Pinpin Restaurant6113 Fraser Street, Vancouver
Overrated
Submitted Tuesday, November 6, 2007 - 2:09pm [Dine in]

My co-worker and I heard that PinPin Restaurant was a great place to go for lunch and so we did.

We were starving so we ended up ordering more than we can eat, which would not be a problem since we could just take home the left overs. We tried palabok, laing, lumpiang shanghai, pork barbeque and cassava cake. The lumpiang shanghai was nearly burnt on the outside, but the meat inside was still raw. The palabok noodle dish didn't have any taste. The laing (taro leaves in coconut milk) was sour and it was cold in the middle. I had an upset stomach within the hour due to this spoiled dish (this I know because my co-worker did not eat this dish). The cassava tasted raw too! The only saving grace was the pork barbeque, which turned out to be half okay and half burnt.

The service was none to speak of. The ladies who were served us woud not give us water to drink and gave us the take out containers to pack the left overs on our own. We could also hear the owner/s yell at their staff.

The place is not to my liking. I think it is definitely overrated.

Disappointment
Submitted Monday, July 16, 2007 - 12:33pm [Dine in]

I dined at Rekados with 5 others and we were all disppointed from the minute we walked in. Upon arrival, one of the servers looked at us but turned around right away to serve a table. It took the same server another 5 minutes to get back to us. We said we had reservations, but he never asked for the name the reservations were for and told us we can sit anywhere. It was a week night and the place was a third full, therefore not too busy. We saw a table with a sign that said reserved and pointed it out. His boss came out and told him that the table was for us. After being seated, we waited another 5 minutes to be given menus. We ordered our drinks and again, it took about 20 minutes before all of the drinks were served.

We then proceeded to order our food: for appetizers, we had tokwa't tokwa, lumpiang shanghai, barbeque chicken and pork, and calamares; for our main dishes, we had palabok, bicol express, adobo, spinach adobo, and sizzling salpicao; and for dessert, we had turon toffee, leche flan, guinumis, sago't gulaman, cheesecake and dark chocolate combo. It took another 20 minutes before the first of the appetizers came out. By this time we had been at Rekados for almost an hour starving. All of the savouries were bland and/or spicy. We didn't mind the spicy, but not having enough flavour in the food was the concern. The iced drink/desserts were also bland. We were all so annoyed waiting for so long for food and service and to top it all, the food was not good.

I thought the food was expensive for what you're getting, not enought value for the money. This place was over rated and I don't think any of us will be returning to this restaurant.

I have been to Tapas Tree many times and this resaurant has consistently maintained great quality of their food and service. My favourites are the seared ahi tuna, beef tenderloin, seared scallops and wild mushrooms. The servers are wonderful and friendly. This place will definitely remain on my list of favourites.

Beyond Restaurant & Lounge1015 Burrard St., Vancouver
Great addition to Century Plaza Hotel
Submitted Saturday, June 30, 2007 - 2:34pm [Dine in]

I dined at Beyond with girlfriends and we were pleased with our meal. We shared all of the foods to have a taste everything we ordered: Seared Ahi Tuna Salad, Barnston Island Field Greens, Spot Prawn Ceviche and Crispy Spring Rolls for starters; Westcoast Bouillabaisse, Mussels and Frites and the Seared Halibut for our main course; and Mini Brulees, Dark Chocolate Mousse Dome and Double Chocolate and Rocky Road Brownie. All of the foods were prepared and presented very well. The staff were friendly but, service could be improved. Our server was a little slow in getting our food and drinks to our table and yet, the restaurant was not that busy. The place is spacious and hip. I would definitely go back.

Teahouse Restaurant, The7501 Stanley Park Drive, Vancouver
Romantic
Submitted Tuesday, May 29, 2007 - 10:14pm [Dine in]

I attended a small wedding last week at Ferguson Point and the dinner reception was at the Sequoia Grill. Some of the dishes we ordered were: The Teahouse Mushrooms, Seafood Taster, Baby Spinach and Pear Salad, Ahi Tuna, Braised Short Rib, Venison, Lemon Tart, Double Belgian Chocolate Cake and Warm Chocolate Fondant Pudding. Everything was great and no food was left on any of the plates. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The place was romantic and perfect for a small wedding party.

Hapa Izakaya1479 Robson St, Vancouver
great food and place
Submitted Tuesday, May 22, 2007 - 11:34am [Dine in]

I have been to Hapa Izakaya a number of times since it opened. The food has always been good and among my favourites are the torched mackerel, the tuna belly on garlic toast, the ebi mayo and the chicken karaage. The place is comfortable yet sleek and sexy. The service, though, could use a bit of improvement, but not bad.

Baru Latino Restaurante2535 Alma Street, Vancouver
Outstanding
Submitted Saturday, May 12, 2007 - 2:45pm [Dine in]

The food at Baru is outstanding: we ordered The Platanitos, The Baru Ceviche, The Chipotle Mussels and Seared Scallops for appetizers and The Tuna Caribe, Guava Glazed Pork and Paella for dinner. All six of us tasted and shared all of the dishes and liked every single one. For dessert, we all ordered the same one and each had our own: The Morrocho. It was creative and taste was to die for.

Service was amazing: servers were happy, helpful, knowledgeable, attentive and pleasant. All wonderful qualities that these servers have that made our dining experience an amazing one.

The restaurant is a fun and vibrant. Great set up and place to be for Latin food.

Always consistent
Submitted Thursday, April 12, 2007 - 12:34pm [Dine in]

I have been to Vij's a number of times and it is wonderful that the food and service have been consistently outstanding, if not incredible, ever since this restaurant opened. I had out-of-town guests two weeks ago and brought them to Vij's and they all raved about the food; the lamb popsicle sticks, prawns in coconut and grilled sable fish were all so flavourful. Fingerfoods were also offered with our drinks while we waited for the dishes that we ordered at our ttable. The service staff were great; three came to our table throughout our meal to make sure we had everything we ordered. The place is simply decorated, but elegant. I will definitely keep coming back!
