I enjoy this place
Submitted Tuesday, October 21, 2008 - 3:49pm [Dine in]

From reading the reviews here, I think probably Tropika is not as consistent as a restaurant should be, but I enjoy my experience here. The food is very delicious and reasonably priced. Service is not outstanding, but friendly and efficient enough. As for decor, the restaurant is a bit old and tired looking. There is some room for improvement, but overall, it's a good place to have a pleasant casual meal.

Top Quantity
Submitted Monday, October 20, 2008 - 4:09pm [Dine in]

I have been to this restaurant quite a few times, and it's often because some other restaurant in the neighbourhood is closed or has a long line-up. The restaurant is quite large, so you almost always get a table right away. Food is never really bad, but never really good either. The portion, however, is always huge. Maybe "Top Quantity" is a more suitable name?? :):):)

Passable
Submitted Monday, October 20, 2008 - 3:55pm [Dine in]

I am giving a 2 rating for every category because everything seems just passable, and nothing is exceptional. Food is so-so, and the portion is quite small. We went at a time when they weren't busy at all (only 3 tables were occupied), but the food took quite some time to arrive, and the bill took even longer.
I am not sure if I will come back - there doesn't seem to be a good reason to return.

Poor everything
Submitted Thursday, October 2, 2008 - 1:17pm [Dine in]

I don't think I've ever given a 1 rating for every single catagory because most restaurants do have some redeeming value. But not this one. The food is pretty bad; the wontons taste like they have been sitting around for too long. The service was pretty bad too, at least it was for me. I was not expecting too much to begin with; just a quick bite and I would be on my way. But it took almost half an hour to get my bowl of wonton noodles. I was sitting there watching those who came after me finishing their meals, and I was still waiting. From what I observed, there were quite a few long time customers, and the wait staff was very friendly to them. I got the feeling that they are happy with their existing clientele and are not interested in "intruders" like myself. Maybe if I go back a few more times they will become interested in serving me too. But no, I don't think it's going to happen.
As for value, what they charge is not much, but it is way too much for what they offer.

Room for improvement
Submitted Monday, September 22, 2008 - 3:32pm [Dine in]

This is a nice family restaurant. Food is pretty good, though a tad too salty for my taste. Presentation is also nice. No complaints here. There is some room for improvement in the service department, though. No offence, and nothing's out of tune here, but if the owner/manager could just keep his singing voice a little lower, perhaps the customers can enjoy their meals and conversations a little better:):)

Outstanding Restaurant
Submitted Monday, September 22, 2008 - 3:10pm [Dine in]

This is very nice place to have a relaxing meal in the middle of downtown. Food is outstanding. I had the calamari lunch this time and really enjoyed the tender texture and just-right taste. Service is not exceptional, but friendly and efficient enough. The portion size is very generous. All in all, a solid restaurant all around. Recommended.

Salt on sale here
Submitted Sunday, September 7, 2008 - 8:30pm [Dine in]

I don't know if this is their usual quality, or if the regular chef is away, or is simply absent-minded and threw in too much salt, but both dishes we ordered today were way too salty to eat. Just a couple bites will probably give you three days' worth of recommended sodium intake. Needless to say, we won't be back anytime soon.

Unimpressed
Submitted Wednesday, August 20, 2008 - 12:58pm [Dine in]

The food we ordered was decent, but quite greasy. Service was friendly and prompt, but not exceptional. The main thing that we really did not enjoy was the ambiance. It was a small family restaurant and the tables were close together. Ventilation wasn't all that great either. That evening the table next to us ordered stinky tofu and we had that distinct smell floating to our table all evening. Now I understand that there are a lot of people who actually enjoy that, but for those who don't, this makes for a most unpleasant meal. I don't know how they can solve this problem for the customers, or indeed if they even think it's a problem, since they have decided to include it in the eat-in menu. But I would think twice before going to this restaurant again.

Go there for the food
Submitted Monday, August 11, 2008 - 8:35am [Dine in]

The food is very good, fresh ingredients and nicely prepared and presented. portion size is also quite good. But service is minimal and extremely slow, considering there were only three other people there when we arrived. Food (salad and sandwich, which did not require much cooking) took a long time to arrive. The bill took even longer.

