I've had better
Submitted Monday, May 1, 2006 - 11:20pm [Dine in]

Food: Went there on a Thursday and appies were on special for half off so we decided to try a few of those. The Brooklyn Platter which had a bit of everything was average and calamari was also average - nothing special. I ordered the chicken burger which turned out to be one of the worst chicken burgers I have ever eaten - very oily and the fries that came with it were soggy. My stomach did not feel very well for the following 2 days after I ate here.

Service: Server kept forgetting to give me the menu and iced tea. She was, however, very patient with the majority of loud and obnoxious drunk patrons = kudos to her! If it hadn't been for her patience and amazing demeanor in handling the drunks, I would have tried to find a way to give 0 stars for service since food also took its sweet time to get to our table.

Ambiance: This place gives off an aura of dirty and dingy - very dark and our seats were quite dirty (i.e. old crumbs of food) and I had to wipe mine down a few times before sitting down. The patio is nice in that it has seats and tables but again, very dirty and dingy looking. Not a great view as you get to see the Fraser River up close and it ain't clean lookin'!. A majority of patrons were also quite loud, unruly, etc - not a place to take a date but a good place to hang out with low-key drinking buddies since they have jugs of Canadian on Thurs for $12 but only if they don't mind a shady atmosphere.

I will miss this place...

Recently, there was a shooting here where several customers tried to overpower a man who tried to rob this restaurant. One customer died and several others are in hospital. I sincerely hope those who were injured will be okay and my sympathies go out to the family members of the patron who lost his/her life in this senseless tragedy.

Food: amazing honey garlic spareribs and the best hot and sour soup I've ever had. All of their dishes have actually been nothing short of awesome. I've honestly driven all the way from Delta to eat here on many occasions.

Service: being regular customers, we've always received awesome service. It can be slow during busy times but it's to be expected from a small/family-run establishment.

Ambiance: nice hole in the wall for cheap eats so don't expect a five-star/gold-plated restaurant.

I feel terribly sad about the recent event at this wonderful restaurant and would absolutely return if they decided to re-open. Again, my deepest sympathies for all those involved in this tragedy. RIP.

Look up for bloody sakes!
Submitted Wednesday, April 26, 2006 - 2:12am [Dine in]

Food: Not bad. Really liked that roti type dish that you dip into satay sauce. I had the crazy spicy noodles that weren't all that crazy but kinda spicy so it was alright. The only thing that bothered me was that every other bite, I would bite into something that was crunchy, kind of like eggshells... Never did really figure out what it was but could have been the stems to one of the spices but not quite sure.

Service: Servers were not mean but they were def. horrible at their job. The counter in there is too high with too much stuff on it so most of the time, they can't even see you if you're trying to wave them down. Took us a good 5 min to get their attention to order and a good 10 min to get more tea.

Ambiance: I dunno what the decor is supposed to denote. Is it aiming for Malaysian? Tropical? Chic? I dunno. The seats and tables were nice and comfy and the place was quite clean. I really liked the big palm tree in there since it reminded me of Vegas.

Overall: Maybe I'll go back but there's just so many other places I could go for a meal in Richmond. So maybe sometime in the future, I might go back to try some of the other dishes people have been saying that were good.

Empty on a Friday night?!?? Shady....
Submitted Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 5:20am [Dine in]

Went there on a Friday night after stumbling across it on the internet and it was located almost at the end of Hamilton Street. When we arrived, the place seemed ok since there was a large party sitting at the entrance so we naturally assumed it was busy. However, when we entered into the dining area, it was completely empty (only 1 other table with a couple who only ordered drinks and were actually waiting for a table at a different restaurant). The large group in the entrance was just the waitress' friends... We were duped. So we ordered appies and made an escape to another more happening place...

Food: Spring rolls were atrocious but zucchini sticks were ok but quite greasy. Sauces came from 4 L jugs since I could see the cook prepare everything... Somehow unsettling.

Service: Server was a sweetie which made it difficult to leave without ordering something.

Ambiance: I guess it would be good to have a drink here if you're waiting for another restaurant or just wanna watch the game. It was empty on a Friday night which made us quite uncomfortable. Restaurant itself is quite plain and the music they were playing was just everywhere - pick a theme! This is a place that is in serious need of a makeover if they want to survive in the industry, esp. when the only patrons they seem to attract are their own employees' friends and people waiting for tables at other restaurants.

