You can always count on St James

This place is fantastic for a "quick" bite and drink with close friends. The pub fare is decent and we always leave full. However, every single time we go, it's insanely packed, so another place with a long wait. I'd recommend the pie and soup - delicious! The fancy booze isn't cheap, but can't go wrong on the beer! =)

Great Neighborhood Pub

Visited St. James' Well for dinner and was happy we did. Nice Irish Pub ambiance. The place was clean and well kept. Lots of TV's all over for watching sports. Nice neighborhood spot in Newport Village

Nice atmosphere with lots of locals from Port Moody. Fairly busy on a Monday night (probably due to Monday Night Football). The service was prompt and attentive. Great drink specials and the food was typical Pub fare but tasty and a good value for the price... We will be back for sure...

Went for lunch...

... amd it was very good. Nicely-done "ye olde Irish pub". Clean, tidy, and interesting.

The Other half and I searched it out for a Saturday lunch, based on reviews here. The OH ordered (on tap) Keith's Red Amber, and I ordered (on tap) Kilkenny. The OH had the Jameson Irish whiskey chicken with gammon-style ham and mushroom, with "mash". I tried to order steak and frites, but was told that they recommended "medium rare" Back to the good ole steak sandwich on a garlic'd slice of french bread, "melted" onions and fries.

The OH pronounced the chicken breast excellent, the gammon & mushrooms were very tasty. The "mash" was from a mix, too bad. The steak sandwich was excellent, perfectly grilled. The fries tasted like frozen, and were not such a success.

Service....hmmm. Young things busy chatting with other young things. Service was NOT very "connected", and the young things spent most of their time at the bar.

The room is very nice, very "olde Irish". The W/C was very clean.

There seemed to be a "vibe" missing. Maybe we were there too early on a Saturday. They have live music in the evening, might be a more upbeat place then...

For a pub, this establishment has a superb menu with outstanding food. The burger is not to be missed. Service and ambiance are above average. All in all, this is a superior eatery at which libations can be had as well if one is so inclined.

As a resident of Newport Village, St. James’s has become a regular place to have great food and a great time. The place is packed on Friday and Saturday nights with a friendly, up-beat crowd. I have also dined at St. James’s for lunch on several occasions. The food is fantastic, the service solid, prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere typical of an Irish pub. It's a great place to bring family, go for drinks with friends, or begin your Saturday night. No complaints here...I love it!

Good Drink, Good Fare

The pub can get a little crowded during peak hours and seating gets limited. The overall ambience is that of your typical Irish style pub. Lots of knick knacks all over and comfortable feeling.
They have a good variety of liquor and beer options (I never took at look at their wine list) and the draft I had was fresh and tasty.
I have tried their poutine and it was fairly good. I have also had their Guiness steak pie and its excellent! great crust and definitely has that sharp Guiness flavour to it. As I haven't found any other restaurants near by that serve a decent meat pie I will continue visiting St. James' Well for this item!
Overall I have a good time each visit and would recommend it to anyone looking for a lunch / dinner and drinks.

Lively Irish Pub

St. James's Well is tucked away rather well in Port Moody, but is almost always packed in the evenings. Not many places serve real English pub food, so this place is a treat.

Food: Pub food is pub food, but you can give some authentic English/Irish good (liver and onions), for better or worse :) It's greasy, and probably not too healthy, but it is filling and tastes good. Drinks are obviously abundant.

Service: Funny how the best service we've received was when the restaurant was packed. If you go for lunch, it tends to be a bit slower. Recovering from hangovers, ladies? Still, it's up to par.

Value: Adequate value for the dollar. Average prices.

Ambiance: No Irish music nor bar brawls when we've been there, but it's one of the few BUSY bars I've been to where I've not felt overwhelmed or annoyed by the noise. The atmosphere is very lively and upbeat. The place has the usual trinkets and decor which mimics an Irish pub.

Overall: A good pub for drinks or a good place to get some real pub food. Bangers and Mash was a winner.

My new local hang-out?

Stopped in with the better half for dinner and a beverage one night recently. Wasn't too busy, but there was a good mix of young and old there, which I like. The cute young Sarah Palin look-a-like waitress was great, went and checked out a certain beer for us when she couldn't answer our questions about it, and was the right degree of attentive throughout the night.

