AMAZING food... there are ordering secrets!
Submitted Monday, January 21, 2008 - 9:56am [Dine in]

When you first go in this place it will seem standard Chinatown restaurant - not much in the way of atmosphere or decor, etc. The food deals are incredible, though -- besides the full menu, there are 3 full pages of specials -- there's so much to read, you won't know what to order.
But here's the trick: the best dishes, as one of the previous reviewers said, are off-menu.
I recommend the steamed sea bass in ginger and green onion sauce -- this keeps me going back to Gain Wah. Also the braised tofu hotpot is delicious.
It's worth going back just to keep trying all the dishes.

Phoned on a Friday afternoon to make a reservation for that evening - after some 'thinking' (obviously I'd left it a bit late) they said they could get us a table at 6:30 but they had a party booked at it for 8:30. No problem - it was my bad for not realizing they'd book up pretty fast for a Friday night.
From the minute we walked in the door they were SUPER nice to us. Seated us right away, had menus and water to us promptly; did everything at the right time - drink orders, food order; etc. Waiter was knowledgeable about the menu if we had questions.
My friends didn't know abuot the 8:30 'arrangement' so they commented later that they felt a bit rushed at first - personally I love prompt service, so I was delighted!
Food was EXCELLENT. When my risotto arrived my first thought was that the portion was small, but they knew what they were doing - it was perfect; added to that, probably the best risotto I've ever had.
The strange thing was that near dessert, our sevice got much slower. I was a little concerned about having to 'clear out' at 8:30 but figured if they wanted us out, they could make the service snappier! Well, there must have been some cancellations, because we were not hurried at all, and enjoyed a wonderful dessert, and coffees.

(Reading the prior review, I'd have to say that if they want you out at a certain time, then make it clear to them that this is contingent on THEIR service, not your speed of eating!)

Anyway, for us it was a wonderful night. Everyone's food was great; if our waiter had disappeared when we needed him one of the other staff would promptly find him; we were treateded with friendliness and courteousness throughout. Atmosphere was great, too.

And then, even though we left clearly happy with our experience there, they even phoned me the next day to check how it was! Now THAT's service. I'll go back here anytime.

GREAT little find in Kits!

I went here after reading the reviews, so I was expecting good food and 'iffy' service.
Well, let me say, the food was OUTSTANDING. (caveat: I didn't actually eat sushi, so I can't comment on that yet; I had a lunchbox). But if the lunchbox is anything to go by, I look forward to going back for sushi. All the food was so FRESH, so perfectly cooked, and the Ohitashi was the best I've ever had. Even things like vegie tempura, which are usually so standard from restaurant to restaurant, were oustanding - it included mushroom and green bean, both cooked to perfection. The barbecued Saba (mackerel) was mouthwatering.
The service was fine! We were on the patio, so were a little slower to get 'noticed' (I had to pop inside to let them know we were there), but we weren't in a hurry, so it didn't matter. The patio is tiny, but beautiful, with a perfect view to the beach - I'd be happy to go back here ANY time.
