Great noodle place
Submitted Thursday, June 5, 2008 - 6:01pm [Dine in]

I have been here a few times and I am never dissappointed. I like their beef noodle soup with tomato. The fried chicken nuggets I found also quite tastey, as well as the appetizers I have tried, such as the cold seaweed dish.

Not a big fan of the hand made dumplings, but it seemed to be a popular dish. Service is fine, but nothing special. Inside seems nice and clean.

Okay pasta place
Submitted Friday, April 25, 2008 - 1:28am [Dine in]

Had dinner here a little while ago with a friend. Its a relatively small place but clean and the service was friendly.

I also was asked how the food was by the chef, and I disagree with the previous reviewer, I think it is a mark of quality and care that the chef asks how it was. I let the chef know that I thought it was only okay and a little bland. The portions were large, but the noodles were a plain. My friend had the lasagna and we found the dish overcooked and the noodles were very mushy, almost gelatine like. I questioned him about it, but the said thats the way it is suppose to be. I am no expert in italian food by any means, but I was still skeptical.

The portions were enormous, but the quality was only so-so. Seemed to be filled with regulars when i visited, so perhaps I didn't order their specialities, as its obvious there were many return customers.

Decent dinner, missed the specials
Submitted Monday, April 14, 2008 - 1:26am [Dine in]

Had dinner a while ago, and unfortunetly came on the weekend, so missed their $20 for 5 item special. I found their menu pretty confusing and the descriptions of their food difficult to really know what i was ordering. The combos also seemed mostly in korean. I asked the waitress for opinions, and she responded with foreigners usually like these things, while gesturing to a few things. I'm like sure, i'll get those.

I got a noodle dish with black bean sauce, a seafood pancake and some stir fried beef. I found the beef a little tough, the black bean sauce noodle almost empty of contents except for a heavy black bean taste. The seafood pancake was okay, but overpriced.

The place was clean and pretty comfortable.

I may try again if i go during monday to thursday to try the 5 items for $20 special, otherwise I would not go again.

Tastey tofu soup and excellent dumplings
Submitted Monday, April 14, 2008 - 12:59am [Dine in]

I have eaten here a few times in the last few months, and they are consistently good.

They have a variety of kinds of tofu soup, but in reality, the portions of meat are pretty meager, so it doesn't really matter what you order. I usually get the dumplings in the soup or mushroom. There is a lack of non-tofu stuff in your soup, but its very tastey.

I recommend their fried dumplings. You get a good amount for the price, and its pretty good tasting. I have had their chicken and tofu soup combo, and found their chicken to be pretty good. I have also tried the large pot of rice with 8 different toppings, I don't remember the actual name of this dish, but was also happy with it. The tofu soup is very filling. It may look small, but it really fills me up.

I find them very consistent, and service a little sparse but friendly and helpful when asked.

Would recommend others to try here, but watch out for the limited english of some of the servers. Stay safe with the tofu soup (mild) and meat combination and you will be happy diner.

Not that great HK cafe food
Submitted Monday, April 14, 2008 - 12:47am [Dine in]

Had dinner here this weekend, and can't say I'm too impressed with it. It may be good for coquitlam, but its not good compared to other HK cafe places I have been to. Price wise, its more than other HK cafe restaurants I have been to.

I had the baked cod on rice, which was more pricey than almost every other place I have had it. My friend had the hotplate mix and match. The cod was ok, nothing special to warrant the increased price.

I rated the service as poor, because the hot plate they brought out was really really hot, as in hot oil was shooting out from the plate. They put it down like right in front of my friend, and she jumped back as a lot of tiny oil droplets hit her arm/face. The waiter just plut it down and left. I think that was pretty poor customer service. She just stood back from her table for a few minutes and then pushed the plate to the centre of the table.

The portions were generous but the quality was not good. We had chicken and pork filet. The cream of mushroom soup in the beginning was pretty bad, I would say worse or near from can quality. The dinner bun that came with it was ok.

I think with the poor service by placing a burning hot plate near my friend was pretty bad, but otherwise was ok, you could flag someone down if you looked hard enough for a few minutes. Food wise it was ok to not so good, and price wise it is significantly more expensive than other HK cafe places I have been in vancouver.

Fuji Sushi526B Clarke Rd, Coquitlam
Pretty solid Japanese food
Submitted Monday, April 14, 2008 - 12:19am [Dine in]

I have been to fuji sushi a few times and have had a good selection of their menu. I found most of their bbq items I have tried are pretty decent, but none of them were really great.

I have ordered the assorted sashimi as well as a few rolls before. I also tried a few special sashimi they had from japan. All were of good quality, the fish tasted pretty fresh. It is a little pricer than other sushi places in coquitlam or east burnaby, but its definitely a higher quality. You get what you pay for.

Service was decent, but a couple nights they seem to be too busy for their servers to handle.

Would be back if in the area.

Great value for good singaporean food
Submitted Monday, April 14, 2008 - 12:10am [Dine in]

Had lunch here today and was pleasantly surprised. The place looks a little run down and plain, but clean. Our server didn't dress very professional, kind of sloppy, but was attentive when we needed something and looked in his direction.

