Everything going down except the price
Submitted Monday, January 18, 2010 - 12:24pm [Dine in]

I haven't been to Pittsburg in a while and was surprised to find everything had gotten worse. The only good thing, though, was there was no more line-up, even on a weekend. But of course there is a reason for it. The beef ribs dish I ordered was greasy and somewhat tough. A couple years ago they did the same dish much better at a lower price. I do understand when costs go up and restaurants have to increase their prices, but please at least maintain the same quality and quantity. I hope the owners read these reviews and do something quickly.

Good value
Submitted Tuesday, January 5, 2010 - 5:21pm [Dine in]

This is a medium size casual restaurant, clean and well-run. The servers are friendly and efficient. Food is very tasty. We ordered their dinner for two with a chicken hotpot and a duck dish the other day. It came with their soup of the day, steamed rice and dessert. The only thing I don't really like is that they put too much cornstarch in their sauces. But with their great selection and unbeatable value, this is something I can live with. Will definitely recommend.

Mediocre
Submitted Monday, December 14, 2009 - 11:30am [Dine in]

I am so glad DineHere changed the rating (2) description from "decent" to "mediocre". Penny fits this description exactly. The food isn't so bad that it's inedible, but it is definitely below "decent". The dishes are way too greasy and you can tell by the presentation that very little care is put into the preparation. The "Penny" I remember from long ago was not like this. Something has changed and it's not for the better.

Beautiful sushi
Submitted Monday, November 23, 2009 - 5:24pm [Dine in]

It's a beautiful restaurant with beautiful sushi. The ingredients are fresh and they pay attention to details, so their sushi are tasty as well as lovely to look at. Service is not the most efficient, but everybody seems friendly. Even the sushi chefs behind the counter take the time to thank you when you leave. And the value is great - their California roll costs less than the pre-packaged supermarket variety. Other specialty rolls cost more, but still very, very good value compared to other sushi places in the area. Highly recommended.

Too much MSG
Submitted Thursday, November 12, 2009 - 3:04pm [Dine in]

This is a decent Vietnamese noodle place. The food tasted pretty good, but I just found it had a bit too much MSG. The pho wasn't the best the other day, but the rice dish was not bad. There wasn't much service, which is typical of these places. Ambiance was bright and clean and the washroom was decently tidy for a place like this. If you want something cheap and filling and don't mind the lack of service, this is worth a visit.

Nice Decor
Submitted Thursday, November 12, 2009 - 2:51pm [Dine in]

I have been to Green Basil a couple of times. The food is nothing special, just decent. The lunch specials are a pretty good deal. Service is efficient and friendly enough. The restaurant is quite modern and nicely decorated, but the tables are very close together and it gets quite noisy when it's near full house.

Nice Turkey Dinner
Submitted Friday, November 6, 2009 - 4:47pm [Dine in]

The turkey dinner with cinnamon apples on the side was very, very good. I enjoyed it a lot and will probably come back for it soon. I have been to a couple of Pantry Restaurants. Their menu seems a bit limited, without too much choice, but what they have there they do well. The value is definitely there.

Good food, friendly staff
Submitted Thursday, October 1, 2009 - 2:43pm [Dine in]

We went for lunch on a not so busy day. The staff - host, server and busboy - were very friendly. Food was great, and was served in a timely manner. We had lamb chop and seafood chilli fried rice. The lamb was very nicely done with a great aroma. The rice I found a little too moist for fried rice, but still very good, with large prawns and scallops. The restaurant is spacious but very dark, and it looks a bit dated too. It can probably use some more lighting or a fresh coat of paint. Other than that, no complaints from me. I will probably go back if I am in the area.

Good burger, not so good fish and chips
Submitted Monday, September 28, 2009 - 6:15pm [Dine in]

I will not order their fish and chips again. The batter on the fish is too heavy. The fries are good, though. Their Red Robin burger, on the other hand, tastes great, though a tad dry. Service is good. They seemed to have way more servers than they needed on the day we visited - or way fewer customers than they expected.

Good food, noisy room
Submitted Tuesday, September 22, 2009 - 2:44pm [Dine in]

We enjoyed the calamari and meatball dishes very much. Service was also pretty good and the value is definitely there. But the place was really, really noisy. And there is one thing I wish to point out, though, about using an Entertainment Book coupon. The waiter explained that the total final bill has to exceed a certain amount if we wished to use the coupon, which meant we had to order more than we could finish. I understand the restaurant has every right to set its rules regarding the use of coupons, but it would be nice if things are kept simpler. For example, just cap the discount amount at, say, $10.00 instead of $14.00, rather than make your customers order more than they want to. And also, the $14.00 discount turned out to be something like $13.29 because the tax is included in the discount. Well, no one is going to make a big fuss about the 79 cents difference, but it does not leave a very good impression. Just a suggestion from an otherwise satisfied customer.

