How much tofu can you eat in a meal?
Submitted Monday, February 14, 2011 - 9:16pm [Dine in]

I ordered a seafood hotpot. It had one shrimp, one little oyster, one egg and the rest of the bowl was filled with tofu. I do like tofu, and their tofu tasted great, but some variety and some more seafood would have been nice. Our other order seemed fine, though. So if I ever come back, I will stay away from tofu. Service was quite prompt. We were seated quickly, order taken and food came out reasonably fast, but everything was done without a word, without a smile, and without eye contact. There wasn't even an acknowledgement when we said "thank you". The whole dining experience was way too quiet and impersonal. Please work harder in the service department.

Solid value meal
Submitted Monday, December 6, 2010 - 4:26pm [Take-out]

This is a tiny fast food place, mostly for take out. There are a few small tables as well, if you prefer eat in. The food is prepared to order, fresh and hot, and in good portion sizes. The souvlaki, and everything else is very flavourful. Value is great and is a must-try for fans of Greek food.

Mediocre food, minimal service
Submitted Monday, December 6, 2010 - 11:34am [Dine in]

I used to enjoy Curry King, and that were quite a few years ago. The last couple of visits left me disappointed. It seems like neither the cooks nor the servers care any more. Two Sundays ago, we ordered a few baked dishes for lunch. All tasted the same and all were really tiny. The servers were inattentive, and seemed to have a hard time knowing who ordered what, and which table they were supposed to bring the food to. It's not likely I will be giving them a third chance anytime soon.

Forgetful Chef?
Submitted Monday, November 8, 2010 - 1:15pm [Dine in]

The seafood rice noodle soup I ordered was almost tasteless. The chef must have forgotten to put salt into it. Not only did he forget his salt, apparently he also forgot to take the seafood out of the pot when it was done. Everything was way overcooked. The only thing I liked about the soup was the bean sprouts :(:( Obviously pay $7-$8 for a small plate of bean sprouts isn't exactly what I call good value. It's not likely I will be back.

Love their tomato sauce
Submitted Thursday, October 14, 2010 - 2:07pm [Dine in]

I ordered a Penne del Pescatore and I love their tomato sauce. The calamari and prawns were done just right. Another minute and it would have been overcooked. The dessert menu, however, was kind of limited. Service was just OK; both the hostess and server were friendly enough, but service was very slow. They probably need to get another server and kitchen helper on a weekend evening. Ambiance wasn't the best; it was quite noisy with a lot of tables crammed into a rather small space, and the decor is kind of dated as well.

A recent visit
Submitted Wednesday, October 13, 2010 - 3:52pm [Dine in]

After my latest visit, I feel I need to revise my previous review. The food and service have definitely gone downhill from my visits a year ago. The servers seemed bored and unmotivated, perhaps because business has gone downhill as well? There was nobody else when we went there, yet food took a long time to come out. And it was mediocre at best. I couldn't help but wonder if they were trying to cut corners. The restaurant has really nice decor, and I hope they will improve. Please don't cut corners - it's no way to improve your business.

It depends ...
Submitted Monday, September 27, 2010 - 2:44pm [Dine in]

The name says Thai Garden, but the food doesn't taste very "Thai" to me. So if you're looking for authentic Thai food, this may not be the best place for you. But for me, who just wanted a tasty meal at a reasonable price, this place served the purpose last Friday. The servers, while not too chatty, were always nearby and easy to find if you needed anything. This is a place I will probably go back to if I am in the area again.

Nice and Clean, Good Beef Noodles
Submitted Friday, September 10, 2010 - 11:39am [Dine in]

I was there for a late lunch on a weekday, so did not experience any line-up. Their beef noodles looked very appetizing and tasted great. The texture was tender and the vegetables fresh. The prices are a little more than your average Taiwanese noodle restaurant, but the decor is much, much better, and I like the fact that they have an open kitchen so you can see what goes on there. Also, HST is already included in the price. If you take that into consideration, then they are not that much more expensive than other similar restaurants. It is definitely worth a second, third ... visit.

Solid performance
Submitted Friday, June 18, 2010 - 7:45pm [Dine in]

I have tried a few other Pantry Restaurants, and have had very similar experiences. Food is good, though not exceptional. They have a rather limited menu, but what they have there, they do well. I don't mind ordering the same items as long as they are reliably good. Service is also friendly and prompt. This particular Pantry is quite spacious, and I had a good time enjoying a nice and quiet dinner with my husband. Will visit again if we are in this part of town.

Submitted Friday, June 18, 2010 - 7:31pm [Dine in]

I passed by this restaurant quite a few times and finally got around to visiting it. I ordered a specialty crepe for lunch, with apple and granola filling. It was a little bit different from the average crepe from other restaurants, and I liked it. Service was pretty good too, polite and prompt. Their prices are quite fair for what they offer. I should go back and try their other menu items. Recommended for casual meals.

This is a friendly little place that serves all day breakfast, sandwiches, burgers, pasta, etc. I had their chicken fingers with a tossed salad for lunch last Friday. The ingredients were fresh and tasty. Service was not the promptest (it took a while to get our orders in), but was quite friendly and they did their quality checks a couple of times to make sure things were OK. All in all, it's a solid choice for a casual lunch.

