Wasn't what I expected
Submitted Saturday, August 2, 2008 - 11:21am [Dine in]

I visited this restaurant this weekend, finally catching it when it was open and not extremely busy. The place is a lot smaller than I had imagined, but cozy while very open (the chefs seem to like to socialize with every guest). The food was great - we ordered the 4 course meal with salad, miso soup, one their own signature sushi rolls, and sesame gelato for $35, which turned out to be a bit overpriced for the portions of the food, but the presentation and the taste made up for it. The service seemed to be very selective (I'm in my twenties, and the other guests seem to be quite a bit older or with families) and the chefs and the waitresses ignored us, even seemed to forget about us for a while, as we were clearly some of the youngest people there. Perhaps they have a very selective clientele and they prefer to stick to it, but my party of two was in no means obnoxious or comparatively loud, so it seemed we gave no reason to deserve the relatively and obviously prejudice treatment. Still, when we did get served by the waitresses they were extremely polite and friendly.
In all, I was highly disappointed by their service and pleasantly satisfied with their delicious meals, but I will have to give this place another shot. Or maybe not.

Overpriced + overrated

This place seems so welcoming and is constantly busy with customers, so I tried it this last weekend and it was way too expensive for the value of the meal. Quite frankly, I left feeling disappointed and kind of sick from the meal. I ordered the Golden Turkey Melt which was made from regular, cheap ingredients (slice of cheddar cheese melted over tomatoes, regular cream cheese, lunch turkey meat, red pepper... and pickled beans?) - but priced at $9.50. Not worth it! I can make my own bagel for half the price, better ingredients, and 10x the satisfaction.

A favourite comfort place

Like being served in someone's home, the decor and menu at this place is neither genius nor stunning, but always welcoming and comfortable. I've always been a sucker for great soup-sandwich-salad places, and this has got to be one of my favourites.
Although line ups to be seated can take a while, and their service a bit slow, the servers are generally friendly and professional. Plus the wait is always worth the food. I believe they change their menu every season, so I will be frequenting here for as long as I live in the area. Plus, with Vancouver's infamous winter weather, this place is a staple during the colder seasons.

It just works.

I came here for my birthday earlier this year with a small group and the food was incredible. The famous mussels didn't let us down, the appetizers were a treat, and everyone was satisfied. Our waiter was professional but not exactly friendly - understandable, they're busy. The decor is just right - not over done, small and intimate, yet trendy in the most appropriate way. I will be returning soon for a 2nd round!

High hopes fulfilled

I had heard so much about this place and when I finally visited the restaurant a few weeks ago I was pleasantly surprised. The seating is a bit awkward, as we were the only ones seated in the middle of the minimalist-design room (which felt more like a walkway through the restaurant) while all the other restaurant customers sat in booths. Other than that, the service was great, the food incredible and enjoyably creative. I will definitely be returning to this place!

fun place to go, but...

I like the location of this Cactus Club, but their service is always extremely slow despite how busy the servers are, as if they have a staff shortage. The food's good, just don't go if you're extremely hungry because expect to wait for a while. This place is fun if you're there to spend time with friends over drinks.

typical northwestern restaurant

Nothing special (similar to Earl's or Cactus Club), Joey's has pretty decent food and drinks. The one thing that always amazes me about this place, though, is the service; the servers and hostesses at the front are so polite! Plus their desserts are pretty good...

pretty decor, but food's only ok

I thought the actual restaurant itself has excellent presentation, and I love the interior decor and arrangement. However, the food is only ok.. they sound great on the menu, but not as great when you actually taste it.. and for this, I think they're also slightly overpriced.

My newfound obsession for sweet coconut curries and rice was satisfied with their chicken curry (don't quite remember the name) and their coconut rice! I had heard so many things about this restaurant, so when I finally went, I was pleasantly surprised that it was as good as I imagined, and the staff here are friendly too -- but yes, they are slightly overpriced.

GREAT! I love it here, the chef seems to get pretty creative with the fusion pairings...and they're so yum!! if you can, try all the appys on their menu. Yaletown needed a restaurant like this, and I'll be coming back to this restaurant very soon.

pretty good, but didn't live up to its hype

I had heard so many fantastic things about this restaurant, but when I finally had the chance to check this place out, it didn't meet my expectations. The food was great, but not exceptional or anything surprising. The decor, meh. I thought it was slightly tacky, to be honest.. but i'll give it to them that our server was well-mannered and friendly, and the view is always a bonus.