Meat meat and more meat
Submitted Sunday, April 23, 2006 - 5:04am [Dine in]

Food: A lot of meat - wow. Ordered the Elvis platter and had plenty to take home but I didn't think the food was particularly great tasting. The majority of the food came cold which I didn't expect from a BBQ house. Sausage, ribs and pulled pork were great. Hen was actually quite bland - needed a lot of BBQ sauce. Coleslaw and potato salad were a hit but fries were limp and the beans were ok. I think a lot of people equate portion size as being a the main factor of their rating but I think taste is also very important and if it wasn't for the BBQ sauce in the bottle/bowl, this meat would fall flat.

Service: Almost non-existent. Def. no need to tip.

Ambiance: Almost cafeteria-like and the music can get too loud for conversation. Def. just a place to go with pals.

Nothing special...
Submitted Wednesday, April 19, 2006 - 1:25am [Dine in]

Food: The taste was generally ok-good. I had the peppercorn steak which was good and my bf had some type of chicken/scallop/shrimp dish with rice pilaf which he thought was good. The only problem was that the portions were too small and they really need to serve something other than corn on the side. It's only good for those who eat very light. Nothing outstanding, just run of the mill food.

Service: Nice servers but really don't know what they're doing. Asked us if we wanted fresh ground pepper but then forgot to bring the pepper grinder... lol. oh man....

Ambiance: Just your typical bar trying to be better than a bar but not quite succeeding. Very plain and I wouldn't recommend bringing a date.

Overall: Probably won't be coming back. There's plenty of other places that offer a much better meal at that price and a much better dining experience.

New favorite Indian restaurant!
Submitted Friday, April 7, 2006 - 10:05pm [Dine in]

Food: incredible for the price. It's no wonder that it was packed. Large enough portions. Ordered their variety type platter and chicken biryani - just so delicious! The most perfect naans I've ever seen had - no grease and nice and crispy on the outside but moist and fluffy on the inside - I've never had anything like it before. Samosas are really good too. The food is spicy so be careful!!

Service: Quite attentive. Never once had to ask for water. They seemed a little unorganized though as the owner and two other waitresses kept asking up for our drink orders. Other than that, they were completely wonderful! When they misunderstood our order, they fixed it right away with no questions asked!

Ambiance: lovely restaurant with a really neat waterfall bar. Dark enough to add ambiance but with enough light to eat. Def a place you could bring a date.

Hello Mr. Pretentious!
Submitted Thursday, March 30, 2006 - 5:06pm [Dine in]

Food: Excellent lobster. I had no qualms with the entrees but what's with all the poshy small amuse-bouche-type dishes? I got some fruit type slushy thing in a chinese soup spoon and the server was touting its amazing texture, taste, etc but all I could think was "slushy". Don't get me wrong, all these little appy things were tasty but I don't need you to tell me all the ingredients as I'm eating it. I guess that's more of a service thing.

Service: Which brings us here... So pretentious I could hardly breathe!! A waiter was standing over us the entire time, so close that we were uncomfortable with having a conversation and were relegated to throwing looks at each other and laughing because it was so unbelievably poshy and uncomfortable! And he kept re-filling our waters everytime we took a sip!! I know that we were one of only two tables seated but no need for suffocation people! My boyfriend accidently moved one of his forks and the waiter kept re-arranging them back into the same order!! What the heck was that all about?? Jesus... I guess he was trying to make it pretty clear that we didn't "belong" there. Lastly, don't explain what every dish is made out of and how its prepared and blah blah blah. Some people just want to eat their food... I understand that some people would want to know but it just made the experience so much more unenjoyable when we couldn't hold our own conversation.

Ambiance: Great view... just wished it wasn't foggy so we could have seen it... :( Lovely decor.

Overall: If it hadn't been for the food itself, I would have given this place maybe 1 or 2 stars. Never coming back. Why? Cuz I can still feel the steely gaze of our waiter on my back.

Heavy but a good heavy...
Submitted Thursday, March 30, 2006 - 4:55pm [Dine in]

Food: for some reason, i just love the idea of tandoori chicken caesar salad and it actually tasted pretty good. samosas are excellent (but then again, i never met a samosa i didn't like) and butter chicken is awesome (again, never met butter chicken i didn't like). Nothing was too greasy, so just the way I like it. Never have room for dessert tho. Oh well! At least the food is good!

Service: We went late at night so it was a little slow. And I don't like how servers tend to hang around and watch their customers - gives me an uneasy feeling. When I went during the daytime when there were more people, the service was much better. Odd.

Ambiance: Nice and warm. Like the colours... and the bathrooms are nice and clean. Bathroom cleanliness should always be evaluated in ambiance cuz an icky bathroom = icky ambiance.