Solid performance, good value
Submitted Tuesday, September 22, 2009 - 2:22pm [Dine in]

We were greeted promptly and cheerfully. The wait staff was attentive but never intrusive. Food was very tasty and portion size generous. I ordered the cajun fish fillet with a shrimp skewer, enjoyed it thoroughly and had plenty left over to take home too. I will likely come back to this location in the future.

1.5 really
Submitted Monday, September 21, 2009 - 3:22pm [Dine in]

Since I can't give a 1.5, I will be more generous. The pasta dish I ordered had too much cheese but little else. The meat didn't taste fresh at all. Service was not exactly poor, but not great either, just passable. It's not likely I will return anytime soon, even though it's fairly conveniently located.

I have had better
Submitted Monday, September 21, 2009 - 3:15pm [Dine in]

We had the ginger lamb and Mongolian chicken the other evening. I find the lamb dish tasted pretty good but had way too much meat tenderizer.
The chicken, however, was just very spicy, without much flavour. The service was good and the restaurant was nice and spacious, good for a quiet meal. Will I return? If I happen to be in the area, I might give it another try.

Good but pricey burgers
Submitted Saturday, September 19, 2009 - 3:11pm [Dine in]

If you like burgers, you'll probably enjoy this place. They serve a variety of burgers, some more creative than others. Service was pretty good on the Saturday lunch time when I visited last time. And the decor was nice too, with lots of green hanging plants. I, not being a huge burger fan, find the burgers a little pricey. But if you are one, by all means try this place.

Good but Pricey
Submitted Tuesday, August 4, 2009 - 12:13pm [Dine in]

The ice-cream they serve is very creamy and not super sweet, a wonderful treat on a hot day. The size is also enormous. But I am not sure I want to spend $5 for a single scoop with mix-in, or more for other items. Service was fast and the ambiance was bright and clean. Not sure why 300 characters are required for a review, but that's all I want to say about this place.

Look before you sit
Submitted Saturday, August 1, 2009 - 1:37pm [Dine in]

I am being a little generous in the food rating. It's more like a 1.5. Two dishes we ordered: Kung Pao chicken which was decent and a vegetarian dish which was totally bland with tough soybean curd. Service was OK but ambiance was pretty bad. There was a slightly stale kind of smell in the air, even though air conditioning was on that day. One of the chairs at our table was covered with crumbs. When we told the waitress, instead of cleaning it, she moved the chair to the next table, without removing the crumbs. The food and service offered are like some of the dirt-cheap places in town, but the prices they charge are not. No wonder there weren't many customers. The value is poor.

Beautiful decor
Submitted Monday, July 20, 2009 - 11:29am [Dine in]

As soon as I entered, I liked this place. The decor is very modern and tasteful, and the atmosphere casual and comfortable. We ordered a butter chicken with rice, and an omelette for lunch. Both were pretty good, except the chicken was a little bit dry. The service, though, was not something I was happy with. It's not that they were rude or anything. It was just very slow and disorganized. It looked like the workers weren't sure who was supposed to do what, and they tried to avoid eye contact for a long time, until they were ready to come to your table. If they could just work harder on the service department, this restaurant has a huge potential.

For the budget-minded
Submitted Monday, July 20, 2009 - 11:13am [Dine in]

The menu has a good selection of Vietnamese sandwiches, noodle soups, rice and combo dishes, all at very good prices. I had a traditional noodle soup the other day and it was pretty good. It was probably not laden with MSG as I felt quite all right afterwards. It was a good lunch except for one thing: there was a young man (customer) who was severely linguistically deficient and had huge problem finishing any sentence without the use of the same swear word at least three times. Poor fellow, and he was loud too. I know this isn't the fault of the restaurant, but unfortunately, he looked like a regular, and this will play a part in my decision to return to this restaurant.

Happy server
Submitted Thursday, July 9, 2009 - 2:02pm [Dine in]

This place is very small, and is easy to miss, but I am glad I found it. The food is a tad spicy for my taste, but otherwise very flavourful. Service is outstanding, credit to the owner/server. He really goes out of his way to make you feel welcome and appreciated. Definitely worth a second, third ... visit.

Once is enough
Submitted Thursday, July 9, 2009 - 1:52pm [Dine in]

I went for a dimsum lunch the other day. The dishes are mostly traditional, standard dumplings, buns, rice rolls ... etc., with very little creativity, and the quality isn't exceptional either. The ladies with the dimsum carts were pretty pleasant but a little pushy at times. Value is not the greatest, a bit pricy, actually. And at such price, you would think they can afford to hire someone to keep their bathrooms clean and in working order. Or at the very least, put a sign outside the stalls that need repairs.