I shared some satay sticks, prata bread with beef curry and hainanese chicken. Satay sticks were pretty good, the nutty sauce that it comes with seemed a little different than other places though, but pretty tastey. Prata bread i found pretty good, but a little too floury tasting, but i have never had prata before, so I'm not sure if thats how its suppose to taste. The beef curry was very good. The hainanese chicken was pretty impressive as well.

Portions were larger than expected for the price. Definitely a great deal! They have tuesday to thursday dine in combo specials for 2 which bring the prices down even further. If you are looking for some good food for cheap, definitely come to Prata Man.

Would definitely return again.

Good but expensive cream puffs
Submitted Monday, April 7, 2008 - 6:23pm [Dine in]

Came here for the first time yesterday, and had 1 cream puff to see what the fuss is about. Waited in line almost 10 minutes and it costs $1.75 each if you want less than 6.

It was pretty good, definitely one of the best cream puffs I have eaten. Unfortunetly they were out of all other flavors except the regular flavor, which I found a little odd for a sunday early afternoon.

It is a little pricey and the wait is pretty long, as they come out in batches, but it is worth it once in a while if the wait isn't too long. Would go again without a lineup.

Great service, with fresh tasting mexican food
Submitted Sunday, March 30, 2008 - 11:41pm [Dine in]

Had dinner here tonight, and was more impressive than it looked from the outside. Decor here is pretty sparse, but clean. There were a few tables and a cart which held the cash register, sauces, napkins and plastic utensils.

First thing I noticed was the service was excellent. The waitress was extremely friendly and explained their specials and what type of food they were serving. Was asked if everything was okay when enjoying the meal, as well as when paying.

This restaurant is new, and it seems like they are trying to impress. They certainly impressed me with their service!

The food I wanted to like, because of the great service. I ordered a burrito, tacos and a tamale plate. They were good, very fresh tasting. It tasted good and fresh, but nothing really wowed me. I gave the food 3 stars since nothing was bad, and it tasted pretty good, but nothing was outstanding that would pull me in to come again.

Would return if in the area, but doubt if I would make a special trip to go there. Great service, hope they do well.

Decent okonmiyaki place
Submitted Wednesday, March 26, 2008 - 1:31am [Dine in]

Had their dinner combo here a while ago for dinner, and found it was decent, but a little expensive for what they have.

I got sunomono, which was small, and okay I guess. Expected to have something inside other than plain noodles. Sashimi was good, but tiny.

My main course was a beef okonmiyaki with udon noodles. Found it was ok, but mostly noodles for around $25. The exact price for the meal escapes me.

Service was fine, but there was nothing that great for a $25 meal. I think its nice to try once for the experience, but not again.

Submitted Tuesday, March 25, 2008 - 6:34pm [Dine in]

Came here for dinner two times, both times the service is friendly but sparse. Hard to wave someone down to get a tea refill or even the bill.

Food wise nothing was bad, but nothing stood out as great either. So I thought their food was pretty solid. Portions were decent in size and good for me. I was satisfied with the value, but I wouldn't say it is cheap.

I have tried their fish dinner, as well as their chirashi don, salad as well as a the gyoza. All were decent and consistent.

Clean and simple decor. Would be back if in the area.

Great special rolls with big value
Submitted Tuesday, March 25, 2008 - 6:12pm [Dine in]

Had dinner here last week and it was a very pleasent experience. The waitress was very friendly and helpful. Service was attentive, and tea refills were plentiful.

The dinner boxes are about the same price as many other japanese restaurants, $13-16 dollars, but are huge and pretty good quality. A dinner box is enough for a big eater. I also ordered beef tataki, which I found to be of a high quality.

What I liked the best about the food was their special rolls. The tiger rolls are really good, as is their tropical roll. I was a little disappointed in the size of their tropical roll, but it was at least very tastey and unique.

Will definitely be back!

Submitted Tuesday, March 25, 2008 - 6:06pm [Dine in]

Came here a while ago, and it seems that the eat in part of this restaurant is almost always closed, I guess they need to find a waitress?

Food is still pretty decent, but I have had better pizza and pasta around town for the same price. Lasagna is still good, and the service is decent for a take out place.

Perhaps I was really hungry when I gave the first review, but nothing tasted quite as good as the first time. Also the rare times that the eat in is open, its dark and too warm or too cold.

Submitted Tuesday, March 25, 2008 - 6:01pm [Dine in]

Came a few times lately for take out, and what a change from a year ago. Their staff seems to have changed for the worse lately and it shows in their food.

I ordered a few rolls and it was poorly rolled, it seemed a little sloppy. I also noticed that the taste was not as good, I agree with previous reviewer that the roll itself tasted a little off.

My sashimi was also very frozen, like it came out of the freezer a few minutes ago. I will not be back, perhaps next year to see if they have improved.

