Formerly Empire Greek Taverna, Sparta offers authentic Greek cuisine for dine in, take out and delivery.
I used to come to this place years ago and it was really dirty so I stopped. Came last week with partner and child. It has been decluttered and cleaned up - good sign. On a Friday night there were about 5 tables being used - not such a good sign.
The souvlakis were both good, prawn and chicken. Came with a thimble of tzatziki and they charged a dollar for each extra thimble. NOt impressed. The rice was boring and the potatoes were not real greek lemon potatoes just mushy roast potatoes. Pita was good but portions all around skimpy. The greek salad dressing is the best around though. At $18.95 each for souvlaki I thought it was downtown prices for burbs quality and atmosphere. The kids meal was atrocious with a small serving of spaghetti with tomato sauce well over $6 and then $3 for a drink and no dessert. Way below quality and standard price for most kids meals at higher quality restaurants. All in all so so. Would go again if someone else is paying.
This place was great as Empire Pizza. You always wonder how these Greek cluttery restaurants are cleaned but I turned a blind eye. I was here a few years ago and remember liking it. The pizzas is just like I remember as a kid, thick crust cheesy pizzas froma pizza/steak/lobster joint. They still looked good.
The issue is the Greek food. I always have a spanikopita platter at a Greek joint. This one was good, but the spanikpita was so tiny. At $7.95 for an appetizer I would have felt ripped off. However, to turn the same portion into a "platter" by adding 1 pice of bread, a thimble of tzatziki and cheap rice and potatoes and then adding $9 to the $7.95 is Outrageous highway robbery. Especially in this location. Poco's fine but this place has no view except another pizza place across the street. $16.95! then add tip and HST, I'm sorry I felt Hosed. Lower your prices or you'll be gone.
Port Coquitlam seems to have a plethora of excellent Greek eateries, first Pallas Athena and now Sparta Greek Taverna!
I dined here this evening and had the Greek salad, garlic prawns, Boston clam chowder (yes, I know, the quintessential Greek dish!) and roast lamb. All the dishes were excellent with the roast lamb being the best. It was perfectly cooked, well seasoned and most tender.
Service was good for the most part although I had to wait seven minutes to be noticed at the entrance before someone showed me to my seat.
The ambiance was appropriate for an establishment of the Greek persuasion.
Value was very good with the whole meal plus tip coming in at under $70.
Parking is on the street and I had to turn around to access an appropriate parking spot in front of Me 'n Ed's Pizza joint on the opposite side of the street. Otherwise, no problem.
If I were to compare this eatery to Pallas Athena I would give the edge to Pallas Athena. The food is just a little bit better but the ambiance and service are clearly superior there. Still, this is a creditable establishment and I would not hesitate to return.
I was very surprised to see such negative reviews from other people. I have picked up take out from here a few times, and it's soon yummy. Especially the Greek salad dressing!!!!! I had the chicken souvlaki every time, so I cannot comment on other dishes. But it's really juicy and delicious.
Nice environment, very clean looking. Service was prompt and friendly. I had the roast lamb. The Greek salad came first which was nice but bland. The vegetables were fresh and nice but with very little seasoning. The lamb was tender but again with not spiced up enough for me. The spanakapita was very good as well as saganaki. The wine list seamed overpriced for the wines offered. Prices were quite reasonable. Worth a try though.
I've been to Sparta several times now and have always enjoyed my meal. If you like roast Lamb, this is the place for you. The portion is big, and the roast is tender and very flavourful. Their calamari is also excellent.
I find their portions are great and the service is wonderful. I live in Richmond but it's well worth the drive for a great Greek meal!
They have *the* best Lamb Shoulder Roast in the region. And it doesn't seem to be a one-off thing, I am hooked on their lamb take-outs after trying several times with same incredible results.
Same with their souvlaki. The bread, salad, and cheese always taste fresh and delicious. If you find the prices expensive, do a take-out and eat in the cozy confines of your home, saving tips/gas etc.
This is not a place for the touchy-feely, sensitive clients who are picky on service, aroma, noise, and other environmental attributes. If you are a foody, and value good greek food, this place is simply the best, at least east of Burnaby. Believe me, I have tried them all. The only place that comes close is the My Greek Taverna on Brunette.
