Calling Public House, The1780 Davie Street, Vancouver
Just "ok"
Submitted Monday, December 6, 2010 - 4:48pm [Dine in]

For some reason, unless its for drinks, I find the food & service to be just mediocre.
Even from before Donnelly group bought it out, its always never achieved anything else then just "ok".
The views are great, the TV's and bar are wonderful.........actually to be honest, if you want better service, sit at the bar.........as for the food, i dont know why it never is very good, its just ok, plain jane food.

Popped in there at about 9:30pm on a Tuesday and most places would be at the end of their evening, and wouldnt have given the service or food we got........not at this place.
Went really simple and ordered a stine of german beer, mussells and frites.
Beer........mmm good!
Mussells and Frites, could not have been better!
So tastey, so good, and the service is so underrated!!!

There's not much I can say but that its the best place in the city and one of my fave restaurant's of all time. The food is to die for (try the low-tide special 3-6 everyday, 1.50 a shuck), the drinks are great (never ever has there ever been a Ceasar thats as good as Rodney's...not cheap, but worth it), the service is best and if you can sit at the bar, you get the best experience!!!! Love this place! Rodneys's rules!!!!

Kettle of Fish, A900 Pacific Street, Vancouver
Good, but could have been better....
Submitted Tuesday, November 13, 2007 - 5:23pm [Dine in]

My only problem other then I think Kettle of Fish needs to update some aspects of their restaurant that look to be about 20 years old is that some of their dishes need a little bit more taste. Now i'm not one to use much if any Salt, but between the two dishes (kettle of fish soup & the Boullebaise) there was barely any other taste then fish stock and what seemed to be a tomatoe mix). I found the taste a little bland and needed to pepper/salt to make it explode in my mouth. No complaints, nice place, great service, but those two dishes need a little spice of some kind to make them taste good.

Good Food, Slow Service, Nice Room!
Submitted Friday, January 26, 2007 - 12:24pm [Dine in]

This is a tough one, the food was good, actually really good on some accounts. I had the Risotto and yum yum, but I now have heard they've taken off the menu.......... :( The drink list without a doubt is great, love to see a place with a nice huge list of mixtures to make your head wobble! Here's where its gets a little negative........our service was so/so, not horrible in anyway, but not great. It took essentially 45 minutes for each plate to come out, and I'm not exagerating. We arrived, and sure I like to have a couple drinks, and relax, but we were there to eat dinner not sit around wondering when our next plate will come out. Litterally took 45 minutes to bring out a couple of salads and soup from the moment we arrived. Same problem with the entrees and by the time we had ordered the desert we had to ask twice to please bring out the desert so we could be on our way. So the end all is this, nice place, the food was good, but dont try and stall on the food to make a table drink or wait.

All I can say is: GOOD MUSIC, GOOD BEER, GOOD EAST COAST FOOD................GOOD TIMES. Bring a dozen of your friends, drink a lot, eat some food and have a hell of a time! The staff rock and the music is always good and loud.

Service Was Top Notch
Submitted Thursday, December 14, 2006 - 5:30pm [Dine in]

With the exception of some tapas being a bit over-priced for the amount you get, everything else was very good. The one thing i noticed that was the best was our server. I havent been to a restaurant in a long time that had a server that would actually bring food and drinks in minutes, barely even waiting for either, well the food of course we had to wait for it to cook, but other then that, man she was quick!
Very nice place that is a little older, a little bit more traditional inside but has good food, great service and the clientele was a mix of all vancouverites!
Try the meatballs!

Well most of my review is solid i'll give HY"s an outstanding just cause its a hell of a lot different then any other place I could have chosen. Was thinking of Bin 941, Lucy Mae Browns, Elixir, Gotham, and the list goes on, but at the end, you dont get as traditional as HY"s. Felt very old skool tonite and went for the all around good ol fashioned steak with HY"s. The service was good and could have been a little better, but hell the server was like 65........and knew the steak/wines like the back of his hands. The ambience was very interesting with the chef cooking steaks in front of you. And the food it self was good/great. My only problem was that it could have been a little bit better.......just a little for the price..........but damn it was "GOOD". i WOULD recommend it anytime, anyplace...............HY"s is to say the least.......GOOD! Next time I'll probably try Morton's or Gotham just to see the difference, but at the end of the day.......the Bread was delicious, the soup.....amazing, the salad.....good, and the steak...........well the steak was top notch. I will say as a side note..........the outside of the building is so disceaving....looks so old/medieval........really cool actually. It was actually fun to go somewhere "old skool" with that type of traditional fare then the regular "new skool" restaurants.

Bad Bar!
Submitted Sunday, December 4, 2005 - 2:08pm [Dine in]

Wow JJ, you must really dislike that place with two bad reviews. I didnt hate it that much, but giving it low scores because it is really a nothing special bar. The food and drinks were bad.......yes, i'll agree. Not even up to "pub food" standards. The service was below average and the place itself could be renovated. Plus what is with the peanuts all over the place, wasnt that big in the early nineties???
THUMBS DOWN FOR ME!
