Samz is a neighbourhood pub serving pub classics. What your favourite sporting event on one of the many plasma TV's.
Went on a weekday night. Food was good. Good selection, and reasonable prices. Halibut burger was really good, caesar salad - store bought variety. Not great, nothing to write home about. Sliders were good but charged extra for garlic mayo.
Decent but not memorable wine list and small cocktail menu. I don't understand why these places don't print and sell the specials and cocktails. Menu said martinis were on special, but no where did it list any martinis or describe them. I would have ordered one it if somewhere it sounded good. So I just ordered a plain old glass of wine.
Blonde waitress sucked and was rude. I would not sit in her section again. Had to ask for a CLEAN glass with each wine order. They just try to pour it in your dirty old glass. Cheap and gross.
Had a 2frer1 coupon so not bad. I liked it that it was older people like over 35 not a bunch of teenies.
Good vibe, music volume and sport on tv if you like that(not).
I recently moved from the area where Samz is located... One of the things my Husband and I miss is our nights out after a long work day .... at Samz . The Customer service is remarkable, , we often enjoy the fact that everyone seems to know and enjoy each other. I / we never had a negative experience, in fact we met many patrons, and neighbours there, who kept coming back. Food is great !! My fav. is the Seafood Club....Wor Wonton Soup ..and My husband loves the Slammin Samz..... We are a professional couple who travels a great deal, and so we have alot of medium to up scale Pub/Bistos to compare...and hands down Samz wins every time !!
This place has great potential because it's in a busy area and it's a nice looking pub. However, I have been three times hoping that the food would improve but it hasn't. Worst pub food in the area and the service is absolutely terrible. I wanted so badly to like this place but I will never return based on the poor service and overpriced, underwhelming food.
Moved to the Tri City area...My Brother in law suggested I give Samz a try. This is home away from home...
My wife, and sister have gone afew times now. We are from the California area, and have many experiences in many neighbourhood eateries/Bistros. We are impressed!!!! There was a instant greeting when we entered, Did not wait but for 30 seconds, to have a server greet us. The games..(football) which i am getting used to Canadian football !! Were on the T.V.'s. ..What amazed me most was the relationship i observed with the patrons who knew each other, and the manner in which the staff/servers treated people. They cared, laughed, took orders, were competent..(as i observed) I enjoyed the food, Had Nachos, and Perogies with my group...great food ..really warm service... Coming from "south" this is a warm welcome, and nice change...My wife, and i and Family will certainly be back. Who ever Mr. Samz is ..Thanks!!!
This is a time for me and my brother to hang out.. we often go to Samz for Taco Tuesdays..and all the time...they are really cool there, they seem to know peoples names..which is cool..I feel like its cozy there... We also like Wednesdays for Perogies.....They have a Killer Prime Rib on Fidays...With a yorkshire, big enough you can sit in ..!!! Check out Samz!!! for great service, food, and where everybody knows your name !!!
The food is good..The people are really great!!
I went here with my husband and another couple a few weeks ago. We ordered appies to start and they were SO SMALL. The quality of food at this place is not good. I don't even expect that much from a Port Coquitlam pub, but this was very bad. Plus the cooks were so loud, we could hear them and their loud music from our table.
Our waitress was equally as diappointing. She was moody and not very pleasant. From the way she was speaking to one of the other girls, she must have been a manager. I could not believe this.
Other than the convenient location, this place is a BIG THUMBS DOWN.
My wife and I tried this place the first time. We got here 6.45pm, just before the hockey game and there was literally one table left. TV screen are everywhere so you get a good view of the game if you are into that.
Despite being really busy service was quick and attentive. We had hot wings to start with and they were really nice. My wife had a beef sandwich for main and I had beef quesadillas. They were not that spicy as I had hoped but they were not bad either. My wife took her leftovers home and had it the next day.
There were beer specials on Saturday night which was good. I would certainly go back here.