We shared the Yorkshire Steak Bites that were quite tasty, although seemed to have been nuked to reheat them, they were still very good. My partner had the Bangers and Mash which they really enjoyed, and I had a special 6oz. Steak Sandwich that was fabulous, and came with fries for less than $10. Wow.

Glasses of wine were a little too pricey for a pub in my opinion (over $8 plus tax for a fairly cheap selection).

As for ambience, well, it's a pub but was clean enough although a little dark. Being new to the area, I'll definately go back.

A good place to have some drinks with friends and good food too!

My fiance and I went here on the weekend to celebrate my birthday with friends. The only bad part of our experience was that when we showed up and told them we had reservations for 15 people, no one knew what I was talking about, even though I spoke to one of the managers on the phone. But within 10 minutes we had our "reserved section". All of my friends came from Vancouver and Burnaby and were very happy with the portion and quality of food. Everything was very good. Yhe mushroom caps are HUGE! Our server always made sure everyone had enough drinks and that we were well taken care of. There is a patio at this pub so if you like to sit outside you definately could. Overall, a great place to meet some friends for some drinks and good food.

Great Food and only getting better

Have been to this place many times and have always enjoyed myself. I found it to be very busy on Fridays and Saturdays so go early. There is also a live bandon these nights and it gets very loud and can be uncomfortable due to the small space.
Service is great and the food is wonderful. Nachos are huge!! Most portion sizes are good value and have a good range of choices. Would recommend the St.James burger and have yet to find a better place for martinis!
I think there are many local regulars as I have seen many servers greet them on a first name basis, which is always a good sign.
Will continue to come here for not only the booze but the food and friendly casual atmosphere.

Great little Pub

This place is great to meet up with friends over a pint of brew and wind down the evening. - Really nice Ambiance with a lot of woodwork giving it an old school irish pub type of feel.

The food menu is a pretty standard pub offering - everything that I have tried has been good - with no bad standouts. However, I have really had good service everytime I've come which, along with a nice beer selection, is the reason why one goes to a pub.

I give it two thumbs up.

New Chef and New Menu

Been watching this place lately. They hired a new chef (formerly Exec Chef at the old TeaHouse and also Sous Chef at CinCin) a few months ago. I understand the have the goal to make the pub a gastropub over the next few month. They have just put up a new menu. Very nice! Great ambiance and service too.

"Our" Pub
By LadyQ of Coquitlam (12 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, November 26, 2012 - 1:30pm [Dine in]

Husband and I are relatively new to Port Moody and we like to have "our" pub so the search began. This place is great! The full time servers are fantastic. I think they have part time servers on Sundays because that's the only time we aren't given impecable service - still decent but not amazing.
We like to stop here on the way home from the office and we are always seated right away and our servers offer more drinks before we've gotten to the bottoms of our glasses. The service is great!
Husband and I are both impressed that we can actually get proper black and tans here as well as black and golds and crown floats. These are basically layered beers and they're hard to find!
The food is almost always excellent. I'm not crazy about the lamb sliders but that's because I don't like lamb lol. Their nachos are amazing as is the Steak and Guiness pie and the turkey brie sandwich.
They do have a few TV sets here but they aren't obtrusive so you can watch a game without being bombarded by it.

Neat hang out place

Ya, it's always crowded. You'll need to bring id with you sometimes when they're too crowded.

Love the atmosphere. The live easy listening singing. The soothing lighting.

Food is good but don't expect to have a full dinner meal like a restaurant since it can be a bit pricy.

Oh, they don't have yam fries.

Burgers are always a safe choice though.

Drinks are good. Had an appletini there, pretty tasty!

Will go back and try something new next time.

Stiving for excellence

As a resident of Newport Village for 6 years I have been going to this pub regularly, and I find the management & staff outstanding & willing to give the extra 1% to make the experience fantastic. Since hiring a new chef a few months ago they have introduced 2 new menus, which has taken this pub's food to a new level. Mike, as manager, is always around seen gretting customers by name, and making sure things are running smoothly.
On the Sunday evening of the last long wekend I was coming back from Pitt Meadows with friends for dinner. We got caught in the Pitt Bridge trafic & I realized the kitchen would be closed by the time we arrived. I called ahead, placed our order to go in at 10pm. We arrived to a reserved tabele, with dinner already orderd.
That is going the extra mile !
