A nice, familiar place to go for pretty good food
Submitted Sunday, September 16, 2007 - 3:28pm [Dine in]

If we want a comfortable place to eat, family-style, we come here. Salavatore can be found cheerfully greeting everyone at the door, charming the kids and flirting gently with the ladies. Once inside, you are surrounded by noisy tables of familes, enjoying honest pasta. It's not Michelin star stuff but the food is tasty enough, the prices are truly excellent and the service is mostly attentive. The shellfish and linguine for 2, served in a skillet, has been consistently good. My 11 year old daughter loves the meatballs and spaghetti and always orders it. Parking can be a bit difficult.

Nice ambiance; mostly good food; often overpriced
Submitted Sunday, September 16, 2007 - 3:16pm [Dine in]

We like the Washington Avenue Grill. We have eaten there a number of times and my husband has had his office Christmas party there 2 or 3 times now. At their best, the food is wonderful, fresh, flavourful. At their worst, it can be inconsistent at times and the menu is starting to get a bit boring. Need more imaginative fare. Hate the incorrect spelling/typos of French words (beurre, not "buerre" for butter). It's all about attention to detail. The service is quite good, however, and the general manager seems to know how to run a place properly. Nice decor inside; don't be put off by the shabby entrance.

Doesn't live up to hype
Submitted Sunday, September 16, 2007 - 3:10pm [Dine in]

I have eaten there 3 times. When it first opened, it was much better: they seemed eager to distinguish themselves. The food was fresh and flavourful and the service was classy. Since then, the service has gotten more and more laughably snobbish (really, who are they trying to impress???!) and the food is hit and miss. What a shame, such potential. I will not eat there again.

Tawara Sushi15153 Highway 10, #103, Surrey
Amateurish service made me stop coming
Submitted Sunday, September 16, 2007 - 3:01pm [Dine in]

I am a sushi aficionado -- I eat at a sushi restaurant at least once a week, often more. My family and I discovered Tawara a couple of years ago and started to go there every Friday night. The food was very fresh and well-prepared (prices were average to a little on the high side) and the chef/owner was very cheerful, always greeting us with a friendly wave from the kitchen in the back. His little girl often sat on a bar stool, colouring or playing with dolls. Very endearing; a welcoming place. The wife/co-owner/server/cashier was ok, seemed a little obsessed with never letting anyone have anything for free: no substitutions, no freebies when we waited a long time (hubby often sent us stuff). But what made us finally give up on them was the continually poor service. I don't mean nasty, I mean so amateurish that wait staff would walk past us when we practically had our hands up. Drinks didn't get refilled; dirty dishes didn't get picked up; orders were often messed up, etc. They just seemed to be meandering around the restaurant, doing things really inefficiently. These were nice enough young girls who appeared completely untrained in the art of waiting tables. If they had a large take-out order or orders to fill, customers at tables got forgotten for long periods of time. We finally stopped going and have found another sushi place in Surrey where the food is good and the service is personable and efficient. Maybe we'll go back again one day to see if they have improved. Probably not, because they are probably still packed on a regular basis. People are forgiving. We tip really well but demand good service. Pretty good food is not enough for us.

How come people still come here?
Submitted Sunday, September 9, 2007 - 7:30pm [Dine in]

I have heard nothing but bad reviews from people I know who have eaten here. My experience was abysmal, right from the indifferent service to the bland, mass-produced food. Anyone who likes Anducci's food just hasn't had real Italian food.

Good food; good-value lunch buffet; expensive dinner menu.
Submitted Sunday, September 2, 2007 - 12:56am [Dine in]

I don't know how this place stays afloat, really! It's a large restaurant and every time I come in, it's practically deserted. Their lunch all-you-can-eat buffet is pretty decent, with spinach and meat, lentils, beans, butter chicken, naan, etc. The food on their dinner menu, although very flavourful, is alarmingly expensive for the tiny portion you get and you pay through the nose for each a la carte item, such as $1 per naan (which are part of the buffet at lunch) and overpriced yogurt. Service is good, but then there are always very few people to serve, so the waiter is hardly run off his feet.

Very friendly service; fresh noodles, bland sauces
Submitted Sunday, September 2, 2007 - 12:45am [Dine in]

It's great that they make their noodles from scratch -- they were quite good. Pity the sauces themselves were really ordinary. The quantities are obscene -- nobody can eat that much. I suggest smaller portions and put your money into improving the taste. Servers are excellent.

Plentiful but rather ordinary food
Submitted Sunday, September 2, 2007 - 12:43am [Dine in]

The good: Their Italian sausage and potato soup is really rather tasty. Also, I like that their soup and salad is "bottomless".

