Rosa's is an Italian restaurant in Port Moody offering home-cooked Italian dishes.
And as dinner progressed, the table of 3 I was at had become quiet. Each of us was taking our first bite of the pasta dishes we ordered. I had the lasagna and was at first quite surprised by how much grease was floating on top. Was the meat not drained well, or perhaps the cheeses used were more oily? Anyway, it's nothing I'm used to - and I've eaten at some of the finest Italian restaurants in North America and in Italy. I'm not denying love went into the recipes, but it was poorly executed.
One dish was a seafood white sauce canneloni I believe. This did NOT disappoint the guest who ordered it, and he did take it home with him. I tried a bit and found it was acceptable in that the seafood was fresh, but the sauce didn't do it any favours... neither did the doughey, sticky pasta which was overcooked and starchy.
We were startled by the bill, which is why I gave the "Value" a "1 - Poor". There was no value here. It was a packed restaurant... maybe the lasagna just isn't the dish to get? Anyways, I've had much better for far less. The salad was wonderful but became one of the only positive things I can reflect on during our visit to Rosa's. Rosa's came highly recommended by a sales associate at a store nearby. If their bread was fresh and hot, as it should be from an Italian restaurant, I'd go back and have their salad if they're open for lunch I guess... but I'd need to check to see if I'd be able to afford it from this spot!
My husband and I went here with another couple this past Friday night based on a recommendation from a family member. We got there at about 7:30pm and were prepared to wait because of what the person who recommended it said, I had also read the reviews on here in advance. We waited about 45 minutes but we decided to stay because of the lovely smells wafting out the door, and we figured all these people must lineup for something good.
Once we got our table the service was great, we were offered drinks within the first five minutes, I asked about the specials because I heard about the ribs which of course are not on the menu, they were in fact on special. We took some time deciding but two people ordered ribs and spaghetti, one ordered veal picatta, I ordered ravioli and meatballs and we split some salads to start. We didn't wait long for the salads and they were fabulous, I had tomato & onion which is a personal favorite and I believe hard to accomplish as it is so simple but it was lovely! There was some wait between our first course and the entree but definitely well worth it, even welcomed as portions were large so it was nice to space out the meal. The meatballs were melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The ribs smelled and looked amazing, and there was not an uneaten rib left on the table. This was pure comfort food, I know I'm going to crave it again soon.
The ambience is a cozy family restaurant, it is very small and there is a wait to get in but it is SO worth it. Definitely a place to go with close friends and family, take your time and have an enjoyable meal. I didn't really know what we were getting into after reading the past reviews but I'm glad I looked past them and gave it a chance. As for Rosa, she served us the whole time, she was very friendly and cracked some funny jokes. There were two birthdays while we were there and for both of them the whole restaurant chimed in and sang "happy birthday".
To end a fantastic meal we all split a piece of strawberry cheesecake and tiramisu, they were both great but I highly reccommend the cheesecake, it was so light and fluffy, like no other cheesecake I've had.
I can't wait to return soon :)
Just had a terrific dinner with friends who had been before and suggested we head there together.
Now I can see why waiting in the rain might get old quickly but sometimes you have to get wet if you want to have fun.
The four of us had a terrific evening with meals perfectly prepared, very nice wine, good chatter with service and attention that seemed right onetime and full of life.
The room was filled with voice and laughter through our entire visit. The service is covered by a friendly and very knowledgable team of..... 2!.....who hustle and have fun delivering great fresh made Italian foods in some eye popping proportions. Ribs were fantastic, canellonni was big and stuffed full of delicious, raviol so good and so big 2 or 3 people would be fed in many other restaurants.
If you want a secluded table with quiet instrumental music, linen table cloths with accented matching napkins and 30 servers Quietly shuffling around this is not your place.
If you want to have a great meal with friends and enjoy the energy and feel of others sharing food old family style then grab an umbrella and be ready to wait outside. But once you get a little wet you'll get a spot inside and it will be all worth it.
After the most horrific experience at Papa Joe's, we decided to give Rosa Cucina a try. The fate of many restaurants on Hastings is either: they flop within 6 months of opening, they do really well, or they stick around for a long time.
I think Rosa's Cucina is the last-named. I'm sure they do well on some days, but unfortunately I never see a large crowd in here.
We went on a weeknight and aside of us, only another table of 2 and a table of 6 were there. It's a good thing for the diner because it's quiet and peaceful and you get the attentive service, but I sure hope they do enough business to keep them around.
The 2 pastas we ordered were of good size. They were both very tasty and I could tell the quality was much better than that at Anton's down the street.
The service was great. Very attentive and friendly. The ambiance was also just as great. The name is so fitting as the restaurant is just that - Rosa Cucina. Very comfortable and homey with an semi-outdoor courtyard for private parties. I think we need more restaurants like this around.
