Good Indian in West Van
Submitted Friday, January 22, 2016 - 2:26pm [Dine in]

If you are in the mood for upscale Indian food, this is the place to come. From the moment you step in, you can tell this is not your typical Indian restaurant. No lunch buffets or specials, but rather, fine tapestry and lighting adorning the walls...ie. fine dining. With Tasty Indian Bistro around my place, I have been trained to eat my good butter chicken and naan.

There were quite a few tables empty, so we scored a seat in no time. A server came after about five minutes to give us our menus, and asked us if we had been here before. I quickly learnt why we said that, as the food was not your typical Punjabi items on the menu. Quite confusing, if you have never been to a curry house.

Calamari ($11) - decently sized and accompanied by a delicious mango chutney.

Kashmiri Rogan Josh ($17) - healthy serving, very good taste of spices, chillies a little too much though. Leftovers tasted just as good the next day.

Butter chicken ($14) - I had to try it here just to compare. Gravy was a little different from what I am used to but still good.

Keema naan ($5) - recommended by the server, stuffed with pieces of minced lamb and accompanied with a sauce. Good option, but a little bit of an overkill for me after the lamb dish.

Sushi Mart1668 Robson Street, Vancouver
All for the complimentary Miso Soup and Green Tea
Submitted Tuesday, September 15, 2015 - 11:21am [Dine in]

Best value sushi in the area.

There's a lot of sushi in Downtown and the surrounding areas, but this one is probably the one of best value I have been to. It is usually quite stuffy, but once you get a seat everything falls into place.

I love coming here for miso soup, really. This, with their complementary green tea are unbeatable. Rolls are excellent, I honestly would continue coming as frequently even if they were to double the prices. No compromise over fresh sushi.

I got a fish curry - with a twist
Submitted Monday, September 14, 2015 - 3:00am [Dine in]

We walked in on a Friday at around opening time only to find the restaurant almost empty. It was pretty early for authentic curries, but our hunger got the best of us and we just went for it.

There was an open buffet going on, but we decided to skip it and order straight from the menu. Having been to countless Indian restaurants before, we knew exactly: garlic naan, fish curry (or at least that’s what I understood from the server) and some aloo gobi.

We started off our meal with some drinks while we waited for the food to arrive. The first to come was obviously the naan, which was delicious. The fish curry came medium spicy, which was great to still feel the flavor, but not get overwhelmed with the taste and have to be constantly resorting to your drink to bring down the level of spiciness. It was a little different from what we are used to, because it was brought in a different kind of preparation, but whatever they did made it extremely tasty. This goes without saying, but the aloo gobi was on point, as always.

Overall, it was a very gratifying meal. The taste of the fish curry, although different to what I have usually experienced, did wonders to our meal. A great way to stretch the limits of my experience with Indian cuisine.

Just Alright - Expected more
Submitted Friday, November 14, 2014 - 10:37pm [Dine in]

If I had to sum up this place in a short phrase, it would be this: it’s alright. Don’t expect anything special, and everything will be fine. Servers were quick and nice, but our table was not very clean. I had to clean it myself with a napkin. The food and drinks were okay, I liked the milk strawberry mango slush. I didn’t like the noodle soup I ordered, but my friend said the egg fried rice she had was good. One positive aspect is definitely the great location. Heard the other Bubble World locations are better, maybe I will visit those next time instead of this one.

This is how you should treat your customers
Submitted Friday, November 14, 2014 - 10:22pm [Dine in]

This place really deserves 4 stars. Handi is a pretty good restaurant, but lacks a bit in drinks...but that is alright as the service made up for it. The service is good. As soon as we stepped in, the staff greeted us and took us to the bar while we waited for a table. Here is where I found out that drinks aren't their finest point! The service was extremely courteous. Our waiter offered to help at all times and checked on us regularly (not going overboard either, which can be equally annoying). He gave us recommendations of food. We ordered four dishes to share: butter chicken, chicken vindaloo, aloo gobi recommended by our waiter and some lamb. The food tasted authentic, I really liked the way the lamb was seasoned. Surely worth a visit.

Mandarin Restaurant245 West 20 Street, Saskatoon
Mandarin - Great Dim Sum and Chinese Food but bad service
Submitted Wednesday, November 12, 2014 - 3:20pm [Dine in]

Mandarin is one of those restaurants that stay the same through time. I came back here after months and found everything to be the same. Now, while sometimes that is good, but there were some things, like their service, that I wish would have changed through the years.

But what keeps this restaurant bustling is their food. It is authentically GOOD. Probably the best in Saskatoon if you ask me. Because if it were for its ambience decor and service, this place would not be as popular. The restaurant does not seem to bother doing renovations or anything of the sort, it seems to run on its old customers? Because the outside exterior is not very inviting. Inside it is messy, and the way you are treated and served here by the waitresses leaves you dissatisfied. Yet it always gets busy, and let me tell you the restaurant is not small by any chance. Lots of people come in large groups of families so plan ahead - I had a problem getting a table and we were only three.