Good pita bread, but ...
Submitted Thursday, April 29, 2010 - 2:03pm [Dine in]

I have meant to try this restaurant for a long time, and finally got around to it. Their side pita bread is very good, but I am afraid I can't say the same for the rest of the meal. I wish the chef had been easier on salt and let the taste of the food come out more. Service was pretty good, and so was the ambiance. Having said that, we were there for an early dinner and were seated on the side with fewer customers. Towards the end of our meal, when more customers came in, the room started to get quite noisy. I am not sure if I will be returning anytime soon.

Soggy Noodles Yuck
Submitted Sunday, April 11, 2010 - 8:57pm [Dine in]

We ordered two dishes for an early dinner last Monday. The curry chicken with rice was OK, but my rice noodles (lai fun) with three kinds of shredded meat was a total disappointment. It's one of my favourite noodle dishes, and is also a fairly easy dish to make, but it was bad. I have never had soggier noodles than what they serve at Ho Yuen.
Service was not the greatest either, and they were not even busy at that time. Ambiance was bright and clean. I have no complaint about that, except I can't help but wonder why the owner(?) should decide to have an oversized picture of himself by the door. Having said that, the picture was facing outside and did not affect the ambience inside the restaurant :):).

Does not live up to its name
Submitted Sunday, March 21, 2010 - 11:04pm [Dine in]

To set the record straight, they are not open 24/7 as their name suggests and as their large neon sign indicates. There is a small sign on the door that says they are open from 11 a.m. to 4 a.m.
The restaurant is small and the decor kind of old. It wasn't very clean either on my last visit. Service was polite and pretty efficient. I have no complaints about that. But I found the pineapple fried rice I ordered very salty, and mediocre at best. I have had much better pineapple fried rice elsewhere.

Submitted Tuesday, February 23, 2010 - 12:27pm [Dine in]

It was my first visit to Bowl of Stars, and I really like this place. The restaurant is quite small, but the decor and the way the tables are arranged makes it look spacious and comfortable. The glass wall is what I like best. It makes you feel like you are in a large sunroom.
They offer a variety of noodle and rice dishes. I enjoyed a bowl of Burmese rice noodle with fish balls in a ginger-flavoured broth. I will probably come back soon to try their other menu items. Service was not exceptional, but the servers were polite and efficient. All in all, it was an enjoyable lunch.

Really bad Pho
Submitted Tuesday, February 23, 2010 - 12:01pm [Dine in]

If a Vietnamese place doesn't do the basic soup noodle at least decently, it really shouldn't call itself a Vietnamese restaurant. It was a cold evening after a tiring day, and I was definitely not looking for a fine dining experience - just something decent and hot and quick. Unfortunately, Kim Son did not deliver. The meat and noodle in the soup was dry and comepletly tasteless. The broth itself had way too much MSG and nothing else. Even though I was pretty hungry when I sat down, and the portion size was on the small side, I had a hard time finishing the whole bowl because it was just so bad. Needless to say, I will not be back.

Good Wonton, Not-so-good Mein
Submitted Monday, February 22, 2010 - 5:50pm [Dine in]

When I come to a noodle place like this, I'd like to order their most basic wonton noodle soup. Any place that calls itself a "wonton" restaurant ought to have good wontons. Here, I was not disappointed. The wonton is very good. I especially like their soft and thin wonton wraps. It's also a good size. The noodle, however, is missing that crunchiness that is, IMHO, very important for this kind of noodle. Service was mediocre. They were obviously understaffed that day and it was hard to get the servers' attention.

Tiny and Interesting
Submitted Monday, February 15, 2010 - 4:51pm [Dine in]

This place is really small, and is more like a fast food place than a real sit-down restaurant. The food is pretty good and substantial for the price. I had the traditional beef soup noodles, and it was hot and nicely done. One thing I suggest for the owners, though, is that they place some kind of sign to indicate how to order and where to find the menus, etc. It can be a bit confusing for first time visitors.

Voted Best? By Whom?
Submitted Monday, February 8, 2010 - 12:02pm [Dine in]

If they were voted best, I definitely didn't cast my vote for them. While they may not be the worst in the area, they are certainly far from being the best. The beef dish I ordered had way too much meat tenderizer, an easy way to make an inferior cut more tender and palatable. But the taste of the tenderizer comes through, and it was not good. Service was just mediocre. They weren't rude or anything, but it was just hard to get their attention. It's unlikely that I will be back anytime soon.

Are we communicating?
Submitted Tuesday, January 26, 2010 - 2:47pm [Dine in]

The beef noodles soup was mediocre at best. The service was just bad - even by foodcourt standard. Normally, when you place an order at a foodcourt counter, there is some kind of acknowledgement, at least a nod. Here, there is no response at all from the other end. It was like talking to a wall, and you come back in a few minutes to find out if someone did actually hear what you ordered. After trying this place two times, I think I am done with this kind of suspense.
