating on top, but nonetheless, it was flavourful and went really well with the chicken. My friend liked the sauce so much that he kept tasting the sauce as we waiting for our other orders to arrive.

For the daily special, we ordered the chicken curry with rice and the beef curry with rice. The specials came with a can of pop. Great value for just under $7. The chicken curry was pretty decent. It tasted mild, but wasn't spicy enough for me. I found the beef curry to be better and there was more meat in the beef curry for some reason.

Service was slow. The server was taking forever. He was busy listening to music in between visiting tables. He filled our waters promptly when we arrived and gave us the menu, but then he was gone for a long while before coming back to take our orders. I then watch him make mutiple trips cleaning and setting up a table for a family who had just entered the restaurant. First it was removing the dirty dishes, Then he went to get a towel to wipe down the table. Then he went to get the cups and then went again to get the water. Lastly, he went back to give them the menus. He just didn't know how to consolidate everything. I then watched him walk past this customer, who had seated himself and had arrived before the family in the restaurant. It took another 5 mins to serve that customer. The manager/cook gave better service. He checked up on all the tables and asked if everything was okay. He also talked a bit more about the food and did a great job building rapport with the customers.

Value of food is great. Ambiance is okay. Very basic looking restaurant with posters on the wall. Nothing fancy or notable, It does look like a cafeteria as mentioned previously. I will go back to try their other items.

Great Fish!!
Submitted Friday, May 8, 2009 - 4:49pm [Dine in]

My last couple of visits here have been a really good experience. Overall, the food is reasonable priced especially for their all you can eat special.

Food is tasty! I have tried different items over the years. Onion rings are amazing. One of the better places I have tried. Seafood chowder is good. However, it does not always get served hot. It was lukewarm the last time I ordered it. Best bet is the fish and chips! Can't go wrong. Freshness varies, but still a great value!! The size of the fish does vary, but it doesn't matter when you are having the all you can eat special. Quite often I get old fries that have been sitting around for a while when the restaurant isn't busy.

Service is great. Servers are quick to help and give suggestions. Ambiance is okay. The place is a bit old fashion in my opinion, but it's the food that counts!

What happened to the veggies?
Submitted Saturday, May 2, 2009 - 6:23pm [Dine in]

I go to this location quite often for the chicken shawarma. It is by far one of the best. Really juicy chicken with the sauces and veggies taste amazing. Haven't tried the lamb as chicken seems to be the most popular. They don't carry beef though, which is too bad. It's crossed off on their sign with one long piece of tape.

There is always a line up and there's not space for dine in. You order, pay, get food and leave. Very crowded. They take a number of orders and it becomes an assembly line. I noticed that they aren't consistent with the veggies. I ordered a chicken shawarma with grilled veggies, but there was barely any of the veggies for the extra money I paid. However, they are really good the chicken portion. On other occassions, they weren't putting much lettuce or tomatoes. But for those willing to ask for more, they are willing to add the extra requested veggies (e.g. more lettuce plz).

I was introduced to this place by a friend. I ordered the two bento boxes they had available. Box A ($5) had 3pc California roll, chicken teriyaki, tempura (2 prawn, 3 veggie), green salad and miso soup. Box B ($6.25) had sashimi (3 tuni, 2 salmon), chicken teriyaki, tempura (2 prawn, 3 veggie), green salad and miso soup. A really good value when u compared to similar boxes elsewhere. The portion was great for the price. The veggie tempura and sashimi were a bit on the small side, but what do u expect for the price? It's not close to what you get for a size portion at Sushi Garden, but the price off their menu is cheap. 9 pc of salmon sahimi is $5.75.

Service was good. When I got there, the frying oil was still warming up and the cashier offered me tea. It's a basic looking restaurant. Not really inviting for dine in, but there was a group of 4 other people coming in to order food right after me so traffic was steady. Good place to eat some cheap sushi!

I came here with a couple friends. Since we were in the area, we decided to go there. This is my first visit to this restaurant.

Food was average. Lots to choose from but I decided to try the chicken taco just to compared it to others that I have eaten elsewhere. It was served with refried beans, two slices of oranges to keep my taco upright and rice. I have had better elsewhere, but it was decent. Very yummy nacho chips and salsa that was provided when we were seated.