Though the menu is a tad pricey....the food more than makes up for it. The portion sizes are huge and the food is fresh! They have an excellent home-made salad dressing and fresh food. Great lamb and spanekopita and who can go to Greek without some flaming Saganaki?
We love to go there on special occasions.
We ordered Pasta and 2 apetizer. Received half the appy's and plain pasta. They offered to deliver the other half which was received 25 mins later........ no real excuse or anything. Kitchen manager came over the phone and said it wasn't the driver's fault and that it would be there soon. Next time San Remo it is or boston pizza or dinaky's or chinese.
The absolute best calamari I have EVER had. the spanakopita appy is a generous size piece cut in half for presentation and served with delicious tzatziki, $7.95 is certainly reasonable for an appy. If you want more order the platter for 9 bucks more it is loaded with lots of good stuff that will fill most; I personally can't finish it all. The greek lamb is succulent and there are always a tantalizing list of daily specials to please any pallette. If you go there with your little girl be sure to order her a shirley temple, my little girl swears theirs is the best. There is a childrens menu so the whole family will leave feeling satisfied. Staff is friendly and service is quite good. The decor is typical blue and white greek island, nothing fancy but clean and nice. This restaurant is no where near our home, but when we want greek food there is no other, it is well worth th drive.
My wife and I first tried Sparta when it was still Empire Greek Taverna some 3 years ago, and we have regularly enjoyed their 'Calamari For 2' special ever since, a generous portion of crispy calamari the could seemingly feed up to 4 people and for a very low price. We are always greeted by warm, friendly servers and always leave very satisfied with the service, portions and even moreso by the final bill.
The restaurant itself is quite cozy with a very mediterranean atmosphere accented by blue and white walls with framed pictures and assorted plants - and candlelit tables at night. We are always promptly seated and have never found the restaurant to be packed, which helps even more to give it a more romantic, intimate dining experience. My wife and I are regulars for the 'Calamari For 2' but we also love their other Greek appetizers, baked lasagna and their Diary World 5-cheese pizza. We have never yet been disappointed with the quality of the food we receive.
In sum, an intimate restaurant with great food, excellent service, authentic atmosphere, and incredible value.
this place used to be called empire pizza. i remember the first time i went there which was about 10 years ago for soccer and man was it good! my family and i go there for every special occasion (family tradition now) nice and quiet, good service, great food from regular pizza to fancy plates its classy without having to be.i recommend everyone try it at least once. you shouldn't be disappointed if you are then be quiet. oh and its just a different name same management as before.
Yesterday was my first time stepping into this jungle called Sparta, previously known as Empire. The first moment I walked in I was greeted kindly and seated right away. The waitress that served my wife and I was very nice and brought us our drinks right away, the food came shortly and looked like it would be appetizing, however, what is with the metal plates? The presentation of the food is horrible to start with. I ordered Chicken Souvlaki, simple dish, the rice was hard and cold, the potatoes weren't edible completley oiled up, chicken was not bad, came with a greek salad which was the only good part of my dinner, it also came with pita which was cold and hard. During what was supposed to be a nice quiet dinner with my wife, we were interupted by what looked like the owner or boss yelling at her employees. My wife and I were in complete shock and felt very uncomfrotable, we wanted to get out of there! We got our bill and left immediatly... We're never going back!
Had a family night out and haven't been to Sparta for a long time. I think our waitress was new and didn't know the full menu or the nightly specials. A drink accidentally got spilled on my son's pasta dinner. When the waitress came to see how our meal was, I told her about this incident she said can I drain the dish for you, I was stunned by this remark. I said no you can't drain it, its floating in chocolate milk. We were not offered another dinner or any discount of my son's meal. When the bill came I was stunned again that we were charged for the meal and pop refills, really. Will never go back to Sparta and people are amazed when I tell them what happened and that we weren't offered another meal. Word of mouth is the best business.
This restaurant is way over priced! The food was not great and the portions
are not what we are used to for a greek restaurant. The rice was overcooked
and greasy, and the roast potatoes were mushy. The amount of tzatiki that
they give is not very much at all and they charge extra for such a little bit more.
For the prices they charge for their souvlaki you should at least get 2 skewers.
Not great at all
