carnivores come!
Submitted Monday, December 8, 2008 - 1:35am [Dine in]

a buddy of mine was telling me about how good this place was so he took me here and at the end of the night, i had to drag myself up those seemingly long flight of stairs out of the restaurant because i ate wayyyy too much meat.
they have almost every type of meat that vancouver could offer.. steak, hen, chicken, pork, ostrich, bison, and a bunch others so theres not shortage of variety there.. of course there is a salad bar as well to get that balance in the diet.
we had the all you can eat option which is more expensive than i thought but it is AYCE afterall so you basically have unlimited food for a fixed price, nothing wrong with that!
their service is quick, the waiters are coming around often with their stick of meat and making sure you always have something on your plate.. it does overwhelm when you are tempted to get more than your plate can hold
like the ambiance, always have music playing and a great fun atmosphere which enhances the dining experience if you are into that live and loud environment.
i would recommend this place in a second but if you do come and pick AYCE, come hungry and pace yourself because dont make the same mistake i did where i had to literally carry myself when the night was over

Steveston Pizza Co.3400 Moncton Street, #100, Richmond
arguably the best pizza around
Submitted Monday, December 8, 2008 - 1:14am [Dine in]

the pizzas here are awesome. period.
if you have not tried them, its a must!.. they stack it with so many toppings according to what you order and everything is fresh so the end result is something that lights up the taste buds.
the last pizza i had here was the caveman and again, they dont cheap out on the meat or cheese so the pizza was just loaded with toppings, love it!!!!!!
it is pricer compared to a dominos or a pizza hut which does hurt a little but on the other hand, those other pizza places are so stingy with their toppings which ends up balancing it
theres nothing really to the ambiance of this place, the inside looks old and beat up but who cares, its not made for dine-in purposes anyway
if you want a tasty pizza, come to this place.. just be prepared to spend a few more bucks than you normally would, doubt you will regret it though

Guu Original838 Thurlow St, Vancouver
not your typical japanese place
Submitted Monday, December 8, 2008 - 12:55am [Dine in]

if you want cali rolls or bc rolls, this place does not serve them but that doesnt mean its a bad thing either.
wanted to try something "different" so we came here when it opens at 5:30pm and we arrived a little earlier than that. surprisely, there was already a line up to get in and fortunately for us, we were one of the last couples to get through the door.
the menu is basically all tapa-based so my gf and i ordered a wide variety of dishes and with all honesty, everything tasted great.. their food is packed with flavor, i can see why people enjoy eating here so much!
our waitress was sweet but forgetful, she didnt remember to fill up our waters when we asked and didnt bring our bill when we wanted it but the fact that she was very polite made it easy to overlook those things..
the atmosphere is very loud, everyone is talking and not to mention how everytime a customer leaves, the staff perform some cheer in japanese... kinda entertaining at first but its overdone after 10 or so people leave the store.
no real complaints here, would certainly love to dine here again but i would wanna try the other Guu restaurants and see how this place compares with the others

wonderful place to relax
Submitted Monday, December 8, 2008 - 12:27am [Dine in]

a bunch of friends and i came here on a late weekday night and i was blown away by how cheap everything was and the quality of the food as well..
i ordered this deep fried chicken dish w/ rice and a bubble tea which were both very good, serving of the food was large and the price you pay is cheap... im craving that stuff right now just writing this review
service is average, our waitress was very sweet and polite but she wasnt around enough to ask whether we needed to order anything else or just to check on our status but its common for places like this.
overall, i would return for sure.. come for their bubble tea, and stay for their food!

delicious mexican food
Submitted Saturday, December 6, 2008 - 3:24pm [Dine in]

im a big fan of spanish food so i wanted to give this place a try and i was not disappointed the slightest bit.
my date and i had no idea what to order because this isnt your typical taco joint so we asked our waitress for her opinion and she gave us a description of the type of food they offer, she was extremely friendly and willing to help us make our decision.. she also took the time to get our feedback after we had some time to sample each dish, her service was excellent in every way!
you are paying relatively alot for the quantity of food that you receive however you can have to keep in mind that its all tapas so with that being said, the value is reasonable... im personally not used to eating such small servings for dinner but the food is worth it.
the ambiance is nice... very laid back and relaxed atmosphere thats not too loud, exactly the type of restaurant to take someone just to talk and chill, we ended up staying here more than 2 hours.
i would recommend this place to any one who is looking to mix things up and not stick to the norm... variety is the spice of life!

