I had heard that the Sunday buffet was very good at the S Restaurant. I invited friends from Richmond, Surrey and North Vancouver to join me. I was pleased with the look of the restaurant and the way the food was set up. It really was a great first impression. The food was good although there was no one around the buffet to slice the prime rib or tell us what some of the dishes were. We were frustrated with most of the service we received. With only 3 or 4 other tables with patrons we were surprised that our dirty dishes weren't picked up faster and at times we had to put them on the empty table behind us. Not really what you would expect for such a fine looking restaurant with great food on a slow day. We also had to wait for cream for our coffee after asking a few times and by the time we got it the coffee was cold. The restaurant was very slow so there was no reason for the delay. Too bad.
First time at this restaurant.
Server/host were attentive and eager to please.
Mussels were very good.
Reasonable wine list.
Wife's Cod was a little too salty; my steak was undercooked but still very tasty. Sides were a tad boring.
However, perhaps I have spent too much time reading reviews and actually think I have talent as a critic...I do not!
We will be back to try different dishes.
Everything was great!
The service was exceptional. The waiter had been there only 3 weeks and he was good.
The food and the way it was presented was fantastic.
Prices are in line with any other fine dining resturant. The atmosphere is very nice. It is also very clean.
They have brunch on Sundays and they also have an outdoor patio.
I would definetly recommend this resturant.
We walked in and sat down to eat. I felt unsafe. I had some guy leering at me the entire time.
When my husband got up to go to the washroom the guy made a b-line for our table.
He was a member of the staff!!!
He asked if he could refill my water and touched my shoulder. I thought maybe he was just being friendly until he commented on my perfume and dress and touched my hand that was resting on the table.
My husband came back and the guy couldn't have left quicker.
Our food arrived, finally! Cold and overcooked! Like leather! He could not cut through his steak and I could hardly even eat MY cold food as my stomach was turning from the male staff member.
On top of it all..we had to pay $$$$ for a very unsatisfying experience!!!
If you dare go into this establishment, bring your own food and a can of mace!!!!
Outside the place looks like a strip joint with neon lines and the letter S. Inside there is some wood door features but once you go into the dining area, it's just painted walls, carpets I think, cushion chairs and cotton table cloths. I've seen a piano there but not sure if they still have it. Having the windows clean at sunset takes so little effort but the can't seem to clue in. The food quality is average.
The service is friendly but not trained very well.
I would recommend going somewhere nicer with a view and more open interiors if you're going to spend that much on dinner.
Before I write my review, I read (well skimmed thru) the comments below. I find that many of the comments are 2 ends. Either very good or very bad. So I don't know whether my comment of my one time visit will be helpful.
Anyway, so my frd and I went to S last Sunday. Before we went, my coworker told me that S is got great fancy look outside but inside ain't that great. But both of us thought she was wrong. We thought the decor is way better than the look of outside. It's quite big and quiet since there was only about 1-2 tables inside. The service was good and attentive. We didn't want to expect a lot whenever we try new restaurants.
So we had seafood chowder which was better than we expected. It's got a lot of seafood inside and the portion is fairly big. The bread with Italian style Balsamic vinegar+olive oil was nice. My entree (seafood linguinne) was pretty good, tasty and not bland. My partner's new york was a bit disappointing though. We could tell that the meat was not a good quality steak and we asked for medium rare but it came out pretty cooked and a bit chewy. Their mashed potato was quite different than other places, they got we believed it was yam and potato. Not bad. But the other orange looking thing on the side of the steak was weird. Not so tasty.
The dessert we had was bailey something brule, nicely presented and tasty :)
The bill came out and it was about $75 including tips and tax. We didn't order any wine. It's a bit pricy in our opinion since the steak was $30 and wasn't even good. The seafood linguine was $20 but can have sth else better with that price. The bailey brule was $8 and it was tasty so it was okay.
We would still go back with bunch of frds since they have place for big groups. But go back for the food? Maybe if the price ain't that high. Or at least the quality goes higher.
My boyfriend and I decided to give "S" a try for our Valentines dinner 2009. This was our first time there since we usually go into the Vancouver core for fine dining. The ambience and decor are tasteful and it as a warm and inviting feel, though too many tables are located too closely to the washrooms, the kitchen, and the bar somewhat ruining the fine dining experience. We were not advised, when making our reservations by telephone, of any Valentine's set menu and were very disappointed to be told once seated. The set menu price was $65 dollars and this did NOT include wine. The house salad was the smallest I've ever seen as was my boyfriends seafood chowder. Both were fairly tasty so we thought perhaps we would have a good experience locally. We were very very wrong. My boyfriend had the rib eye steak and I the rack of lamb. The steak was a quick flash fry of about 1/4" of an inch thick and overcooked. The lamb was terribly overseasoned and raw. We had both ordered our meat medium-rare. My boyfriend advised the server that his steak was overcooked to which she replied that unfortunately with it being overcooked there was nothing she could do about it. If it had been undercooked then she could have had it fixed. I was APPALLED to say the least. $65 dollars per meal and they have bar room uneducated servers. The lamb was horribly oversalted as was the whole meal. It came with anorexic asparagus and a couple of peices of peppers and zucchini. The potatoes were skinless mashed with Yams which was not stated on the menu and my boyfriend despises Yams. The deserts were costco quality and the one chocolate covered strawberry had been refrigerated for so long that the chocolate came off when you tried to take a bite. All in all if you're interested in setting your money on fire then by all means have a meal at this overpriced establishment. It's a five star building serving 2 star meals with dollar store ingredients. If you value your hard earned cash then pass this horrible place by and drop on by Charlie's cafe. Better yet....head into the city for great ingredients, amazing chefs, knowledgable serving staff and great value. "S" stands for STOP don't go in here!
