Many happy Malaysians

Very excited to have found this place that so reminds me of home. Food was authentic and portions were a good size. Dishes that were especially true to taste were the sambal ikan billis, Ipoh Hor Fun, Char kueh teow, #8 veggies and malay kuih. Several others we tried like #1 veggies, satay and curry laksa were also very good; no poor choices to be made here.

Apparently the Ipoh noodles, roti and desserts are made in-house, all of which tasted deliciously homestyle. Overall, the food was fresh, flavours great, grease was well controlled and I won't hesitate to bring along critical Malaysian friends next time.

Opt for unusual next time

Place was packed with granolas and hipsters and after a 20 minute wait, granted it was lunchtime saturday, I had high expectations for the vegetarian menu. Service is not grand; you don't get so much as a nod from the one gal acting both host and waitress, that she sees a bunch of customers waiting there until she has a table. Though having a nice manner, she comes and goes during the meal without you realizing, which is just fine for the type of joint that it is.

Was recommended The Breakfast of free range eggs, side purple cabbage salad, beans, salsa, cornbread, and roasted yams/potatoes. It was as she said, simple. Simple can be satisfying...but not in this case. The cabbage salad was very simply, sliced cabbage, and the firm cornbread was not hugely inviting. All items on the plate taste better at home. Tofu-filled taco looked, smelled and tasted very healthy, not bad for vegan. Drinks looked great and organic coffee refills are aplenty.

A slightly disappointing rating as food is supposed to taste better when you're famished. But it was not so. I may be back, but probably at the request of friends, to try less generic breakfast items or different sauced enchiladas and other tacos.

Decor makes the food look interesting. Nice to include HST into menu prices. OK value overall.

a little homestyle

Several menu items...tried single tacos first, meat was flavourful and tender, despite probably being boiled during preparation and I omitted salsa etc. Also about 20 different combinations of taco filling ingredients; great for people who like selection. Certain items taste quite homemade, not bland, and tortillas are solid. Service is reflective of casual atmosphere. Musicians were great for the setting and deserving of tips, explaining the 4 stars for ambiance. Overall would be back again if I'm in the neigborhood and looking for a decent simple meal.

don't go fo de pho
Submitted Tuesday, December 16, 2008 - 4:19am [Dine in]

Chau's replaced a spot that previously served great pho, so I couldn't help but make the comparison. Chau's lemongrass chicken pho and curry pho were somewhat watered down but had tasty meat additions. If you're no pho fan, this should suit you fine.
Bigger checkmarks for tasty spring rolls and nem pork paper rolls, though they should've served paper ones first.
When ordering the curry pho, the server asked if we wanted prawn or chicken. A little misleading there when a skewer of suspiciously translucent, flavourless grilled prawns arrived and an extra $5 was tagged onto the bill. No big deal, but I do know where to get a bag of 300 bicarbonate soaked prawns for 5 bucks to enjoy at home too.
Service was polite and as efficient as 1 person could manage. The mains took awhile but tea was well topped during. And decor or lack there of was leaning toward bachelor pad. Good effort. May be back to try non-pho dishes.