yummy hot dogs
Submitted Saturday, December 6, 2008 - 1:04pm [Dine in]

this stand is packed with people in the summer.. always a line-up!
the dogs are great especially their trademark terimayo hot dogs, so tasty and filled with flavor; they bring something unique to the food scene and perhaps thats why they are successful.
the service here is pleasant, they main cook is so polite to his customers and always has a smile on his face.. i can say the same thing about his assistant too.
you are paying nearly $5 per dog which is a little expensive but you forget its that much when you are chowing down.
cant really say too much about ambiance, it is a stand located on the sidewalk and thats it.
if you havent already tried their hot dogs, its a must.. gotta do it at least once and if you have, i bet you will be back for more.

hits the spot every time
Submitted Saturday, December 6, 2008 - 12:30pm [Dine in]

i am a regular customer at this pho and i always return back. its open late everyday so you can come here for a late night fix.
i usually order the #8 and i never get sick of it, noodles are hot, soup is good, and the beef tasty.. and they always give lots of beef which makes the meal that much better!
the service is absolutely terrible though... waitresses hardly speak any english, they take your order and you wont see them after that and just are not very polite at all.
in terms of value, $6 bucks for a bowl of pho noodles with beef.. cant go wrong with pricing like that!
i really believe this place is a hit or miss: you either fall into the group of people that hate it or love it, i am in the latter group so that is why im here basically once a week

Al Porto Ristorante321 Water Street, Vancouver
great selection of food
Submitted Saturday, December 6, 2008 - 11:51am [Dine in]

ate here a while back with some friends from out of the country and i remembered the food was simple yet satisfying... ordered the penne with sausage and thought it could have been better, both in terms of taste and quantity... could not really classify it as all that memorable but it did its job.
the service was great, our waitress was in our area either to check on our meals or to fill up our glasses with water so it was easy to find her when we needed her help with something.
the prices are very reasonable, they do not charge you an arm and a leg for solid italian food that you might have to pay elsewhere but the quantity of food you receive brings that aspect of it down.
love the ambiance in this place, makes you feel like you are in an authentic italian restaurant with the decor and layout, great job with that!
i would return to Al Porto, they have so much variety in their menu that i would like to try the other dishes, i am sure ill be coming here soon enough.

the food leaves you indifferent
Submitted Saturday, December 6, 2008 - 1:29am [Dine in]

i would always drive by this place so one day, i came here with my family to try it out, we all thought the food was mediocre.
the hokkien noodles and pad thai were not that tasty, sure it had flavoring but that doesnt necessarily mean it had taste, felt like the chef just threw on the standard ingredients, stirred a bit and slapped the food on the plate to serve..
service here was alright, nothing to complain about and nothing to compliment either.
the prices do not reflect the quality of the food and i mean that in a negative way, its not worth it... good asian food has always been known to literally have their customers wanting to come back and i can honestly say that i would not eat here again.
it was a good experience to try this restaurant for the first time but i would take my money elsewhere the next time i am craving asian cruisine

great place, great food
Submitted Saturday, December 6, 2008 - 1:13am [Dine in]

ive been here a couple times and ive enjoyed it both times..
first time i came was with a date and we were treated very nicely when we walked in, the service throughout the night was very prompt so we were pleased with the overall service which always makes the dinner more memorable.
i order the pork loin but it was wayyyyy too salty, i like my food a little salty sometimes but this was overboard, i asked the waiter what they do with it and apparently they marinate it the night before with salt and other ingredients and cook it again (with more salt probably), i ended up having to "return" the dish and the waiter substituted it with the steak frites.. this was much better and more to my liking!
second time i came, i brought family from out of town because they were craving seafood/fish and thought this place would fulfill that urge.. they ordered the artic char with this sweet spicy chilly sauce and they loved it! i ordered the steak frites again because thats what made up for my previous experience so i knew i couldnt go wrong... its always nice to bring guests and have them be content with the food, i was happy and so were they.
the prices are not through the roof. it is reasonable for what they have and for the quality of the meal so its a great place without having to pay high prices
i would come here again without a doubt, would probably try something different though and im sure i would enjoy it just as much... awesome place and would recommend to anyone who wants a great meal!