Likes: food - dim sum, gai lan, pekin pork chop
Dislikes: service

Moka Coffee Bar411E Herold Court, Saskatoon
Takes me back...
Submitted Wednesday, November 12, 2014 - 1:58am [Dine in]

Just coming back here brings me memories of early business meetings or readings. Moka was my go-to place when I used to live here. I have to admit I was a bit hesitant to come back here because I suspected it would have changed for the worse.

Thankfully, none of that happened. It is just like how I left it: small, cozy and intimate. I like coming here because it has that real coffee shop kind of feel to it - Starbucks and others are too over hyped and over sold. The coffee here is better and the options to choose are endless. There are several drinks to choose from, hot and cold. I would recommend a macchiato w/ whipped cream and caramel syrup. Nothing beats that with a cheesecake or muffin.

My choice for burritos
Submitted Tuesday, November 11, 2014 - 12:24am [Take-out]

You know a place is really good when you are a meat lover and you don't mind eating (and loving!) the vegetarian options on the menu. The food in this little hole in the wall is simply something you can't get enough of.

While they serve common items on the menu you will find in most mexican restaurants as staples - fajitas, tacos, burritos etc. - the way they are made here is something else. Fresh, to go and nothing like fast food. The vegetarian burrito is usually why I would come down here, back in the day when I used to work and live in Saskatoon, but their are other options on the menu as well. Other things I would recommend are, besides the burritos of course: pork fajitas, beef enchiladas, or if you are short on money, grilled tacos. The prices are not too high for the food though.

Tasty donairs / shawarma
Submitted Monday, November 10, 2014 - 12:08am [Dine in]

Although H67 has always been famous for their pizzas, I come here for their falafel & donairs.

I can't think of any other place in this city that can make better donairs than H67. For Saskatoon I mean. The donairs or shawarma, however you want to call it come with very tasty meat. I like getting the lamb one and combine it with some good tzaziki or ranch sauce. On top of that, the prices are real good.

Pita Pit, The1501 East 8th Street, #5B, Saskatoon
The Difference Between This Location and the Other One is Remarkable...
Submitted Sunday, November 9, 2014 - 11:28pm [Dine in]

So I normally wouldnt be reviewing a place like Pita Pit not because it is not worth it, but because I would think that it is all standar d/ the same (like any other franchise place, you know?) but after having been to the one downtown, this way is miles better. Word of advice: if you like your pita, do yourself a favor and go to this one. The other one will leave you with a bad impression...I went to the other one and it was a very unpleasant experience: in a nutshell, it was a combination of poor customer service, order mix-ups and lack of ingredients...and just simply SLOW.

The one on 8th street is something else though, which is the one I chose to review. The staff is friendly and quick with their orders. I like coming here to get a chicken breast or if I am feeling less adventurous, a good old black forest ham. The smoothies are good too - made fresh w/ natural ingredients.

WOW how I had missed this place. Nothing can beat the smell of freshly baked bagles. I loved coming here and still do for some bagels with cream cheese. They really are GREAT Canadian bagles.

Love: cream cheese on a bagel, western egg and cheese on a bagel.

Friendly service and quick. Just can't wait to go back and get a bag of bagels.

Great pizza, horrible service
Submitted Thursday, November 6, 2014 - 8:29pm [Delivery]

Tjs is one of those pizza places that used to resonate in my head. Back when I used to live in Saskatoon, I used to order from them all the time. The pizza was always consistently good (at least I never had a bad order). There is a plethora of toppings to choose from and the crust is simply delicious. You can't beat it.

This time around, I was met with a completely different view. I dont know if orders have gotten sloppy, it was a bad day for them etc, but as a former loyal customer of them, I was very disappointed. I ordered two bacon chicken ranch for my friends and I and when the delivery guy comes over ONE HOUR LATER, he brings the wrong order. There was no apology from him or anyone when I had to wait over two hours for my pizza. Anywhere else, this would be considered unacceptable. I guess here not.

La Bamba Cafe1025 Boychuk Drive, #3, Saskatoon
A good mexican option in town
Submitted Monday, November 3, 2014 - 10:57pm [Dine in]

Me and La Bamba Cafe go way back. A friend recommended me this place for authentic mexican food. As a BC resident, I can be hard to impress. But La Bamba did not disappoint, the food is actually really good. Yeah, I still dont know how to spell it, what a shame but the chilaqiles de pollo are really good. But I usually go for the sopes or tacos.

Pricing warning: not a cheap mexican place! But a good one nonetheless.