All in all, would come here again. Check the local newspapers for coupons to this place too to save yourself some moola!

Maybe just as bad as the other japanese place attached to the mall
Submitted Monday, March 27, 2006 - 2:03pm [Dine in]

Food: If I could, I would've given this place no stars. Enough said. The sushi chef needs to go back to school and get an accounting degree or something cuz his/her rolls were terrible - mushy, fell apart, bad ingredients and the list goes on....

Service: What's with having to beg and scream for some tea? Especially when there's no one in the restaurant and you should then be receiving some impeccable service!! Orders were forgotten or taking forever to arrive.

Ambiance: Blah. Nothing special.

One of the worst places for all-you-can-eat
Submitted Monday, March 27, 2006 - 1:59pm [Dine in]

Food: Three words - dry, bland or mushy - take your pick.

Service: We waited over 40 min for our gyoza order. It's like they had to go out, find a pig, kill it, slice off some meat, grind it down, add seasoning and veggies, grind down some wheat, make flour, make the gyoza casing, wrap the meat, fry it and then bring it to our table - except that it didn't taste all that fresh and looked like it'd been sitting out on a counter for a good 30 min under some sort of lamp.... Orders were missing and needed to stand and shout to get some bloody tea.

Ambiance: Like any other sub par chinese-owned japanese restaurant. Not that I have anything against chinese-owned japanese restaurants since there are many of them and most of them are pretty good, except this one was sub sub par. :(

Yummy food v. Mediocre service
Submitted Sunday, March 26, 2006 - 8:51pm [Dine in]

Food: Very yummy. I ordered some type of chicken dish and it was very flavorful and large that I had enough for lunch the following day! My bf's steak was the envy of the table as everyone else ordered pasta. It was again very big and came cooked just right. No room for dessert. :(

Service: *sigh* When I book the private dining area and you say its ok, I expect to have the private dining area when I arrive. They double-booked the room upstairs so we (it was a friend's birthday) ended up having to sit downstairs with a series of tables (round and square) shoved together into a row - you can't have a conversation with anyone this way! Server constantly forgetting drinks. Food orders were taking 40 min to an hour for some people but coming quickly for others. Bills were mixed up in the end. Would have given it only 1 star for service if the server hadn't been so apologetic and gave the birthday boys glasses as a gift.

Ambiance: Very nice and dark. A good place to take a date I think. Felt very cramped tho.

Two seconds from licking the grill....
Submitted Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - 4:05am [Dine in]

Food: just amazing. And the fact that you get to see it cooked right in front of you just makes the experience so much better and appreciative of the skills of the chef. Everything came out perfectly. The steak was cooked to a perfect medium like we asked, my chicken was so good my bf couldn't stop eating it (hey!! grrr... jk!), the lobster and shrimp were cooked so yummy I was seriously considering ordering more even though I was already full.

Service: very attentive - chefs and waitresses. Even though it was busy, we were always asked if we were doing ok. Lovely people. Chef was funny - pulling pranks and doing little tricks. If you go, try to get the older chefs - they do some crazy knife work like tossing super sharp knives in the air!!

Ambiance: its nice and cosy and its like watching a live cooking show! too neat...

Will definately return. Bring your entertainment card and save yourself some moola too!!

Where's my miso soup??
Submitted Saturday, February 25, 2006 - 2:52am [Dine in]

Food: There was an extensive all you can eat menu but we were in a hurry so ordered a la carte. I liked how the tempura had a lot of crunchy batter and wasn't at all soggy. Chicken teriyaki was good but you can't mess that up. The california rolls were kinda mushy but were still ok. Sushi was good (wasn't frozen like a lot of other "japanese" places).

Service: Food came very promptly and we were given drinks right away. However, they forgot my miso soup and ebi sunomono and we had to ask for it in the end. We got an extra miso soup out of it but never received my ebi sunomono. They are also so concerned with clearing plates quickly that they'll start doing the whole clean up bit while you're still sitting there. A waiter dropped some plates on some customers behind me cuz he tried to grab too many at once... :(

Ambiance: Very typical. Nothing special.

May go back if I'm in the neighbourhood and need a quick bite for cheap. My bf and I were able to get full off of $24 after tax! Of course the all you can eat is much more expensive (20 or 23 per person depending on what all you can eat menu you choose) but no need for it when you can get full from just the a la carte menu which can end up being much cheaper.

Cushiony
Submitted Wednesday, February 15, 2006 - 9:56pm [Dine in]

Food: it seemed like an interesting spin on greek food. very tasty although some of it was a lil too greasy. ordered their kebab delight - a lot of meat but it was all very tender and tasty. those pakawra are so yummy and addictive!!