tasty burgers
Submitted Saturday, December 6, 2008 - 12:51am [Dine in]

came here once because a friend recommended the place to me.. i enjoyed the food, burgers were tasty but not worth the price they were charging for them
the service in that place is quite poor.. they take a long time to actually get to your table and ask for your order and on top of them, orders take a long time to complete, it is just a burger joint (i.e. fast food-ish) so how long does it actually take to make it when you have everything up and running.. also, the waiter i had was forgetful, i asked him to fill up my water and didnt showed up again except when he came back to give us the bill.
cool thing about this place is that they give you a complimentary onion (of course you have to like em; i dont but still thought it was cool)

great flavored gelato
Submitted Wednesday, December 3, 2008 - 10:47am [Dine in]

i love the gelato at this place, they use authentic original flavors which makes it taste great.. they've got a wide array of different flavors as well which always makes deciding harder!
service here is okay.. its usually just one staff on duty and if he or she is not behind the counter, they are somewhere in the back for a period of time so you just have to hope he or sh hears you come through the front door
what really kills this place is the value: $3.75 for a measly scoop which is ridiculous, mondo gelato gives two scoops for cheaper than that..
the room is lit well with a good number of seating for a gelato place so its not squished like most dessert joints
this place is good to try once, nice to take people from out of town to expose them to the many different flavors that it offers but other than that, not worth it to come here on a regular basis

solid lunch specials
Submitted Wednesday, December 3, 2008 - 10:33am [Dine in]

picked this place to go have lunch with some family and came across their lunch specials which were reasonably priced ($8 gives you a choice of chicken, beef or pork with a spring roll and rice)... ordered this spicy chicken with cashews which i thought was very tasty but the other green curry chicken was just normal, nothing that wowed my taste buds, the same went with the pad thai noodles that were bland.
their service was good, came by often to refill water and brought the food in a timely fashion (mainly because the place was not busy at all) but thats about it, no complaints there.
overall, worthwhile to check out because of the cheap lunch specials... especially in this part of vancouver where most of the restaurants are much more expensive so if you are a fan of thai food, definitely give it a go.

a neighborhood gem!
Submitted Tuesday, December 2, 2008 - 10:56pm [Dine in]

decided to eat here a few months back and found it quite pleasing! a little challenging to locate it because it is tucked away in a residential area where you wouldnt expect to find a restaurant like this.. its quite small and probably only fits 30 or so people without leaving much space from the person sitting beside you..
anyway, i had ordered the pollo arrosto and my date ordered the gnocchi.. we both loved our meals! i thought the chicken was cooked great, skin was crispy and taste while the meal was tender... the chicken itself was pretty big and not just a single drumstick.
our waiter was very polite and treated us with care, making sure throughout the evening that we were doing good with our meals that we had so the service was great
prices here are not outrageous by any means so one would not have to worry about taking a big chunk out of their wallet (or purse).
the place itself was cozy, really felt like an 'at home' environment which was nice.. the strange thing is that the only way to the washroom is to literally walk through the kitchen and see the staff cooking your meals, dont really know whether that is a good or bad thing.
if you havent been here yet, you have to at least try it once... its has a calm and laid back atmosphere where you can relax and enjoy your meal so why wouldnt someone want that?!

