White Spot650 41st Avenue, #613A, Vancouver
slow service, bad food
Submitted Sunday, February 22, 2009 - 1:54pm [Dine in]

Food: had the Chicken Veronica salad. Salad came without any chicken. Mentioned to server who fixed this by giving me a seperate plate with what I can only call "shavings" of dried, flavourless chicken. Salad veggies did not taste fresh. Cashews had funny taste.

Service: on the slow side.

Value: didn't feel the salad was worth that much.

Ambiance: place feels crowded, kind of run-down.

Would not come back to this particular White Spot.

standard white spot lunch
Submitted Sunday, February 22, 2009 - 1:48pm [Dine in]

Food: Had the Spot Chicken Burger and Chipotle Chicken Wrap. Substitued sweet potato fries for one of the sides. Both burger and wrap were very good, chicken cooked just right (not too dry). Both normal fries and sweet potato fries were a bit soggy, so that was disappointing.

Service: Was fast. Came by to check things were ok.

Value: Average for this type of restaurant. The substituted sweet potato fries was a good, heaping portion.

Ambiance: Nice and clean. Has booths, tables, and bar seating. Also has wide screen TVs. A couple times during lunch though, there was an enormous amount of smoke coming out of the kitchen area, made the entire place smell like the grill, bbq smell. That wasn't too pleasant.

Overall, standard White Spot quality. Better than the other White Spot restaurants around that I've tried.

relaxing meal
Submitted Tuesday, February 17, 2009 - 9:52pm [Dine in]

Food: Had the lunch 3 course meal: spinach salad (simple and fresh, dressing was not overpowering), mahi mahi (a little bit dry but tasted good anyway), chocolate hazelnut galette (extremely sweet). Everything was presented very nicely.

Service: a bit on the slow side.

Value: I would only go during their 2-for-1 promo.

Ambiance: nice view, both of Granville Island and of the students making pastries.

solid AYCE
Submitted Tuesday, February 17, 2009 - 9:44pm [Dine in]

Food: was there for Sat lunch AYCE, food came out fast. The only big disappointments were the lemon chicken which had neither lemon or chicken (deep fried chicken had very thick batter coating and almost no chicken and was coated with some sort of yellowy syrup/sauce) and agedashi tofu (soggy). Short ribs were good but way to fatty. Actually, all items tend to be on the greasy side. Also, think they use a lot of MSG as we had MSG-overload symptoms afterwards.

Service: ok for AYCE, server came by periodically to ask if we wanted to order more.

Value: even though it's a little bit more expensive than some AYCE around Richmond, they have more choices, so it evens out.

Ambiance: spacious, probably not as clean as it can be.

nothing extraordinary but nothing bad
Submitted Tuesday, February 17, 2009 - 9:33pm [Dine in]

Food: Was there for DOV, had the smoked trout (kind of fishy and too salty), salmon (perfectly cooked), and chocolate dessert (weird w/ some sort of fruity and gingery taste, did not go well with the pear that was put on top).

Service: top notch, server explained each dish as it was served, no glasses were empty.

Value: portions and taste didn't really justify the cost, even if it was DOV pricing.

Ambiance: nice, clean, interesting layout/use of space

Overall it was a very good meal and dining experience but I wouldn't go out of my way to come back.

Tai Hing Congee and Noodle House8075 Park Road, Richmond
Chinese comfort food
Submitted Friday, December 12, 2008 - 3:46pm [Dine in]

Food: Had their congee and rice noodle roll combo. Congee is better than other Chinese congee/noodle places, especially compared to what you get from those Asian mall food courts. Congee here isn't runny or watery, and has a good amount of stuff in it (ie. sliced beef, chicken, preserved egg, pork etc). Rice noodle rolls are good (but then again, it would take a lot of effort to mess up something as simple as rice noodle rolls).

Service: For a Chinese restaurant in Richmond, this service is great. They acknowledge you, take your order, and thank you when you pay and leave. Food comes hot and fast (even if it's take-out).

Value: Huge bowl of congee with a plate of rice noodle rolls (or whatever side dish you pick ex. soya sauce fried noodle),
competitively priced: Cheaper than some HK cafes and even some food court places.

Ambiance: Dinning area looks clean. It's very quiet (to a point where it's a bit eerie) in there for some reason: no background music, and the patrons don't talk much.