The bad: The wait is always too long.

The ugly: Really mediocre Italian food. Why would you come here when you could get delicious, home-cooked-by-mamma Italian food at many other places? I guess their advertising and their big name is a draw. I only go there when I'm nearby, having shopped-til-I-dropped and wanted a meal without expending too much effort.

Unexciting food; indifferent service; unhygenic kitchen
Submitted Sunday, September 2, 2007 - 12:36am [Dine in]

This place, in Surrey, would have too much competition to do well. The food is nothing special, if you know how good Indian food can really be. The service when I was there (a while back) was indifferent at best. If you read the restaurant closure guide issued by the Fraser Health Authority, you will notice that these people have been cited for unhygenic kitchen conditions. Not very appetizing.

Mama Mia Gelato7130 120th St, Surrey
Delish ice-cream, made in filthy conditions
Submitted Sunday, September 2, 2007 - 12:24am [Dine in]

I've always enjoyed their Italian-style gelato, Indian-style kulfi ice cream and Indian hot snacks. Then, one day, my child needed to use the washroom and they led me to the back. Well: it was disgusting! Open food containers, with spoons in; food and garbage spilling over; uneven concrete floor with holes which were filled with stagnant water (the toilet overflowed?); food and toilet cleaning materials lumped in together; greasy, dirty surfaces. They probably have vermin. This put me right off and I've never been back. I won't even eat their ice-cream which is served at "The Green Lettuce" restaurant on Scott Road at 64th.

Food good; restaurant dirty; washrooms disgusting!!
Submitted Sunday, September 2, 2007 - 12:17am [Dine in]

Have been here 3 or 4 times. The all-you-can-eat menu is the most varied I've ever seen and the food is actually quite good. Service is decent, although a bit slow when they're busy. The restaurant itself is quite dirty, though. The floor looks as if it has never been washed, chair backs are sticky. The washrooms are absolutely FILTHY! I was in the washroom once waiting for my daughter to come out of the stall. Our waitress came in, smiled at me, used the toilet and then emerged, only to reapply her lipstick BUT SHE NEVER WASHED HER HANDS!!! YUCK! That put me right off and I haven't been back since.

Nordel Sushi12080 Nordel Way, #125, Surrey
Much repeat business
Submitted Sunday, September 2, 2007 - 12:09am [Dine in]

We are some of the regulars at Nordel Sushi; we come once a week. Their food is consistently good, although not gourmet quality. They have fairly good value for money with their "all you can eat" menu ($20 per adult, $1 per age of the child) which, although not extremely varied, does have all the perennial favourites, such as edamamme, gomae, gyoza, tempura, salmon, tuna, ebi, assorted rolls, teriyaki and wings. Service is excellent if you get their seasoned staff who've been there a while. Otherwise, it is hit and miss with the newer servers and that can be quite frustrating. It is a family-run business (she works the lunch shift out front, he prepares the sushi) and they run their restaurant with integrity and a desire to please their clientele. A good all-round place to enjoy a family sushi dinner.

Fabulous food, inexperienced servers.
Submitted Saturday, September 1, 2007 - 11:41pm [Dine in]

The Italian-speaking,Indian chef knows what he's doing: the food was excellent. The spinach salad with goat cheese and pancetta was good, though the dressing was a little too vinegary. The Minestrone soup had an intensely flavourful broth. The Mussels appetizer was superb. The spaghetti with meatballs was tasty, even though the meatballs had a strange texture. The linguine with chicken was wonderful. The clam linguine was delicious, with balanced flavours. The food came out hot, plentiful and nicely plated. The chocolate ganache (the only dessert not made in-house) was ordinary, too sweet. The creme brulee, served in pastry, was heavenly! The tiramisu was weak in texture and flavour; I've had better. The service was well-meaning but amateurish. One server (glasses) was friendly enough but completely clueless. She brought the drinks out late; never asked us about more beer; forgot the bread several times, even when reminded; walked past our table many times, leaving dirty plates; never checked in with us until we were having dessert. The other server (green eyes) was a bit better but nervous, as if this were all very new to her. She fumbled a lot, dropped cutlery. The bill was hand-written! Every item we had ordered was laboriously written out in long-hand and presented to us on a blank slip of paper! I would definitely recommend this restaurant for the excellent food and hope their service gets better as they get more experienced. I would also suggest that they make better use of their floor space by putting in tables for 2 (which they can then put together for a party of 4, as needed). The place was full the whole night; however, 2 people sat at many tables for 4.They had to turn away some people. Prices for entrees are reasonable for what you get. Prices for appetizers and dessert are average. There are also a number of irratating spelling errors and typo's on the menu, mostly the Italian and French words.