kitchen needs dire help
Submitted Tuesday, December 2, 2008 - 10:35pm [Dine in]

came here a couple months back to meet a friend for lunch and was expecting a good dining experience and it was the opposite.
we were hosted to our seats and it took a while for the server to finally come to our table and ask what we wanted so i just brushed that off and ordered a pizza while my guest had a pasta dish.
nearly 1 hour later, my lunch finally arrives while my guest's dish had arrived shortly before.. sure the server apologized once or twice before our meals had come but the length of time for them to make a simple pizza was absolutely unacceptable regardless of how busy the restaurant may have been.. when the pizza did arrive, i told them i would just rather have it to go so they packed it for me (my guest had finished her meal by that time)... they could tell i was pretty disgruntled as i made it very clear to my waitress so she gave us the meal on the house (that did little to change my opinion)
and it wasnt just me, the table to my left was having their company lunch and they were being quite vocal about the slow service and not surprisely, the table to my right which was a family and they complained about the same thing! both tables thought it was horrible and i couldnt have agreed more!
i really hope that the kitchen have fixed up their act because if they havent, one is better off buying a frozen pizza and cooking it at home!
i would not come back here again, the experience was so bad that it has completely turned me off from ever wanting to step foot in this place.

wonderful place with a gorgeous view
Submitted Tuesday, December 2, 2008 - 11:37am [Dine in]

was taken here for my birthday a while back and right when i walked into the restaurant, it had a gentle and calm atmosphere, the place was decorated so beautifully and it certainly enhanced the dining experience.. also, when you look out the window, you get a spectacular view of vancouver, wow.
our server was pleasant, she explained things well that we were not quite sure of on the menu and was very attentive to our needs the entire night so we left her a generous tip.
the food itself was great, it was cooked precisely the way we asked so we could not expect anything more.. as well, the prices are not outrageous either if thats a concern for customers
this is a great place to take someone special or just to celebrate a particular occasion. either way, i doubt you will be disappointed!

delicious chinese food
Submitted Tuesday, December 2, 2008 - 12:23am [Dine in]

everytime i come to this place, i have always left satisfied and content... this is definitely one of the better chinese restaurants in richmond with a great variety of dishes, it doesnt come cheap though so the prices can add up quickly.
the service is pretty solid, they have a relatively large number of staff during busy hours so you can expect to get good attention..
the ambiance is that of a typical chinese restaurant but much cleaner and more up to date..
also dined here for a wedding dinner once and i will never forget how awesome the food was!!!.. sharks fin, fish, abalone, the best of the best.. and it was yummy!
would strongly recommend to anyone whos looking for a relatively classy place to bring friends or family for a great oriental meal!

cheap lunch
Submitted Monday, December 1, 2008 - 10:27pm [Dine in]

this place has great deals for lunch, its $4.95 for about 6 different items; however you do have to order a drink to get that special price which basically raises the price back to its original amount... either way, its $7+ for lunch which is a good bang for your buck.
the quality of the food is okay, you get what you pay for.. again, its not fine dining so if you dont care and just wanna fill your stomach, this place works!
waitresses are attentive and constantly walking around to make sure glasses are full but it is a small place so it shouldnt be too hard to notice when customers are in need of a refill.
overall, great for a cheap fix (eats or drinks), prices are reasonable.. would go back mainly because of this

good seafood!
Submitted Monday, December 1, 2008 - 1:05pm [Dine in]

ive been to alot of seafood places and this place was alright.. i ordered the garry point which had prawns, halibut, shrimp and scallops. you could taste that the seafood was fresh so no complaints there! the only problem with this dish was that it came with this new orleans sauce which didnt have the texture of sauce at all... instead, it was very watered down and by the end of the meal, it wasnt pleasant anymore.
i thought the service could have been much better, the server did not come to us once the entire night to ask how our meal was and i personally believe it is a MUST when customers are paying nearly $30 an entree.
prices are cheaper relative to other seafood places (i.e. the ones downtown) that ive been to so that was a plus; however, the place needs new decorations and a few touch ups because the inside looks (and smells) old... maybe thats why its so dim in there to cover that part of it up
overall, decent.. would only go back if i had to but i wouldnt do so out of my own will

Submitted Sunday, November 30, 2008 - 11:59pm [Dine in]

came here with family and was expecting more flavours of gelato so i was a little disappointed with that... however, the ice cream was still solid and reasonablypriced ($3.75/two scoops)
the place was a little small.. when theres a line up, u can barely get through to check the other flavours but of course it is a dessert place afterall..
service itself was good... there was only one girl behind the counter and she was doing a good job with all the people wanting samples and making orders the same time.
overall, would recommend!