We celibrated my husbands 50th Birthday at S Restaurant on Jan 31st. We had a table reserved for 12 and it was to be a surprise, none of us had been to the restaurant and WOW!!! what a nice surprise. The minute we stepped into the restaurant the staff were amazing! They took us to our table and everyone yelled SURPRISE! and my husband was totally surprised! We were very impressed with the ambiance, it was very elegant and comfortable, love the earth tone colors and the lighting was perfect. The service and food were amazing, everyone was sooo impressed with the presentation of their meal, and the food was amazing, there was not even one complaint about anyone's dinner, I have to say that when I order a steak, I'm usually a little dissapointed because I like my steak, medium, but it usually comes a little too rare for me, I have to say wow again, my steak was perfect, PINK, just the way I like it! We will definately go back. My sister is already planning to go to S Restaurant for her husbands b-day in April! Thankyou S Restaurant for a wonderful evening, my family is still talking about our evening!! We will be back!
I went into S to find that not only was the food way below the standard of my last visit but the sweet lady Bartender with the amazing Serving talents had moved on. I was served cold appetizers and a badly mixed Martini of which had a awful aftertaste! My whole experience this time was rushed and sad to say I will not be going back! All I can say is that if you'd like a waste of time and money.....This place is for you! Hopefully I can find where My Bartender went off to. Wherever it is you can bet that there are happy customers! Bad move S!
09.01.11 Decided to try this place once again after a mediocre first go around. Ordered appies from the restaurant menu (we were seated in the lounge), and a couple of glasses of wine. The server was also the bartender. A couple of notes: one of the wine glasses served to us was chipped quite badly, but replaced quickly once brought to their attention. The serving utensils came wrapped in a (very dirty) linen napkin, again replaced once brought to their attention. The two appetizers we ordered: mussels and calamari. The calamari was served grilled, but it was inedible as half of it was undercooked and the entire dish was cold to lukewarm, the calamari was served on an insipid (and limp) small amount of greens. We assumed it was supposed to be warm to hot, but the server wasn't sure either. The mussels appeared to have been cooked in the microwave, with the tomato broth tasting more like minestrone soup. All in all, very disappointing. The service was the only thing that saved the meal - he was very pleasant, very apologetic, and comp'd us one of the appetizers and a glass of wine. I can't say that I'd return again to this restaurant.
I was with a party a little while ago at S and found that it's staff and food have dramatically improved! The portions are larger and the desserts are heavenly! We were served by a knowledgeable waiter who seemed to really care about the service he was giving. I liked the Seafood they have to offer and the beef dishes were really delicious. I will be back for my Birthday next month! Thanks S!
I've been making my rounds here and I've got to add the Gem of Port Moody to my run. I was in the Neighborhood on Friday night with a friend and saw that S had reopened and renovations were complete. I was normally seated in the Restaurant side by the Fireplace but I was out of luck as that seat was not available. Actually there was no seat available in the dining room at all and I was lead into the lounge which I was a bit questionable about since I prefer to be waited on in the dining room by the servers.
First let me say that the food at this place is under-rated as is the efforts of the owners to rejuvenate it. They have some great cocktails and the prime rib is succulent! Our dining experience on Friday was interesting! I had the Boullibaisse and my friend had the Prime Rib on my suggestion which came to our tiny table looking as good as it tasted. We were served by one of the two Bartenders who was juggling mixing drinks with serving us and I was quite impressed with the multitask ability that was demonstrated. As busy as it was the pair behind the bar managed to get our food to us with great Cosmos to boot! My Gf had a Dessert Cocktail that she was raving over and wouldn't share so I ordered one too......Amazing!
I like the whole menu here really but pass on the orzo! The mashed potatoes are great but there needs to be more of them! Baked potatoes come with all the topping you can think of. I like all of the options when you order the Prime Rib! You can add Sauces, Mushrooms, Spices etc and if you wanted could ordered a different variation of beef Every night. Gotta love that!
The wine Selection is good! If you a fan of Pinot Grigio then try the Casa Viniccola Bennati which I order even with red meat. I love the dessert menu which has an incredible Wild Berry Crumble baked to order! I will go back to say Hi again very soon! I just wish I could remember the name of that Martini!