Love to have a bowl of their congee is this cold, rainy weather. And perfect for battling/recovering from a cold (just like what my mom use to feed me whenever I got sick).

nostalgia
Submitted Saturday, November 22, 2008 - 12:56am [Dine in]

Food: Went for their brunch. Standard selection for a western buffet: lots of salads, soup, bread, corn bread, pasta, roasted potatoes, french toast, pancakes, sausages, fried and roasted chicken, ham, roast beef, soft serve ice cream, bread pudding, apple crumble, coffee, tea, pop. All were ok. Nothing was bad. It's as expected for buffet food.

Service: Self serve buffet but the waiters are very efficient at coming around to clean up plates.

Value: Very good. Don't find buffets that also include soft serve ice cream and beverages for that price anymore!

Ambiance: Definitely needs a renovation: some chairs and booths were torn.

All in all, I had a good time. Reminds me of when I was young when there were lots more Uncle Willy's around and my parents would take me for my birthday: kid + all you can eat soft serve ice cream! :) But it's like someone else said before, you have a good time while you're there but you may end up regretting eating all that greasy-spoon, not-that-high-quality food after.

sushi rolls for the carb-conscious
Submitted Saturday, November 22, 2008 - 12:46am [Dine in]

Food: Had one of their specialty rolls, rainbow wrap, which was prawn tempura, tuna, salmon, crab, tamago, massago wrapped with cucumber. Tasted good. The tuna and salmon tasted fresh. Prawn tempura was a bit soggy and stale though. Tamago was good. They have several other rolls that don't contain rice.

Service: I'm guessing it was the owner that was talking to me while I was waiting for my order. He was nice, made some suggestions on what to try next time I'm in. Made sure I knew what was in the rainbow wrap so that I wouldn't be getting something I didn't want.

Value: Average price for sushi places.

Ambiance: Place is very small and has a very strong fishy smell. Definitely more geared towards take-out.

ridiculously huge sushi rolls
Submitted Saturday, November 22, 2008 - 12:39am [Dine in]

Food: Had the house roll and spicy tuna roll. Tuna was a bit fishy (as in not that fresh). House roll was ok, nothing spectacular but not bad either.

Service: Had take-out. The lady taking my order seemed a bit out of it. Didn't notice me even when I stood right in front of her and tried to get her attention. Just took my order and money. No thank you or anything. But the food came out fast.

Value: As others have mentioned, the rolls are huge! So definitely a good value if quantity is what you're looking for. Can't say that much about the quality though.

Ambiance: The place looked clean but as I only ordered take-out, I can't really judge.

Good HK cafe style restaurant
Submitted Saturday, October 11, 2008 - 3:38pm [Dine in]

Food: Everyone raves about their curry so I tried their curry beef brisket with rice. It was good, had a nice coconut scent to it too, but I'm not sure I would say it's *the best* in Richmond.

Servce: Was really good. Way above average than other HK cafe style restaurants in Richmond. Servers actually acknowledge you and smile.

Value: Prices are comparable to other restaurants of this type, but portions are a bit smaller.

Ambiance: Place looks clean and brightly lit. Very spacious. Has booths and tables.

Be prepared to wait
Submitted Saturday, September 13, 2008 - 3:27pm [Dine in]

Food: Had a rice bowl (Bi Bim Bap), beef, sweet potato noodles stir fry, seafood pancake, and tofu hot pot. All tasted very good, not too oily or greasy, except for the pancake.

Service: Very very slow. Took 90 min to get 5 dishes!

Value: Had the choose 5 dishes (from a list of 25) for $20 menu. The portions were on the small side but still satisfied 3 average-appetite people.

Ambiance: Very spacious. Looks clean. Brightly lit. Nicely and appropriately decorated as a Korean restaurant.

below average
Submitted Thursday, August 28, 2008 - 9:26am [Dine in]

food: pho didn't have the taste or aroma that's expected from Vietnamese cuisine (missing some spices?! soup was oily. Salad roll ok but accompanying sauce was watery. Sub was good. 3 bean dessert drink was way too watery and sweet.

service: waited at door for long time before being showed to a table (place was not full). Did not receive a menu, even after asking, had to get our own. Food came out very slowly.

Value: Prices and portions are comparable to other Pho places.

Ambiance: table was sticky, as was the booth. Lots of flies and mosquitos flying around. Garbage smell gets worse as you walk closer to back entrance.

Will not be returning.

great service for AYCE
Submitted Monday, August 25, 2008 - 6:42pm [Dine in]

Food: was standard for AYCE. Liked the fact that their rolls and cones weren't overstuffed w/ rice like some other AYCE places.

Service: was great compared to other AYCE places. Staff actually smile and acknowledge you!

Value: prices are around the same as other AYCE places.

