Decent sushi place for lunch
Submitted Monday, February 18, 2008 - 1:41pm [Dine in]

Came here for lunch last weekend, and my friend had their lunch combo B and I had their Yakko chirashi don. The food was decent, nothing to rave about, but also nothing was bad with it. The fish seemed decently fresh, and not old or frozen like many other cheaper japanese places.

I was a little disappointed with my chirasi don, as the server said it was "a little of everything". It did have a lot of stuff in it, but it wasn't certainly "everything". The quantities were good, and the quality decent, but for $18 I wish it had a little more variety instead of like 3 pieces of tuna and 3 pieces of salmon.

Service was swift and tea refills were plenty. The only issue was trying to pay took quite a long time.

Its clean inside, but a little cramped as the tables seem a little too close together.

Would go again if in the area and hungry for sushi.

Poor quality food and service
Submitted Friday, February 15, 2008 - 4:24pm [Dine in]

Been here a few times on weekday lunches with coworkers. The last time was the worse experience, waited at the table for at least 10-15 minutes before the waitress came to take our food and drink order. Food arrived in a reasonable amount of time, except for food for 1 of my dining companions. Took several minutes before her food came. Also there were no utensils given. When asked they did not give enough and had to be asked again. We did get 1 drink refill though.

I ordered a "patty melt" special of the day, which consistented of one extremely overcooked hamburger pattty, which was very dry and hard. It also came with a slice of processed cheese on a burnt piece of garlic bread.

Avoid this restaurant, as even "safe" food such as burgers are not very safe.

poor service.. burnt food
Submitted Wednesday, January 16, 2008 - 6:08pm [Dine in]

Came here a while ago for dinner, and waited 15 minutes for someone to take our order. The restaurant was about 1/4 full at the time.

Ordered the shrimp and crab melt. My friend ordered a sandwich with fries. In 30 minutes her sandwich with fries comes. she eats it finish.. and i nibble at her fries. Once she was completely done I received my meal, which was totally black on one side.

I waved down a waitress and complained. The manager came out and gave me a new one (eventually), which was tasteless but at least not burned.

Service was almost non-existant. Would not come back here again.

Hot Plate Bistro, The1205 Madison Ave., Burnaby
Incredibly good quality for the price
Submitted Wednesday, January 16, 2008 - 5:56pm [Dine in]

Been to the hot plate bistro several times over the last few months and I have been consistently happy with their food. All their menu items are $10 or less. Although you won't get the giant portions like elsewhere for breakfast, it is enough for me to be full. All parts of the food are made fresh, and it shows in the taste and presentation. Service is a little slow, but I can't fault them for making everything fresh.

They have daily specials which seem to be different every time I go. The owners are extremely friendly and seemed happy to answer any questions I had.

I have had their specials, some items off their sunday brunch menu, as well as a few of their regular dishes. All were excellent.

The place itself is quite small, with only 4-5 tables. Very clean, and functional.

My favorite restaurant, definitely my pick to go food every week.

Better than average chain restarant...
Submitted Wednesday, January 16, 2008 - 5:44pm [Dine in]

I have been here a few times over the last year or so, and me meals were never bad, nor were they ever great.

I usually order a burger, breakfast food or something deep fried (like their deep fried shrimp). No complaints about quality. Portions are decent sized and they have comfortable booths.

Service is usually minimal but friendly when I go there.

Would go again if in the area and hungry for burgers or fried shrimp.

Horribly bad japanese food..
Submitted Friday, December 28, 2007 - 1:34am [Dine in]

I have been here a few times over the past few years for their AYCE, from people I know choosing to eat here, and not my own choice. Every time i have found the food universally bad, and the service rude and barely existant.

At best the sushi there is standard/ok, but usually i find it to be old and i suffered for it the next day. The cooked dishes i get are usually warm/room temperature and soggy. This goes for the tempura as well as the dons (rice bowls).

I don't think i'll be back again.. no matter who wants to go.

Amorosa Pasta House7874 Edmonds St., Burnaby
bland pasta place..
Submitted Friday, December 28, 2007 - 1:28am [Dine in]

The food portions are quite large, but its mostly pasta and very little "stuff" in the pasta. Also I found the 3 pasta dishes I tasted from what my party ordered to be all universally bland and not very good.

Service was pretty weak, with the waitress bringing our food and disappearing until it was the end of the meal. Was never asked how the food was, or if i wanted any drinks.

Pretty decent looking inside, it was clean, so no complaints.

