no msg claim questionable
Submitted Saturday, June 7, 2008 - 9:31pm [Dine in]

Food was very tasty, especially the sub. However, all of us who ate there had classic symptoms of msg afterwards (thirst, headache, red lips) so I'm not sure if they actually don't use any msg.

Service was slow. We didn't get tea until after having sat down for 10 minutes. Server didn't come by to take our order until almost 20 min. Food came out slow. We also didn't get everything we ordered.

The price is reasonable. The ambiance is quite nice: roomy, bright and clean.

Overall a decent dining experience, but I wouldn't come back on purpose because there's really nothing that spectacular to lure me back.

Visited here during Friday lunch hour, place was busy. Nonetheless, service was prompt, food came quickly. I had their Special Sub, ordered it spicy but it wasn't at all, other than that, the sub tasted very good. Companions had their Special Beef Noodle Soup, Veggie Combo (spring roll, grilled veggies, rice vermicelli), and an Avacado shake. All were reported to be tasty. Prices and portions were very reasonable. The place looks a bit run down and crowded. The bill comes with a bowl of fresh fruit (watermelon, cantaloupe, honey dew) for everyone at the table to share, which was nice and refreshing, especially on a hot day! Overall a great dining experience.

Ordered take out since this place is small. Had the Special chicken Karahi and the Nihari (beef). Everything, including the naan that it came with was definitely freshly made, saw them make it after I ordered it. Therefore, had to wait a while for the food. The chicken was really good, but the beef wasn't so good, wasn't spicy enough. Actually, the beef didn't really taste like anything. But it was very tender. The portions were a bit small. Nothing special to make me want to revisit this place on purpose. But then again, there was nothing bad that would make me want to avoid this place.

MSG overload
Submitted Sunday, May 11, 2008 - 12:02am [Dine in]

Had dinner here. Their set menus are pretty good value, includes dinner roll, soup and drink. Had the apple stuffed pork tenderloins, which was just small pieces of pork stuffed into a hollowed out apple. Looked pretty but tasted average. Friend had the tomato beef noodles. Beef was very very thinly sliced. Noodles were instant noodles and were soggy. After the meal, all of us were extremely thirsty. On the other hand, service was excellent. The place is spacious, clean and has a nice view.

Good Pho
Submitted Saturday, April 5, 2008 - 6:23pm [Dine in]

Food: Been searching for a place w/ good Vietnamese subs, came here on a friend's recommendation. Judging by how many people come just for their subs and seeing how many people came to pick up multiple take out sub orders, they must be tasty! Tried them, good but not great: not enough pickled veggies, sauce/seasoning/spices for my liking. On the other hand, loved their noodles: huge portion, texture just right (not mushy or sticky). They also have a variety of other Vietnamese (vermicelli noodles, salad rolls, lemon grass chicken), what they call "Asia Special" (Phnom Penh noodles) and HK style (noodle soups, milk tea, bubble fruit slush) dishes on their menu.
Service: We were seated and served tea quickly, but food came out somewhat slow. Place was very busy, always a line up, saw that they were clearing tables, seating and serving people as quick as possible. Server/owner was very polite and helpful. We actually came before but they sold out of their subs, so she suggested that we phone in to check and preorder (guess this happens often) and told us very nicely that we could come back another time (ie wouldn't mind if we just left). She also helped us pick from the menu. Heard her striking up friendly conversations with the other customers as well.
Ambiance: HK cafe diner style but small, tables closely packed. Place looks clean and bright. Washroom also clean (a bonus for an Asian restaurant in Richmond).
Overall good, cheap, casual dinning.

Good Happy Hour deals
Submitted Sunday, March 30, 2008 - 12:45am [Dine in]

Go there often during their "Happy Hour" (2:30-5:30pm and after 9pm) for their Happy Hour menu, which has almost everything from their normal menu but cheaper (mostly under $6) and includes a drink. Portions are still big enough to satisfy a normal appetite. I especially enjoy their chicken curry, beef pho, and buns (rice vermicelli). Their Vietnamese ham sandwich wasn't that good though: not enough pickled veggies, stale bread. They also have some good desserts like deep fried bananas with ice cream. Servers are efficient and polite but don't expect anything more than that. Place is clean and spacious. Overall good casual dinning.

Good Vietnamese subs
Submitted Saturday, March 22, 2008 - 5:04pm [Dine in]

Had the beef pho & sub combo, chose their Vietnamese ham sub (they also have chicken, beef and meatball subs), also had the lemon chicken w/ rice and a salad roll. Their pho and salad roll were average in price, portion and taste. Their sub was above average, very tasty compared to other Vietnamese restaurants around Richmond: Just the right about of meat, pickled veggies and sauce, bread was crusty and slighty chewy. The lemon chicken was disappointing. Although it tasted good, the portion was too small for the price and the chicken was mainly skin.
Place is small but very clean. Service was good. Menu is limited: Pho, subs, salad rolls, spring rolls, beef stew, chicken curry and French style coffee. None of the other usual Vietnamese food or drinks/desserts offered by most Vietnamese restaurants around. Would definitely recommend their subs.

below average dim sum
Submitted Monday, March 3, 2008 - 6:53pm [Dine in]