Ambiance: looks clean and new. The only thing bad is trying to find parking.

good but not THE best
Submitted Thursday, August 21, 2008 - 10:50am [Dine in]

Food: had the Mexican and 5th Element, found both a bit bland.
Service: very accurate with the ETA of your pizza.
Value: kind of expensive compared to other pizza places but they do use "better" toppings.
Ambiance: store is very tiny, place looks a bit greasy. But it's intended for take-out so it's all good.

Decent dinning in Steveston
Submitted Wednesday, August 20, 2008 - 5:36pm [Dine in]

Food: had the caprese salad with tomato and bococinni (sp?), salmon, and tiramisu. Everything had a oily, greasy feel to it so did not enjoy that aspect of the meal. The cheese in the salad was quite good. Salmon (besides having that oily film) was not overcooked or dry, tasted ok. Tiramisu came in a wine glass, did not taste like the mocha flavor tiramisu that I associate w/ tiramisu. Tasted more like a lemon cheese cake with some raspberry sauce on top.

Service: good considering the big group we were. Although I had to stand at the door for a good few minutes before anyone noticed me and showed me to our table.

Value: didn't pay so don't really know. Portions were good enough to feed a person with average appetite.

Ambiance: a little dark inside. Other than that, everything looked clean. Atmosphere just like any other Italian restaurant.

Nothing special
Submitted Wednesday, August 20, 2008 - 5:27pm [Dine in]

Food: had their lunch combo(x2), picked miso soup, sashimi salad, beef teriyaki, mango california roll, vancouver roll (=california roll topped w/ smoked salmon), udon. Everything tasted ok, nothing bad but nothing spectacular. Sashimi salad had too much dressing for my liking.

Service: was ok. Server took out orders, food came promptly. Only minor thing was there was 3 of us sharing everything but server didn't clue in to give us an extra bowl or plate.

Value: Portions are reasonable for the price (maybe a little on the small side), considering it's not AYCE. Use their coupon for free salmon sashimi, the 3 pieces were actually a decent size considering it's free, (i.e. not paper thin).

Ambiance: looks clean and new. Has a bar type area with a big LCD screen. Good for watching the Canucks come hockey season!

Great service for a Chinese restaurant
Submitted Wednesday, August 20, 2008 - 5:16pm [Dine in]

Food (had dinner): compared to other Chinese restaurants, food was not too greasy. Their freshly squeezed orange juice was really refreshing, can actually tell it's really squeezed from oranges, not mixed from concentrate. I also enjoyed their egg white dried scallop fried rice, not too salty or oily.

Service: definitely a lot better than most Chinese restaurants around. Our cups were consistently refilled (w/ juice, wine etc). Servers cleared plates promptly and were polite.

Value: didn't pay the bill, so don't know, assumed price was decent for the reasonable portion sizes and quality of food.

Ambiance: was clean, didn't look run-down. A typical Chinese seafood restaurant atmosphere.

Great place to have dinner with friends
Submitted Wednesday, August 20, 2008 - 5:09pm [Dine in]

Food: had the Ahi Tuna Salad, tasted good, especially the dressings that came with the salad. Shared a pitcher of bellini, it definitely had a kick! Friends also order salads, and wraps, all were reported good except for the fries which were a bit too salty.

Service: very attentive, but not to the point of being pushy or overbearing. Server made good jokes/conversations with us. The only thing was the sun was in our eyes and it took a while for them to help us fix th problem (moved to another table b/c for some reason, they couldn't fix the blinds or whatever)

Value: actually quite expensive for the portion and quality of food.

Ambiance: relaxed, trendy, comfortable. Just a great place to hang out and catch up with friends over a meal and drinks.

bland
Submitted Tuesday, August 5, 2008 - 9:35pm [Dine in]

Had their "Queen special" pho, vietnamese sub with chicken, and one of their combos which had shrimp, chicken skewer and salad roll. Also tried their 3 bean coconut milk drink. Everything was very very bland. The pho soup base was very greasy. Even the sauce for the salad roll was watery.
Service was very good, polite and attentive.
Prices are as expected for a Vietnamese restaurant.
Place looks clean, bright, spacious. Washrooms were clean.
Nothing special, probably won't be returning.

average gelato
Submitted Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - 11:27am [Dine in]

The mango-coconut was very good, didn't taste artificial or too sweet. The tiramisu was disappointing though, tasted just like very sweet coffee ice cream.

Service was great. Didn't get death stares when I asked to sample before ordering.

It's a bit expensive for the portion but I guess it is freshly made gelato as opposed frozen pre-made ice cream from the supermarket so it's justifiable.