Great for all you can eat place
Submitted Wednesday, March 12, 2008 - 1:06am [Dine in]

Had dinner here a few days ago, and enjoyed the great selection of food. I had the deluxe AYCE for $22 a person. Was pleasantly surprised at the selection as well as quality. For an all you can eat restaurant, I think the quality is better than almost all AYCE places.

They had some nice stuff on their menu, such as prawn tempura, without needing the vegetables to go with it, which was nice for people who just like the prawns. I found their wild salmon actually quite good and tastey, as well as their beef tataki. One downside is that portions seem strange, as I ordered beef tataki 3 times, and each time it was signifcantly bigger or smaller than the order before, like double as big or small. The roti I found a little disappointing, but found their lobster, geoduck and sharkfin (jellyfish) sushi quite tastey. Their scallop motoyaki was decent, as well as almost everything else I ordered.

The service was quite good once I got into the restaurant, spent a few minutes at the front before got acknowledged. But once seated, they came often to ask if we wanted to order more, we got another order sheet each time, and nothing was "forgotten" like other AYCE places.

I give this place 4 stars, since its a great place compared to other AYCE places. Try it out, you won't be disappointed.

good tacos, not so great others
Submitted Wednesday, March 12, 2008 - 12:56am [Dine in]

I had dinner here with a friend and I got all their different kinds of tacos (there were 7 in total) as well as their rice and beans combo with it.

The tacos ranged from not good, like the chicken I found very bland, tasted like steamed/boiled chicken, to great, the beef as well as the pork with sausage were very good. I do realize that you are suppose to put salsa and chilis/onions with it, but I expect it to be somewhat tastey without. They have several different salsas which I found pretty good.

The rice was hard, like crunchy. The beans were almost tasteless, not sure how they were suppose to taste. Did not enjoy the beans or rice at all, had about 1/2 of it, then left the rest, as it was too crunchy/bland.

Service was pretty decent, food came quick. Music was pretty loud in here, as well as the seating a little cramped, at least where I was sitting. Definitely not a place to hang around after finishing your meal.

Perhaps I just didn't order the right things, but a few things good, and a lot of things not good, I would not come back again most likely. I have been to other mexican restaurants with similar prices that I enjoyed much more.

HK cafe style cheap eats
Submitted Thursday, February 28, 2008 - 6:06pm [Dine in]

Had dinner here a few weeks ago and thought it was a solid place to eat when hungry and low on money. Meals here with drinks are under $10 including tax and tip. Food was decent but for the price I thought it was well worth it. They put crushed ice if you order a lemon coke, which is a small detail but makes the meal that much better. I had the seafood alfredo with rice and my friend had the porkchop with rice. Nothing great, but no complaints either. Portions were large enough to fill me up.

Would go back if looking for some late night eats.

good for late night snack
Submitted Thursday, February 28, 2008 - 5:54pm [Dine in]

went to a late dinner here last week. Had a combo with chicken and prawn cutlet, and sausage with bacon and rice, and my friend had the baked pork chop.

Portion wise was pretty decent, with a good stuff to rice ratio. Service was fast but nothing great about it. Everyone seemed a little unhappy and in a rush, but no problems ordering, getting drinks or food in a timely manner.

Food was relatively good for price, but they seemed to run out of their dessert so gave me a baked potato instead (without tell me beforehand).

Chicken cutlet was pretty good, but the "prawn cutlet" was just a few pieces of prawn, and the sausage with bacon was just 3 pieces of small sausage wrapped in bacon.

Easy parking in the back and the good chicken cutlet makes it a decent pick for me as well as the reasonable prices.

too expensive for average HK cafe food
Submitted Thursday, February 28, 2008 - 1:51pm [Dine in]

Went to pittsburg on a wednesday evening for an early dinner. I tried their baked seafood with alfredo sauce on rice, and my friend tried their baked porkchop with tomato sauce on rice.

Service was pretty decent, food arrived in a timely manner and had no problems getting more tea. The place was reasonably clean, although a little strange looking.

The problem was the food. My friend's pork chop consisted of at least 50% bone or fat. most of it was uneated. It came with a large amount of fried rice with egg. My seafood baked rice was decent, but the cheese was past its prime (though not bad). It came with a drink, soup and a small almond jello, and came up to over $15 a person before tax/tip. This is quite expensive if you compare to other HK cafe type restaurants in the local area. I would not be back, as it is almost double the price of similar places.

Decent food, brutally slow
Submitted Monday, February 25, 2008 - 12:06pm [Dine in]

I went to dinner at the Cactus club a few days ago, and to avoid the main dinner crowds I went there at 8pm. Drinks were ordered and they came within 10 minutes. Ordered our meals around 8:15, and the food did not start coming until 9:15 to 9:30 when the last meal came in. It was too long a wait for food at that time at night. Food was pretty decent for the price, but I would not go back again as 1 hour to get our food was too long.

Even when paying we had to wait about 15 minutes before the waitress would come back to take my credit card to pay for the meal. It was not a great experience and service was overstretched. The waitress did seem to be doing her best, but it looks like they are short staffed.
