Fresh, Fresh, Fresh
Submitted Tuesday, June 16, 2009 - 1:19pm [Dine in]

I notice the last review here is almost two years old, so perhaps a little update is in order. I was here just a few days ago to order take-out. The food was very fresh and the portion size very good for the price. There was no line up when I was there, so service was fast. The only thing, though, was that the young woman behind the counter looked like she didn't want to be there at all. A little friendliness would have made this a much more pleasant experience.

Solid all around
Submitted Tuesday, June 16, 2009 - 12:56pm [Dine in]

I found the old Orange Room quite nice. This newly re-opened restaurant is also solid all around. Food is fresh and tasty and I especially enjoy their salad, although I found the brunch menu quite limited. Service is friendly and reasonably fast. I also like the ambience, but I have to note that I have only been to brunch since they re-opened, so no comment here on the dinner atmosphere.

We walked in at normal meal time and the owner/server was watching TV and enjoying his meal. There was not another customer in sight in the large dining room and the lights were not turned on - not a good sign. I actually thought the place was not in business. Anyway, we sat down and ordered. Food came after a reasonable amount of time, probably time needed to reheat a couple of frozen meals. Service was good, considering that we interupted his meal :):) But if I want reheated frozen food, I've got an oven and a microwave at home too.

This modern and nicely decorated restaurant/cafeteria is inside Sears downtown. It was quiet when we were there last weekend, and the service was quite fast. Food was great. I am not a huge burger fan, but the teriyaki chicken burger I ordered was really good and substantial. The salad was fresh. I had an enjoyable lunch and would recommend this place.

Sodium Overload
Submitted Tuesday, March 24, 2009 - 4:03pm [Dine in]

This is supposed to be a bubble tea place, but their bubble tea is pretty bad, very watery and the bubbles are hard and chewy. The food is worse. Our table ordered three items, baked pork chop on rice, Taiwanese beef noodles and spicy beef brisket noodles. None reached passing grade, in my opinion. The worst was the spicy beef brisket noodles - not spicy, but extremely salty. It's a good thing the bowl was only about 1/3 full because I had to pour two glasses of water into it to dilute the soup. Even then it's hard to finish the whole thing.
Service was OK, and the ambiance was actually quite nice, clean and comfortable. Nice place to hang out, but what should we order???

The dimsum is decent and edible, not anything memorable. Service is OK. They get their job done with some efficiency. At this price range, I don't really expect anything fancy, and I do understand that this is a busy place at meal time, but I thought cleanliness is pretty basic if you're a restaurant. So unless they clean up (I will find out from the reviews here), I will probably not be back.

Hotpot on a Cold Day
Submitted Tuesday, March 17, 2009 - 6:03pm [Dine in]

It's always comfortable to have a hotpot on a cold evening. The soup in the seafood hotpot tastes pretty good, but the seafood is extremely overcooked, may be a sign that the ingredients are not the freshest. The presentation also looks nothing like the giant pictures they put on their windows :):). The value is decent - not expensive, but at the same time, portion is quite small. Ambiance is nice and clean, a huge improvement from the previous restaurants at the same location.

Decent food and service
Submitted Monday, March 16, 2009 - 2:03pm [Dine in]

This is a smallish, Korean run family restaurant on busy Denman street. Of the few items we ordered for lunch at our last visit, the little side dishes (bean sprouts, fish cakes, seaweed ...) were all pretty good, deserving a 3 rating, but the beef soup was totally lacking in flavours. Service was minimal. There was only one server and she pretty much just took our order, delivered the food, and brought the bill. She didn't even have time to fill our tea cups, and the restaurant was not even full at the time.

Huge menu
Submitted Tuesday, February 24, 2009 - 2:02pm [Dine in]

We were greeted promptly and given a pile of menus. It would have taken a good 10-15 minutes just to read through them, but we settled on their lunch specials. The curry beef with rice was very nicely done, not greasy and just the right amount of spice. The congee combo (with rice rolls), however, wasn't so good. The congee felt kind of starchy and the rice rolls were a little hard. Service was prompt and ambiance was also pretty good - clean and comfy. I will probably visit again to try out some of the other menu items.

One more server will make a big difference
Submitted Wednesday, February 11, 2009 - 2:48pm [Dine in]

The food is very good here, especially the tempura - the batter is so light and delicate. I also enjoy their rolls and sushi. The ingredients are fresh and the presentation beautiful. The service, however, is very, very slow. The server is nice and friendly, but with a full house plus a stream of customers ordering take-out, the service suffers. I hope they seriously consider hiring another server on busy days.