Went there 5 min before our reservation to get our table, still had to wait over 30 min for a table. Host/floor manager and servers did not apologize or anything, they were actually rude. Space is cramped in there. All the dim sum dishes were very oily/greasy, even compared to other Chinese dim sum places. Their portions are also smaller than other dim sum places. However, prices are higher here. Only the plate of E-fu noodles we ordered tasted good. The other good thing was that the place was clean and things looked relatively new. Overall not a good experience, would not return or recommend.

huge bellinis
Submitted Sunday, March 2, 2008 - 1:26pm [Dine in]

Went there for a birthday dinner on a Sat night. Place was busy but service was great! Our server had a good sense of humor and helped us with all our "surprise bday dinner" plans. Their bread was fresh and yummy, especially with their balsamic vinegar and olive oil dip. Food was good: our table had pasta, salmon, chicken, all were tasty, no complaints. We all had bellinis that came in really tall glasses, they have 3 "styles": sour puss, wine, regular. All were reported to be very good. Overall a great dinning experience. Only thing is parking is tough to find if you don't go for their valet.

good food at good prices
Submitted Friday, February 22, 2008 - 6:24pm [Dine in]

Owners of the old Moutai Restaurant on Westminster Hwy moved here and opened this restaurant. The menu is the same as before. Dan dan noodles still only $1.99. Where else can you get soup, huge bowl of rice, main dish, and drink for under $6 at lunch time and under $7 for dinner! Almost everything on their menu is under $6 and comes with a free drink. Things can be very greasy though...but they taste so good! Place is very small, limited seating, so may need to wait a while for a table during peak hours. Service is very quick though.

good late night deals
Submitted Friday, February 22, 2008 - 6:13pm [Dine in]

Their late night meals great deals. Good sized meal with drink for $8 (sometimes less) and that includes tax and tips. Most things taste ok, although I stick to the curries and baked rice/pasta items. The fried rice and noodles I find too greasy. Service isn't great but they are fast and efficient. Wish the place was a bit cleaner though.

good dinner combo
Submitted Friday, February 22, 2008 - 6:07pm [Dine in]

The dinner combo is a good deal: gado gado, bak kut teh, choice of curry (beef, pork or chicken) or steak with rice, veggies, and a drink for $13. Portions are reasonable. Tasted good. But everything else on their menu is over priced!

good egg tarts
Submitted Friday, February 22, 2008 - 6:04pm [Dine in]

They have the best egg tarts (dan tat)! Other stuff is average compared to other Chinese bakeries. I like their Black Forest Chocolate cake, has jello pieces instead of cherries in it though. And yes, the buns are all smaller but they're also a bit cheaper than most places, so it works out.

Submitted Friday, February 22, 2008 - 6:00pm [Dine in]

Food always taste good here. Beware if you can't handle spicy though as their stuff is hot! Can be a bit on the greasy side. I like all the things on their lunch menu, especially their laksa, prata, nasi goreng, char kway teow, Hokkien mee and black sticky rice dessert. Good sized portions. Place is clean and spacious. Service is great but can get slow at times.

not so good
Submitted Friday, February 22, 2008 - 5:52pm [Dine in]

Had the spicy Thai chicken fried rice. Experienced the same problems as previous reviewer: very oily, no chicken (only bits of skin), no taste. Tried their curry the other time, was a lot better tasting. I guess just order carefully... Price and service are average compared to other HK cafes. Place is clean.

push cart dim sum
Submitted Friday, February 22, 2008 - 5:47pm [Dine in]

Dim sum tastes good and reasonable price too (most of the items are $2.20 I think). Try their "lau sa bao", a steamed bun with eggy goodness inside! I like their tapioca pudding too. Don't expect great service though. And the place does seem a bit run-down and not exactly clean.

Very very good curry Hainanese chicken laksa! Big portion too for under $8. Service was ok but the waitress seemed kind of clueless/slow that day. The place is a bit small, seated very close to the next table. But would come back just for that laksa!

higher end HK cafe
Submitted Friday, February 22, 2008 - 5:37pm [Dine in]

Although more expensive than other HK cafes, the food did taste a bit better and the service is definitely above average compared to other HK cafes. Had a combo meal which came with dinner roll, soup, entree with choice of mashed potatoes, spaghetti or rice, dessert and hot drink for $15. The dessert was mango pudding this time, with real chunks of mango in it. I can only imagine it tasted better than the jello mentioned by previous reviewer. :p Probably won't go often though just because of the higher price.

good pasta
Submitted Friday, February 22, 2008 - 5:29pm [Dine in]

Went with a huge group of friends without reservations, staff was very accomadating since they were packed already and super busy. Service was great. All the pasta tasted very good. The ceasar salad and garlic bread that came with the pasta were also good. Portions were huge! Almost all of us had to doggie bag 1/2 our plates. Price is reasonable considering the big portion and quality of food.

ok DOV
Submitted Friday, February 22, 2008 - 5:24pm [Dine in]

Did DOV here last month. Salmon and steak were both dry and too salty. The sour dough bread and the firecracker shrimp was really good. Service was good but on the slow side. It does smell a little funny there though (very fishy).
