Hamada Japanese Restaurant22529 Lougheed Hwy, #200, Maple Ridge
Best Rolls in Town
Submitted Monday, April 25, 2011 - 3:18pm [Dine in]

If you want good, basic sushi in Maple Ridge then Hamada is the place to go. I always order a california roll and I am never disappointed. It is on the larger side compared to others, is not overloaded with rice, and is sprinkled with black sesame seeds. Their rolls are definitely a good value for the price. The dressing on their garden salad is amazing. I think it is a mixture of apple sauce and vinegar, something like that. Their bento boxes are a good deal during the lunch hour. The servers and chefs are friendly and welcoming, which makes for an intimate dinning experience. There are always lots of people getting take out, especially during the evening. Sometimes, the staff looks a little rushed, and will quickly take your oder and give you your food. The music could be better in order to appeal to a wider variety of customers.

Good & Simple Homecooked Food

I have been to this small restaurant many times since it has opened, which must have been around 2007. Their menu is quite large. I usually order a sandwich or a wrap. I would recommend the gyro wrap, which is similar to a donair, without all the grease, the turkey club wrap, and the chicken caesar wrap. Their caesar salads are very fresh and delicious. My dad really enjoys their split pea and ham soup, while I prefer the potato bacon, however the soups change from day to day so you can't always expect the same one. Their apple pie is also a nice treat.

The service is always great, and you can see the chef preparing the meals in the open kitchen. There are many windows to let the natural light fall in, however sometimes it makes the place feel a little cold. There are tables to sit at or a small bar next to the barista. It is on the corner of two fairly busy streets, but the noise never seems to be a distraction. You can even see the tips of golden ears from a few tables.

In all the food is simple and of good quality. I like to think of it as mastering the basics. The price is reasonable for most meals, although I do wish the wraps came with a side salad or a small soup for an extra sum. Therefore, the sandwiches are probably the best deal.

Napoletana Pizza2576 Arbutus Street, Vancouver
Great Local Pizza
Submitted Monday, April 25, 2011 - 2:47pm [Take-out]

I recently went to Napoletana Pizza for take out dinner. We ordered a large pizza, half BBQ chicken and the other half was Tropical, and a greek salad. The BBQ chicken pizza was my favorite. It had lots of BBQ sauce, chicken, caramelized onions, and mozzarella and cheddar cheese. The Tropical pizza had ham, pineapple, tropical sauce and the same combination of cheeses as the other. The crusts were perfect, not too thick and not too thin. It was baked to perfection, with no burnt or hard crusts, so the dough was not dry. The pizzas were not too greasy, which I usually find to be thing that makes or breaks the dish, as I do like my food to be relatively healthy. The greek salad was a nice side dish. The vegetables were fresh, and the dressing, which was authentic, was left in a separate container so that we could add it ourselves.

The restaurant was a family run business, with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. There was a large TV to watch while dining or waiting for you order. Inside, you can see the whole kitchen and how the pizza is made, so you know what you are getting. Our meal in total cost just under $20, a large pizza and a Greek salad. I though this price was reasonable for the value of the food.

I would highly recommend this pizza restaurant if you are close to West 4th and Arbutus, and I look forward to my next visit.