Our bill for 2 entrees and a half litre of red came to only $30 including tax and tip (the 2 for 1 coupon really helped!).
The title says it all! The food is great the service at times can be slow but look how busy they are, the pricing is great for the amount of food you get! holy cow! The wait is defiantly worth it! It is just awesome if you are going with a family or a date! A little taste of ITALIA!
I love the food at Mama Rosa's Its great and huge portions. Staff can be rude or slow but I still enjoy the food. Good job!!! I especially love the clams in tomatoe sauce and the ribs are good if they have them. The veal is lovely and the fresh vegtables are to die for and the lasagna is scrumpeous. The tiramisu is so incredible that I never feel guilty when I order it. Rosa has always been great to our family and she loves kids! MIne always get a special treat and we arent celebraties. I just love going, its a great adventure and a wonderful time each time we go
After hearing alot about Rosa's through reviews and media we were excited to go and see what the buzz was about.
What a colossol waste of time! We were expecting Rosa to be a stereotypical loud, warm and engaging lady and instead found the extreme opposite. We felt unwelcomed especially compared to some of the "regulars". We also expected excellent food at fantastic prices and found the prices not cheap (although portions are large) and the food to be okay. The wine we had by the bottle was dreadful and were ripped off on our bill which we didn't realize until after ($78 for 2 pasta specials which were not seafood based, 1 apple juice and 1 $28 bottle of wine). We will definitely never go back and the fact that people stand in line in the rain just amazes me. It just goes to show the lack of good restaurants in the tri-cities area. I have been in the restaurant industry for 15 years and rarely has an experience been so far from the hype.
This is for you if you want 'Italian home cookin' with piles of fresh noodles covered with a bland sauce of your choice.
This is basics writ large. If you are looking for fine Italian dining with all its miracles, THIS is NOT the place for you.
Rosa and her daughter are quite personable once they get an occasional moment from their (too) busy serving tasks.
Waiting in the street for 45 minutes and an equally long wait for the food at the table discourages me from returning. The ability to make reservations is needed.
The atmosphere is great, but the food just OK.
Check out the 'movie star's' picture on the way to the loo...he visited the place...
This little restaurant is adoreable! Me and my friends have frequented this restaurant since our first visit. The food is excellent. Homestyle italian food with huge portions, easily one of the best cream sauces I've ever had. The servers are charismatic and friendly, and the owner is the nicest woman you'll ever meet. The pictures all over the walls signed to Rosa add to the ambiance, it's a very homey place. Remember to come early though, it's tiny and popular (for good reasons) and seats are hard to come across!
My wife and I are one of the first customers to grace the entrance of this little Italian gem in Port Moody some 4 years back. Much to my surprise, it was Rosa that recognized me from when she was working at Nick’s in Vancouver (The woman has a great memory). Then were the days when there were no line-ups, I think that lasted for about two weeks, now … you’re lucky if your wait time is less then 30 minutes.
I would say we dine there on an average of 8 times per year. The pasta and various sauces are fantastic and the salads, FRESH is the best description I can come up with. Be sure to listen to their specials, as there seems to be an ingredient that you don’t fine in a lot of other and more expensive bistros, it’s called Care. If the ribs are on … I recommend you go for them as the sauces is fantastic.
Salads, Pasta, Tiramisu and a bottle of wine, two can dine very well for $75.00. Quality food, large portions and great value.
If you know the owner and she likes you it would seem you can do no wrong and she will do all she can to make your night.
But as for new faces like ours it was different.
The water glasses were never filled unless you asked.
The food was ok but for the price and the time it took to wait out side.
The bread was old and the pasta was just getting cold when we got it.
When we go out to a restaurant and pay the same price for our dinner on a Friday night I would like the save service and quality. Not the cold shoulder and food. Thank you
Our neighbours turned us on to this little place about a year ago and I think we've been there 10 times already. It's a perfect cozy place with plenty of character(s). Everyone seems to know Rosa and she seems to know everyone. You feel very much at home after your first visit.
It's so nice to have a place to go where you don't feel like your always getting ripped of. Her prices are very fair, she doesn't jack the price of the wine into the stratosphere and her martinis are awesome.
The food is fabulous and the portions are huge. We always have our leftovers the next night for dinner. Check out the ribs that aren't on the menu.
Very highly recommended but if your not the first few people there, be prepared to wait outside. Or go a little later like after 8:30 and then the line ups are usually over.
We love this place.
I go to Rosa's quite regularly and I think the pasta is fantastic. I am a chef myself and have been in the industry for a while. Although the food is amazing the service aspect has been lacking for me every time and the last time She was flat out rude. Service is slow and un attentive and the care of small details eg. cutlery sets are placed carelessly on the tables is just not there. I'll still go back but just for the food.