One of a kind
Submitted Tuesday, August 5, 2008 - 10:59pm [Dine in]

This is an interesting place. The decor is kind of unusual - yellow and green walls with brown porcelain decorations hanging on the walls. Doesn't exactly fit my taste, but this place is very clean and bright. Food is great - fresh and yummy, large portion, good price and also has a large selection. Service - well, that is interesting too. We were greeted and seated promptly, but as soon as we sat down and were given menus, all the servers disappeared for 10 minutes. We had to look around for someone to get us water and take our order. But once you manage to find someone, service is very courteous, friendly and prompt. In our case, I think the owner himself came to take our order - a very personable fellow who makes you feel right at home. I will probably come back to have their great food and to experience this unique place again.

Fun Dining
Submitted Saturday, August 2, 2008 - 9:34pm [Dine in]

Even though there's a lot of activities going on with push carts all over the place, everything is run very smoothly. It's noisy, for sure, but that's what you would expect in a dimsum place. It's fun picking out your favorite dimsum, and they sure have a great selection. Service is polite and friendly and food is nice and hot. All in all, it's a very well-managed restaurant. I would recommend this place to those who enjoy this type of dining experience.

Reliable Quality, Efficient Service
Submitted Thursday, July 31, 2008 - 11:25am [Dine in]

Whenever I find myself needing a later and/or lighter than usual dinner, I think of Au Wing Kee. I often order wonton noodle soup with a plate of veggies with oyster sauce, or a bowl of congee. They always come promptly and well-prepared. I have tried the bigger dishes too, and their quality is also reliable. Very solid performance all these years. One thing, though, is they only accept cash.

Good value casual dining
Submitted Friday, July 11, 2008 - 11:48pm [Dine in]

This is a solid family restaurant. Food is tasty (BBQ baby back ribs and steak today) and service is prompt and friendly. Atmosphere is casual and comfortable. Nothing too fancy here, just a delicious and very satisfying meal at a very reasonable price. It probably won't be too long before I come back again. Recommended.

Not the best
Submitted Tuesday, July 1, 2008 - 5:21am [Dine in]

Not the best food, not the best service. We ordered a sirloin steak with rigatoni and salmon in bell pepper sauce. The taste was OK but the texture was kind of tough for both. Service was slow and very inattentive. It took them a long time just to figure out who should be bringing the bill. Interesting!!! We will probably not be going back anytime soon.

Great Bratwurst
Submitted Monday, May 26, 2008 - 10:47pm [Dine in]

They serve good food. I especially enjoy the bratwurst dinner - with vegetables, red cabbage, potatoes ... Portion is also generous, and the price very, very reasonable. Our waitress was very friendly, and I can tell she tried very hard to be attentive as well, but it seemed like she had way too much to do. Perhaps the owner should consider hiring a couple more servers so their service doesn't have to suffer.

Submitted Sunday, April 20, 2008 - 6:28pm [Dine in]

It's my first visit there and seeing the long line up outside, I had high expectation before going in. It's one big, busy and noisy place at meal time. We ordered souvlaki (lamb, prawn), calamari and moussaka. Food is decent, but not exceptional. Overall, it's not bad for the price, but it's not so wonderful that I would stand in line to eat there again.

Happy Waiter with the Perpetual Smile :):)
Submitted Saturday, April 12, 2008 - 11:37pm [Dine in]

I am surprised this restaurant has not been reviewed. It has been around for years, a solid family restaurant with a good chef. I have been there numerous times for lunch as well as for dinner, and have especially enjoyed the good value lunch items they offer. Service is usually just decent, but if Mr. Smiling Waiter is working that day, you get exceptionally friendly and cheerful service, which makes for a more enjoyable meal.

Pretty good
Submitted Saturday, April 12, 2008 - 12:14pm [Dine in]

Everything is solid but not outstanding. Food is fresh and healthy (ordered soup and panini/ soup and wrap combos for lunch). Service is fast and reasonably attentive. Ambience is also good - comfortable and relaxing. Portion, though, is quite small, even for a small eater. I probably won't be a regular just yet, but I certainly don't mind going back if I am in the neighbourhood.

Food: I ordered a curry dish and it's tasty and not oily at all. The portion is generous. Service: just OK. Ambiance: fairly noisy, but the booths are quite spacious. On the whole, there's nothing particularly impressive; nothing really lacking either. I would go back if I am in the area.

Don't go
Submitted Sunday, March 23, 2008 - 5:43pm [Dine in]

BC roll, California roll, spider roll - the seaweed is tough and chewy and the rice falls apart, making a mess. Teriyaki chicken - sauce is thickened with a ton of cornstarch. Miso soup - way too salty with very little "soy" flavour. Tempura - comparatively the best of all the items we ordered, but still not what I would call "tasty". With all the better choices I can have in the area, I don't think I will be going back.
