Tropika1128 Robson Street, Vancouver
Overrated and Not Authentic
Submitted Wednesday, March 11, 2009 - 2:39pm [Dine in]

I've been to Tropika once and I left feeling underwhelmed. I went with a friend who is actually from Malaysia and he was appalled that the food here is considered "Malaysian." When we walked in, I though that the restaurant had pretty decent ambiance. We were seated and I realized that there were a lot of Chinese-Born Canadian (CBC) patrons (which I am one myself). Our waiter was also CBC and I knew that we were not going to get "authentic" Malaysian food.

We ordered the chicken, mee goreng, and roti. My friend was unimpressed by the chicken and roti and I thought it was sub-par. The mee goreng however was disgusting. It tasted like someone just fried up some noodles with watered down ketchup. Needless to say, I don't plan on going back to Tropika. If I wanted good Malaysian food, I'll go to Banana Leaf or Seri Malaysia... definitely not Tropika.

Expensive, overrated, and left little to be desired.

Sushiwa Japanese350 Nanaimo Street, Vancouver
Fabulous Little Restaurant
Submitted Monday, March 2, 2009 - 1:27pm [Dine in]

Last Saturday, a friend and I wanted some sushi nearby and I remembered seeing this new restaurant on the corner of Nanaimo and Hastings where a cafe used to be. Considering it was going to be a toss-up between Tentasu (another nearby sushi place which was sub-par), Toby's Teriyaki Bowl (which I really don't like) and this new place, I figured we didn't have much to lose.

Upon entering the restaurant, I have to say that it is rather small yet, the tables were sectioned off in a way that provided quite a bit of privacy. We decided to order the Party Tray A and were we happy we did. Party Tray A comes with an order of California roll, Yam Tempura roll, Kappa roll, Salmon roll, Tuna roll, Chicken Teriyaki roll, and Dynamite roll. For 45 pieces, it was only 19.95! And let me tell you, the sushi was delectable! Everything was fresh and the presentation was beautiful. I immediately fell in love with the sushi there.

I went back the following day with my boyfriend and we ordered the same thing along with an order of Tuna Tadaki and the Tuna Tadaki was simply divine. It was seared just perfectly and it tasted so fresh. Even my boyfriend who does not like raw sushi, enjoyed the Tuna Tadaki and that's saying a lot.

I really do hope this restaurant survives in our neighbourhood because it's a gem! I know I will be going back more frequently!