Not sure why its so busy here, but i have only been here twice, and both times were poor experiences.

Great freshly made pasta
Submitted Thursday, December 27, 2007 - 12:20pm [Dine in]

Came here a few times and I have tried the special pasta dishes, and there were all excellent. I haven't tried anything that I didn't like yet. The Hand Made Tortellini and Cannelloni were my favorites, yum!

The servers are friendly but seem to spend a lot of time on a few tables, I assume the regulars. I found the service fine and friendly, but a little sparse. The restaurant itself has an old feeling to it and could use an upgrade, but isn't dirty.

good hotpot for cold evenings
Submitted Wednesday, November 21, 2007 - 3:32pm [Dine in]

I have had hotpot here for dinner several times in the last year and found them to be one of my favorite hotpot restaurants in richmond. I agree with a previous reviewer that even with reservations, you will have to wait a while if its Friday, Saturday or Sunday. They have a good selection of food and the service is hit or miss. They have some good servers and some not so great servers. Food comes out very quickly and the quality of food is pretty good.

I always come here if i'm in the area and i don't have reservations, since its impossible to get into the smaller hotpot places on the same road. Its a good bet either way though, its not as cramped as other places and service for bringing out food is very fast. You still need to sometimes wave down a person though if the restaurant is full. As a bonus, unlike most hotpot places, having clear broth there is no extra charge, so its a bit cheaper when its just two people enjoying hotpot for dinner.

HKYK Seafood Hot Pot Restaurant4260 No. 3 Road, Richmond
Decent food, horrible slow service
Submitted Wednesday, November 21, 2007 - 3:19pm [Dine in]

I had the all you can eat hotpot at HKYK for dinner twice in the last 2 months, and each time was a similar experience. I have no complaints about food quality, it was pretty good, although of a similar quality to other hotpot restaurants on alexandra road. Selection is quite large though, more than most hotpot places I have tried.

The main problem I have with HKYK is its consistently slow service. Both times I was there, every order took at least 30 minutes for the food to arrive. Since there is a time limit (like at most hotpot places), the most I can order is 3 times. Also my third order always gets cut off, as in they have no problem giving me exactly what i want in the first two orders, but my last order they decide not to give me 1/2 the stuff I ordered. They also have all you can drink pop or plum juice for just a dollar (or two?) more per person. This is not as great as it sounds, since they almost never come around to refill the drinks. I was not full when they gave me the bill, because the food came so slowly.

Lastly, both times I was there, my bill was incorrect, which seems tough to do since its a set price per person and the price of drinks. It was changed quickly when mentioned, this was the only fast part of their service.

The service ruins it for me, and I will not return. I gave them two chances, as service is sometimes a hit or miss in restaurants. To take 30-40 minutes to put raw food on a plate is too long.

Decent cheap malaysion food
Submitted Monday, October 1, 2007 - 1:12pm [Dine in]

I came here based on the reviews of this restaurant, but was disappointed. Went in the afternoon around 1pm a while ago and tried to order the prawn laksa as well as some chicken on rice. Both were apparently out. So instead I ordered some roti, some chicken curry as well as some spring rolls and a noodle dish.

I found the food decent and pretty cheap, but it took over 30 min for the appetizers to come out, and another 15-20 min for my meal. I might come back just to try out the laksa if I have a lot of time and in the area.

All you can eat hotpot with excellent service
Submitted Monday, September 17, 2007 - 2:01pm [Dine in]

Good selection of meat and veggies for $18 a person. I found their service fast and attentive. I received my food quickly and the waitresses asked me if I wanted more once my last plate had emptied into the pot. Food quality was overall good, and my only complaint is that the menu where you indicate the quantity of items was not in english.

The service here is by far the best of any hotpot place I have been to in richmond, as they are fast and attentive. The selection is less than other hotpot places on the same street and it felt a little crowded in there.

Would consider returning if it was a less busy time, was a little too noisy in there for my liking.

Pretty good for cheap eats
Submitted Monday, September 10, 2007 - 3:56pm [Dine in]

Ate here for lunch a few times as well as early dinners. I find the food here consistently decent to good for the price. Their lunch specials come with a hot drink (or $1 gets you a cold one). The mini-set meals are pretty good for $6.50 and is enough for me for dinner, not stuffed, but not hungry either. Had noodles with XO sauce, as well as the steak with black pepper sauce, would definitely be back if in the area. I have not tried food from their regular menu.