I've gone to Samz four times so far, and every visit gets better. I will admit my first visit was really disappointing. I had read these reviews, and so when I went--I ordered a beer with yam fries. Not a good combination--haha! The place was really nice, but the yam fries reminded me of some McCain's fries that were crimped. They weren't very good.
With the above being said, I think the place has slowly gotten better for me. I think it's a really great "lets sit down and have drinks" type of setting. The beers are pretty pricy--but if you go on the Mondays, I think you probably get the best deal. A cheap beer, with a cheap burger--is awesome, especially if you are a burger person. Add the $1.50 for cheese, and it's still a cheap burger ($3.50). You can't beat that. Also, if you want to go there for hot wings on Thursdays--its on par with the deal you would get at Mr. Mike's.
All in all, it's a great atmosphere pub, but the prices could probably be a bit lower.
I just moved out to PoCo from Langley 6 months ago and have been waiting for a place like Samz to open up! I've been to a number of other pubs in the area and nothing compares! The drink specials were incredible (Canadian only $4.25 every Canuck game) and the food isn't as greasy and slopped together like everywhere else around here. It might not be your typical Pub for PoCo cause it doesn't turn into a night club at night, but it's a great place to meet with friends and relax!!!
I also cannot believe the reviews this Pub is getting. I find myself unable to try everything on the menu because the few things I've tried so far are SO amazing that I keep ordering them. I look forward to all the different things I haven't tried yet.
The managers are friendly, outgoing, and make their way around the tables and talk to a variety of customers. They bought my friend and I a drink because we go in there alot, and that blew me away.
If you are looking for incredible food on a consistent basis, then Samz is the place to go.
The service level was great!! Management made sure our meal was good. Good portion size, good pub food, prices were slightly higher in areas then some, but you pay for the atmosphere that you dont get at other pubs locally. Great wings and burgers, wings were cheap!!Good place to have cocktails with friends!!!
Very nice new pub with good service. The food is not only overpriced but also horrible. Ordered the hamburger it cost almost $13 I have had better burgers at 7-11. The nachos came to $24 and it was not only a small plate but less cheese than average even though we payed for extra cheese. Talked to a couple of people that went there and they feel the same way the food is horrible. Maybe at half the price it may taste better. If you want a drink in Poco come to this place but don't go there hungary.
Maybe with a few expletives, Gordon Ramsay could convince the current chef of Samz in Port Coquitlam that the quality of food being served at PoCo's brand new, and quite lovely, pub, is just downright hellish. Last Wednesday, my partner and I decided to try Samz for the first time. The venue is great -- suitably upscale for the surrounding development in downtown PoCo -- lots of room, nice ambience, etc. The food, though, was awful.
My thin, greasy corned beef sandwich came with a wilted Caesar salad and the thinnest sliver of a dill pickle I've ever seen. My partner's hamburger was a frozen beef patty..., and the side of fries was right out of the freezer, too. And oh yes, a wafer-thin dill pickle topped off his burger, too.
Since i didn't pay the bill, I can't recall exactly how much our bill came to, however, I do recall that the prices for all menu items were about 30% higher than one would expect to pay for pub fare.
Until the management decides to improve their menu, we won't be back.
And ... oh please, Gordon, we really need your intervention here! Bring your pitchfork.
I usually don't post on this website. After going to Samz I must agree with alot of the posts that the place is beautiful but the food has alot to be desired. Me and my husband when there last week for lunch after reading some of the better reviews I wanted to see for myself. Well I was not impressed at all with the quality of the food. For such a nice place why is the food so average and pricey? It is almost like we have to pay for beautiful Ambiance. Since this is a food website I would give it a 1 out of 10.