I visited "S" on Tuesday evening, 28 October 2008. I had initially wished to try it for the first time as I saw on their online menu that they were supposed to have had a 24 oz. Porterhouse steak. When I got to the restaurant I was the ONLY diner in the restaurant although there were a few patrons in the lounge. There was NO Porterhouse steak on the restaurant menu and the totally clueless waitress had no knowledge about it or the online menu. Can you say, "FALSE ADVERTISING???!"
Unfortunately, I then made the mistake of staying and ordering the mussels, the "west coast" chowder, a salad and the "prime rib."
The chowder tasted like cream soup; there was no hint of chowder about it. The mussels were passable but were far too few in number (approximately one-third of the amount available at Rosa's Cucina Italiana which is just around the corner). The salad was OK (how do you ruin a salad??!). But the prime rib, the entree, was absolutely terrible. It was not fresh and tasted like a microwaved piece of meat days old. It was easily the worst prime rib I have ever had, worse than the cheapest buffets in Las Vegas. Compared to the generally excellent prime rib at, say, the Keg, it ranked one out of ten. Even worse, the dimwitted waitress brought the smaller of the two prime rib portions when I had ordered the larger. No matter, why eat more of a terrible prime rib?
This restaurant clearly makes a pretense of the fine dining experience and undoubtedly will not survive long. I understand it is a reincarnation of a joint called Sultri which apparently did not survive and neither will this joint.
An utter waste of money and needless to say I will not be back. Better to wait an hour to get into Rosa's which as I said is just around the corner and is always packed to the rafters . . . and for good reason. It is excellent whereas "S" is a dump. Stupid name, too.
Unfortunately this Port Moody resident has been sadly disappointed on this reincarnation of Sultry. On 3 occasions now we have been subjected to horrible service from under trained young staff that seem ambivalent and apathetic. On the latest occasion we demanded to see a manager and were told that our underachieving server was on one of her first shifts and so he was not surprised t hear our concerns! This is not acceptable especially given the $$$ prices they are charging out in Port Moody. They have significant ongoing financial troubles we were told stemming from the collapse of Sultry on the same location and it looks like this restaurant too will go the way of the dodo. Very sad considering we out here NEED very much to gain some quality dining choices. Go into Vancouver, you will be glad you did.
Prices are too high to support this market. If I want to pay this much i will go to boat house for the atmosphere or go downtown.
Service is NOT on par for the price, nice girl but she had no clue what she was doing.
When Sultri died I thought this would be different, its merely a renaming of the same thing - as a result, they will probably last as long.
This is my new favorite restaurant, after having eaten here five times in the last few months. The ambiance is lovely - sophisticated, calm, relaxing (though they do need to work on the background music a bit!). Great decor. Feels like you're downtown. Service is unobtrusive but attentive. Great menu with lovely options. Highly recommend the spinach salad with goat cheese, kamasutra skewers, salmon with mango salsa (perfectly cooked & presented), and the mocha brule. Have had consistently excellent food and presentation. Met Steve, the chef tonight. Will definitely be back - many times!!
This was our first time out to "S" Restaurant and we were very much looking forward to it as it is close to our home and a step up from the other local restaurants. The decor is wonderful with a modern classy feel that makes you feel "downtown". The menu was moderate with the typical selection but fairly pricey. At the end we agreed the appetizers were a bit high in price but the entree's were worth it. My rack of lamb ($34) was amazing and my husband really enjoyed his steak. The service was ok, we were the first ones in the door at 6:15 on a Friday and had to wait too long for our entrees. There were many staff milling around but we only had one server and still had to pour our own bottled water all night. I found our server just slightly annoying as she kept interrupting us with "sorry for interrupting but...." When I am out at a fine dining restaurnat I expect everything to be taken care of without even noticing the server, it can be done. I had hoped for a restaurant trying to make it's mark they were going to go over the top with service and extras (tasters compliments of the chef etc). We went in with high expectations and I would say they didn't quite meet them but we will go again and really hope they work out some of the kinks (no espresso machine?)
We visited S on Thursday July 18 2008 on the recommendation of friends; we owe them big time! A party of three, we had Artic Char, Prime Rib and Planked Salmon. All three dishes were fantastically presented and finely prepared! Topped with a reasonably priced bottle of wine, the evening was an event, not merely dinner! The food, quite frankly, is on par with Cioppinos and Blue Water Cafe, without the drive. What a find!
We dined here with another couple Friday July 4th, 2008. The other couple had eaten at this location before although the restaurant had a different name. They commented 'if the food is as good as the last restaurant, we will enjoy it'. The hostess told us the food would be better. Well, the food was awesome! I had a superb seafood pasta, my wife a rib steak. Both were outstanding. Our guests were equally impressed with their meals. The desserts were to die for! All the staff at the restaurant were making sure that our meal, as well as our visit, would be one to remember. Both were, and we will be back! Nice job!!
This area of lower mainland lacks fine dining restaurants, so this newly opened one will fill a gap. Well located with good parking, it is attractively decorated with enjoyable background music and art.
The food, service and value for money was very good. The menu was also well above average but not "too, too".