Service: awesome! they made sure to check on everyone every so often and were always attentive and friendly. the only thing that bothered me was that we wanted out leftovers to go but the waiter never came with it.

Ambiance: must try the cushion rooms - very comfy but only if you don't wear a skirt which some poor girl beside me was and looked a lil uncomfortable. it's one of those dining experiences you have to try because it's just so different from everything else you've ever done.

I just don't get this concept...
Submitted Saturday, February 11, 2006 - 2:09am [Dine in]

Food: OK, so you have to go get your own ingredients, pick out your own sauce and all they do is pan fry it for you? What the heck are we paying so much for? I've been here a few times and I've tried a few combinations of sauces but they all end up tasting like teriyaki in the end. I even opted to have the veggie because it would be much cheaper but my plate still ended up being $15 and it was not a large portion. I think food wise, this place is the biggest scam.

Service: Had to find waiters to help us all the time. Where'd they all go?

Ambiance: Just like any other restaurant. Nothing special, nothing distinct. Some people would find it neat to be able to pick your own ingredients and sauce but if I wanted to do that, I wouldve just cooked at home rather than go out to eat.

Love that coconutty flavour sauce...
Submitted Monday, February 6, 2006 - 2:20am [Dine in]

Food: had a non-meat eater with us so had to order dishes with only seafood but it turned out pretty good. Had some type of red curry with shrimp and some mussels that were really good. I've also had their chicken with cashews and its excellent. I think their pad thai either with chicken or shrimp is yummy.

Service: hit them on a good night because sometimes it can bad service. Never had to ask for water or anything like that. Good service even though we used an entertainment coupon. :P Only thing that bothered me was that the waiter kept spilling water on our table.

Ambiance: cheesy like the rest of the locations but nice and bright. This one isn't as bad as the burnaby location since it doesn't have that weird fake parrot that burnaby has.

It didn't revolve the whole time we were there!
Submitted Monday, February 6, 2006 - 1:19am [Dine in]

Food: not bad. the scallops were tender, the lobster was good. no complaints but nothing really special or memorable either.

Service: alright service. had to ask for water a few times but that was it. the waiters seemed very disorganized. bumping into each other and such.

Ambiance: a really nice place to take a date. the view of course is amazing but i thought this was supposed to be a revolving restaurant or am i wrong? we were there for 2 hours and we saw the exact same skyscraper the entire time. what's up with that? would have given ambiance 5 stars if it had revolved. maybe they had some technical problems.

I can't eat in the dark!
Submitted Thursday, February 2, 2006 - 3:54am [Dine in]

Food: Very mediocre. Bland steak, dry chicken, wilted salad and bland ravioli that actually gave my bf an upset stomach afterwards. Food was so disappointing and unappetizing that no one ate the tiramisu that came afterwards - not an exaggeration! No one literally touched it and when the evening ended, there were plates and plates of untouched tiramisu left on the table.

Service: No service. Long wait for food and couldn't find anyone for help at any time.

Ambiance: Good place for older crowd (+35) to dance during and after dinner. Frederico sings!! The live band was impressive. However, since we were 23, it was just embarassing watching people wiggle around and it wasn't our type of music (oldies and pop songs from 90s and early 2000). But definately good for those who are older and like to dance. The lights were turned really low for the entertainment so we weren't able to eat afterwards since we couldn't see our food. Aren't we supposed to eat and dance at the same time? How can we eat if we can't see anything but the dance floor? Some questions Frederico should ponder on.

Note: It was a large group (company dinner) but just because you come in a large group (with reservations!) doesn't mean you should have to suffer through mediocre food and service considering the prices. I mean, they had sufficient notice beforehand so they should have had more staff on hand. We are still paying customers in the end.

Ever feel like u just wanna explode from all the grease?
Submitted Sunday, January 29, 2006 - 1:51am [Dine in]

Food: I've had much better food for just a few bucks more. The ribs actually gave my bf an upset stomach. The wings still had hair/leftover wing on them... gross. The gyoza came cold. The tempura was really greasy. Come to think of it, my stomach was not feeling well for the rest of the night either. If only I could give no stars for food.

Service: We had to repeatedly ask for tea and water. And waiters should really not berate other waiters in front of customers - it's mean and made our experience just a little more depressing.

Ambiance: Just a stereotypical restaurant with nothing special to it. Better to just go to Daimasu - it's not all you can eat but you'll end up spending less for more food. Trust me as I found this out a week later eating Daimasu's late night menu.
