The Best

The best bakery in town. Amazing pastries and scones for breakfast, excellent bread and the only place in town where I will buy a cake - the St Honore is a fave. The large which serves 16 is only $28! Staff are always helpful and fast. Laura, the manager I think, recognizes people and is always smiling. If you are there at end of day they will likely have 2 for 1 on breads and pastries so you now they never sell day old. Fantastic place!

Not up to snuff

Went to Fuel last Sunday night with a group of 9. It took 10 minutes before we were offered a drink...let me rephrase, it was 10 minutes before we finally flagged down the server (room was not busy) and asked if we could order a drink. The server had no personality and spoke so quietly that you could barely hear her. Celebration salad was nothing to celebrate-elsewhere would be $8-9, here it is $13 - just mixed greens and a bit if cheese. The bread served was 2 thin slices of baguette per person. The mains were hit and miss as well-the veal was very tasty but that was pretty much all that was on the plate. The steak was undercooked and no seasoning, and the arugula was just on the plate, wasn't dressed or anything. The frites were good. Every bite of steak was full of gristle so I scraped the bearnaise off and could see that my steak was 1/2 fat, not marbled but the whole middle of the steak was one big chunk of fat. When the server was clearing the plates (she never returned to check) she asked if I was "still working on it". I told it that it wasn't very good and was 1/2 fat. Her response was "Oh." That's it. No pepper or salt on the table but we asked for it for the appetizers and had to ask again for the mains. When they bring the food they stand at the end of the table and announce to the table what is on your plate. Stupid idea and we couldn't hear what the server was saying anyway. They added the 18% grat to the bill for our convenience - $140 to quiet girl. In Montreal the night before we went to a great place, fantastic room, great, engaging service and delicious food in larger portions and it was $35 less per person. Has Vancouver gotten too big for it's britches and we are also supposed to believe the hype?? I'm not buying it and won't be buying here again.

Went for dinner before a show recently. We had the small table by the bar and restroon. Not a big deal but one of the seats is like an individual booth - fine except there was crap all over the wall. Overall the place was in need of a good scrub. Service was pleasant but vacant - everything we asked for (water, pepper, etc) was delivered quickly and with a smile but why did we have to ask?? Food on the other hand was very good from start to finish. Who ever is running the back needs to shake up the gang out front as they are not representing very well. And turn up the lights a bit. As I said, we went before a show so it was still light out but the restaurant was so dark we had to hold the candle up to the menu to read it. Won't rush back but will keep it in mind for pre-show dinner.

Took 4 people from my office for lunch. Service was pleasant but brutally slow. Also, if you are not going to have any explanation or description on your menu then your servers better know what they are talking about. Took 15 min to get a server to take our order, another 10 before we got wine and at the 1 1/4 hour mark, still no lunch. Food was cold and bland - steak sandwich was meat, bread and cold fries - for $20. Lobster club was mayo, white bun (not fresh), bacon and lettuce - again $20. Chopped salad was lettuce, chick peas, onion and bean sprouts???What?? That isn't a chopped salad. Chef needs to completely rethink lunch menu. Overpriced and underdelivering. Manager handled complaint well when we brought it up but would have expected a more proactive approach. Invited us back for lunch but really, we don't have the time.......