Good things come in small packages
Submitted Sunday, January 18, 2009 - 4:20pm [Dine in]

Good things do come in small packages sometimes. This family restaurant has only about 8-9 tables and one waitress. When we went there today, it was almost full house. The waitress was working non-stop, serving some 20+ people, but she was wearing a pleasant smile all the time and was attentive to all the customers. Food is well-prepared and comes in generous portions. The value is definitely unbeatable. As for ambiance, the restaurant is small and kept very clean. It was hardly surprising that a lot of people who came in looked like they were repeat customers. Highly recommended if you like Vietnamese food.

Disappointing Visit
Submitted Friday, January 16, 2009 - 10:55pm [Dine in]

I like the Au Wing Kee in Burnaby and thought this one would be comparable. It was a disappointing first visit. The noodle soup with fish balls looked a lot better than it tasted that day. And service was pretty much non-existent, extremely slow and unattentive. We even had to ask for the menu. They were obviously under-staffed that day, so I might consider giving them a second try if I happen to be in the neighbourhood because of the one in Burnaby.

Solid Performance
Submitted Friday, January 16, 2009 - 12:08am [Dine in]

Of the two dishes we ordered, I'd give the "eggplant in plum sauce" 4 stars, and the "stir-fried squid with chili pepper" 2 stars. The squid was too dry and hard and the taste was kind of bland. Service was pretty good; the two waitresses were both friendly and courteous. The restaurant is very small, and kept very clean. I wish the chairs were a bit more comfy though. Overall, a solid performance all around. Worth a try.

Friendly Little Place on Cambie
Submitted Monday, December 15, 2008 - 4:53pm [Dine in]

Spices does not look like the typical Vietnamese restaurant. The decor is more modern and cozier, and the service is friendly and prompt. The menu has a lot of good selections, and a number of combination plates. We ordered a beef noodle soup and a combination that includes Vietnamese spring rolls, steamed crepe, a chicken brochette and fried rice. Except for the brochette which was slightly burnt, others were all pretty good. The noodle soup, too, was hot and tasty. Price was a little higher than the typical Vietnamese restaurant, but then, it's also nicer than the typical Vietnamese restaurant. All in all, it's a solid choice for a casual meal.

Unhappy Customer :(
Submitted Monday, December 8, 2008 - 2:40pm [Dine in]

The King may be happy, but the customer sure isn't. The food isn't great, but it's not terrible either. It's pretty standard fare and I won't be too critical about it. The service, however, is just awful. I wasn't expecting much to begin with, but they really didn't have to be so deliberate in making a mess. When they could have easily put down a bowl of soup or a cup of tea on your table, they made it a point to tilt the containers so they spilt. And this is not just one server. I was sitting quite close to the kitchen and serving area, and it definitely seemed like they were trained to make a mess. On top of this, they were also yelling at one another and making lots of noise with the utensils, as if their goal was to make the dining experience horrible for the customers. This is not the Happy King I remember from a few years back. And I don't think I'll be back anytime soon.

Gorgeous View, Professional Service
Submitted Tuesday, November 18, 2008 - 5:53pm [Dine in]

The greatest asset of this restaurant is truly its location. The view is gorgeous whether during the day or in the evening. Service is attentive, but not overly so, and very professional. The food, however, has some room for improvement. While the ginger carrot soup and clam/mussle appetizers were very nice, the black cod and rack of lamb we ordered were kind of bland. The desserts were not bad. But I think in general the presentation of the food was much better than their taste. Overall, it isn't perfect but it's a solid choice for a nice evening out.

Lovely Place for a Casual Meal
Submitted Monday, November 10, 2008 - 1:56pm [Dine in]

Food is very well-prepared and presented. We ordered a hot pot and a bento box with sashimi. Every component of the meals is fresh and tasty. Service is polite and pleasant. As others have commented, this isn't a typical restaurant; it's more like a cafeteria - bright and clean, also very spacious and the armchairs are comfortable. Highly recommended for a casual meal.

Slow fast food :)
Submitted Monday, November 10, 2008 - 1:44pm [Dine in]

Food quality is like what you get at food courts, but you have to wait 3 times longer. Even their daily special takes forever to arrive. Price plus tips is higher than the average food court. The only good thing is the huge portion. But then why would you want so much of something that's just passable? No wonder there isn't a lot of people there. I don't think I will be back any time soon.

A smile would've been nice
Submitted Monday, November 3, 2008 - 1:12pm [Dine in]

The grilled baby squid was tasty and tender. The souvlaki was a bit tough, but on the whole, both dishes we ordered were pretty good. The ambiance was nice too, lively music but not too, too loud. The only thing I wasn't too happy about was the server. To be fair, she did take our order, bring our food, bring the bill, did everything she was supposed to do, but she was very, very cold. I thought a smile would have been nice. After all, she's in the service industry and a little friendliness won't hurt.

I have been to Kam's a few times because it is conveniently located for me. The food is not bad, but not wonderful either - and I have tried a number of different dishes here. Their lunch menu has some good selections. Service is prompt and pleasant. As long as it does not move away, I think I will be back once in a while.