I was sooo excited when Poco was getting a new pub. I would walk by it everyday when I was out for my walk and watch the progress when it was being built. Peeking in the windows I saw they were not cheaping out in the decor etc. I went there a few nights after it opened and was surprised....no dart board...keno board...nothing. Couldn't really even hear the music just the boom boom boom of the base. I oredered a caesar to drink and the beans in it were old and dried out...next I wanted something fruity like a fruity martini. The waitress said she would have the bartender make me something. It was fruity with green olives in it salty olives??? I don't know where the bartender came from. The drinks were gross...overpriced and the atmosphere was boring.
My friend and I left and went to the Legion's meat draw next door. Cheaper drinks, way more fun...Very disapointed in Samz :(
After hearing about a new pub, we drove out from Maple Ridge for lunch on a Thursday. It was not worth the drive or the money!
We sat ourselves (totally fine in a pub) and after some time, a girl came over and took our drink orders. They arrived after what seemed to be kind of a long time considering there was maybe ten other people in the restaurant and even more staff hanging around the bar. She dropped the drinks and left. Eventually a different waitress came over and asked what we wanted. We asked for a suggestion but she wasn't much help. My boyfriend settled on a burger with yam fries and I ordered the calamari thinking it's a pretty safe bet...
After 30 minutes our food arrived, the waitress dropped it and took off before we could even say that we had ordered yam fries and gotten regular fries. My calamari was absolutely the worst I have ever had! I only ate two pieces and asked my boyfriend to confirm how bad it was so he ate one piece. I just pushed the plate away, they tasted like oil (so gross). Since none of the waitresses ever came back my bf started into his burger. Finally I was able to make eye contact with her and she asked "what?" from across the restaurant! I told her and she's like, "oh yeah, you did" and went to get it fixed. My boyfriend was able to finish his burger and we waited for the yam fries, that's how long they took. Again, they dropped it and took off, not even clearing the other plates which were both pushed away. Yam fries were good thankfully. Burger was mediocre according to my bf.
When she finally came to clear the plates she asked what was wrong with my calamari and without making a scene I said it was alright, not great. I figured it wasn't worth our time anymore. She didn't care obviously anyways and brought us the bill.
It's a shame that such a nice, new pub would allow this. What's the point of investing all that money and then not providing any service! I don't get it.
Don't waste your time or money!
I agree with the other reviewer. The ambiance was good, service was just fine, but the food was awful.
I ordered a burger. took a bite and was overcome with how dry it was. I then peeked inside it to see a very tiny quarter size dollop of mayo - and that was all. My only thought was that they must be rationing it.
Of course, the meat was over cooked - so the mayo was necessary.
The server promplty got me a side order to make it palitable.
Its all to bad - it had the makings of a great local hang out.
Lookie, after reading your post below, i would love to know what you continue to order that is just "SO amazing"?
I have to say that I agree with most other posters in saying that i feel as though I am paying for the ambiance. If there really is something on the menu that is worth the price that Samz has chosen to charge I would really like to know what it is. I really do hope that this pub can get their act together, we need somewhere nice in PoCo!
I don't know who gave this high rating for food but I am sure they work for the pub. Never seen prices so high for food outside of a five star hotel. I am not sure who run this place but they have it completely wrong when it comes to the food. Not only it appears to be all frozen but it tastes aweful. I when there last night with 4 friends to watch the hockey game. We started out with Nachos and Wings. The Nachos over $20 and the wings around $10 both were subpar, the Nachos had very little on it. For dinner I order the Fish and Chips $16 for frozen fish that tasted like it was bought at Costco. My friend order burger, steak, and a club sandwich. The club was the only think that tasted ok and look alright because I guess you can't buy those frozen. Its too bad its a nice place and the waitress are good but the food are both over priced and disgusted. We all agreed we would not be returning.
I went to Samz last night, after waiting a while for it to open. Being English, I was in need of a good local pub! This is it! Although I didn't rate it well, that was more for the food and food prices. It's a great pub, where you go go for a few beers mid week, and chat with friends. We're going again on Friday night to check it out again - but if you're looking for an English type "local" this place comes quite close, all they need is a pool table and darts board!!