Service is quick and efficient, but certainly not attentive. You get your food (and bill) very fast. A little noisy in there and the tables are usually clean, but generally you want to eat, then get out.

Best Earl's location I have been to
Submitted Thursday, September 6, 2007 - 11:17am [Dine in]

The service at this location is excellent. The staff is almost always prompt and very friendly, and the food comes out quickly. The one time I complained about slow/poor service I received a phone call from the manager and they apologized and sent a gift card for my feedback. They may have their off days, but they definitely strive for excellent service.

It looks nice inside, but it tends to get loud at night which makes me want to leave soon after my meal is over instead of hanging around for a bit to have a chat with my friends. I have found it always nice and clean as well.

The food I think is consistently above average. Nothing that wows me, but I'm also never disappointed. I have tried most items on their menu from their burgers to their steaks and its always good. When i want to have a good safe meal I come here.

Poor food, indifferent servers
Submitted Friday, August 31, 2007 - 5:00pm [Dine in]

Went here a while ago and found their food barely edible. Had chicken wings which were room temperature and tasteless. Proceeded to have fish and chips. The fries were thankfully okay (but who can mess up fries?) but the fish was very fishy and I couldn't eat much of it.

I went saturday a little past noon and it was almost completely empty, yet service was extremely slow. I saw at least 3 waitresses but they seem to be in the back doing something 90% of the time I was there.

Was shown to a booth with torn seats (with tape to cover the damage) and a slightly sticky table.

Would not come back again.

Great beef noodle soup, fast service
Submitted Friday, August 31, 2007 - 4:52pm [Dine in]

I eat here every few months, and everything I have tried has been fantastic. Great beef noodle soup, as well as their dry noodles. I like how their noodles taste, and the soup broth is very good.

Service is very fast and I find them pretty good overall. I have tried the dumplings my friends recommended and I thought they were good but not great. Still prefer getting a bowl of noodles and some appetizers, such as the seaweed salad or their assorted cold meats plate.. yum!

Decent burger and fries for the price
Submitted Friday, August 31, 2007 - 1:56pm [Dine in]

I ate the burger and house fries for around $15 (before tax and tip) and thought it was pretty good, but just okay for $15. The house fries were great.. but the portion was pretty disappointing. I think I get more fries at like white spot or red robins.

The burger was fine, but i didn't think it was anything special. I was kind of disappointed as my friends recommended this restaurant.

Would not go back unless hungry and in the area.

Great service, yummy schnitzel
Submitted Friday, August 31, 2007 - 1:48pm [Dine in]

Came here last night and was impressed by the wonderful service given to me and my friend. Waitress was really friendly and helpful. So I was already pretty happy by the time I finished ordering, and service was consistently great throughout the entire meal.

Foodwise, this was the first time having schnitzel, and I thought it was pretty good. I started off with some toasted garlic bread, good but I like my garlic bread a bit more garlicy. Then I had an appetizer of whipped potatos with shrimp and scallops. This was a treat as it has a great flavor which was abosrbed into the potato.

My main meal was schnitzel with crab and shrimp. It also came with baked potatos and a pickled red cabage salad. The schnitzel was great tasting, thinly battered and very crispy! The only down side is that the crab that came with it was somewhat tasteless, and was a little on the small side.

Was a great experience and will definitely be back.

Good potsickers.. wonton soup
Submitted Friday, August 31, 2007 - 1:20pm [Dine in]

This restaurant seems pretty cramped and the tables never seem very clean. Service is fine... I get my food in a timely manner but then the servers seem to disappear from sight and ignore me unless I wave my hand frantically to get them to my table.

Food wise, I love their potstickers and wonton soup. I have tired their other dishes and I haven't found one that I thought was better than "okay".

I now usually end up buying the frozen pot stickers and making them at home. That way I don't have to deal with the restaurant. I only go back now to buy their frozen food.

Slow service, okay pasta, huge portions!
Submitted Tuesday, August 28, 2007 - 1:32pm [Dine in]

Haven't been to anton's in years so decided to give it a try again since they always seem so busy.

Found my pasta decent but not great. The sauce was pretty tastey, but the pasta itself was overcooked, as was the meatballs I had with it. The portions were huge, I could only eat about 2/3rds of it and I was super stuffed.

Service was slow, which was to be expected I guess since the restaurant was full on the saturday night. It was very noisy in there the night I went and it was difficult to talk. Definitely left there as quickly as possible after my meal.

Probably would not be back.