Service was good. The server checked up on us regularly. Price is slightly higher when compared to other Mexican restaurants. Ambiance is warm.

Cheap Sushi with Okay Service
Submitted Friday, March 27, 2009 - 4:20pm [Dine in]

The food here is pretty decent. As mentioned previously, it's korean style so the rolls are a bit different from the standard sushi restaurant you get elsewhere. The food is really fresh. We ordered a platter, salmon sashimi and some rolls. The portions are above average.

I've been to this restaurant for a couple times now. During dinner, it's best to show up earlier as sometimes there are line ups. So remember to put your name and number of people eating on the clipboard provided at the front of the restaurant. This way, you know when you will get your table when it's your turn on the list. The food took a long time to get to our table as the restaurant was full so be prepared to wait even though there are lots of people working behind the counter making the orders.

This visit is by far better than my last experince here. I decided to give this place another try because my friend wanted to eat here. In my last visit to this restaurant, the tea was never filled and the plates were greasy. As in the plates that the food was served on was greasy. It made eating my food unpleasant because I wondered how they were cleaning everything. This time, everything was clean and presentable. Much better than my last visit.

It's a great value for the amount of food you get. Ambiance is loud. The place looks like the standard sushi restaurant and what you would expect a sushi restaurant to look like when it's packed.

Overall, the sushi is good and fresh, but the service really needs improvement. Be prepared to wait a long time for your food to come.

Great All You Can Eat Experience
Submitted Thursday, February 12, 2009 - 1:11pm [Dine in]

This restaurant is located in an area where there are other similar restaurants. This is by far one of the best in the area that I've tried. It is a smaller restaurant, but it's always clean! I've been to another hot pot restaurant in the area and it wasn't as presentable the night I was there.

Anyways, the food was fresh. The restaurant has a really good selection of food to pick from. Lots of meats and vegetables available that can be selected on an order sheet. I think the order sheet comes in either English or Chinese which is great for those of you who are frustrated when an English menu isn't available and you do not have someone who can read Chinese or translate for you. You can pay extra for a different broth as well.

The service was really good. We had a 6:15pm reservation for 6 people, but a few of my friends weren't able to make it for that time. The restaurant was very nice to change the reservation for 7:15pm instead. The place already had a line up, and they still managed to hold a table for us when we all got there! This was a Wednesday night so we might not be as lucky if it were later in the week. Tea was refilled regularly and the food came fairly quickly.

The price is about $18 per person. Awesome value for the selection of food. Ambiance is a bit on the loud side. When it's a small restaurant and all the tables were seated, you can only imagine how much noise you would hear and how hard it would be to carry a conversation without raising your voice so that your friend across the table can hear you. However, I will go back for sure as it's great food and great value!!

Okay Drinks, Poor Service
Submitted Thursday, February 12, 2009 - 1:44am [Dine in]

I was part of a group of four. We had just finished eating hot pot at a near by restaurant when two of us decided we wanted to have some bubble tea for dessert. We decided to try this one as there were many to choose from in the area.

The price is a bit high for standard bubble tea. It was just a bit over $11 for one aloe honey green tea with no pearls and one coconut milk tea with pearls. The price was comparable to the tea houses in the area. We ordered it for take out.

The taste was okay. I have had better honey flavored drinks. The aloe honey green tea tasted a bit bitter, but I'm not sure if that is what it's suppose to taste like. I'm not sure if the fruit bubble teas would have tasted better. My friend thought her coconut drink was pretty good.

Ambience was nice. The place was about half full. It was dimly lit. A good place to carry a conversation.

Service was bad. For a restaurant that was half full, we were not allowed to sit in the resturant to wait for our ride. The server who made our drinks would not let us sit in the restaurant. There was a one order for one person rule in order for us to sit and wait. It was either let two of my friends stand outside by themselves or we all had to leave. I would understand this policy if the place was packed, but the place wasn't full.

I would choose to go to Bubble World, Jumbo Cup or any random tea house in Crystal Mall instead. For starters, the drinks are cheaper and I haven't been kicked out yet.
