Matteo's is a quaint little Italian cafe nestled in the heart of downtown Poco.
This place is great.
We tried it for the first time this summer. As other posters have mentioned the portions are generous, the prices reasonable and the ice cream is amazing. The flavours are just wonderful and the gelato is so creamy.
Highly recommended if you're in the area. They also served baked goods but I've never tried any.
On a hot summer evening, this place is busier than night market.
I can only comment on gelato as that's all I've had at this place. The owner is always adding new flavours and is super friendly. I always get a small waffle cone... because it's just so BIG. I like to try the new flavours when I'm there and the servers are always super friendly and don't mind that I'm such a picky taster. Back to the size of gelato... ever been to MG on robson? I remember thinking "I paid X amount of dollars and all I got was this teeeeeensy little cone of ice cream?" You'll never feel that way at Matteo's.
Pop on by for dessert, you won't regret it.
I love this place, the gelato is delicious and it always tastes fresh! There are many flavors to choose from, the staff is very nice and they always let you try out whatever flavor you want. The portions are large aswell, elsewhere I would get a medium cup and still want more, however I usually get a small cup at mateo's and its plenty for me. They are priced very well for the quality and quantity that you receive. I hope that this place does very well, as I would like to see it stick around for a while and serve the Port Coquitlam residents!
Food: The gelato is super delicious, they don't have a lot of selections but the hazelnut chocolate is very rich and leaves you craving for more. there is also a non-diary selection.
Service: Friendly staff, encourages you to try out the different flavours and lets you know which choices are the fresher ones.
Value: Great price, you can mix the flavours. A small size gelato would be equivalent to a medium or large elsewhere. You can take a waffle cone over the cup for no extra charge.
Went there with my 2 kids, and as soon as we started looking at the gelato, we were almost immediately handed a mini spoon with whatever flavour gelato we set our eyes on. It's not very often that a gelato place is so eager to let you try so many different flavours before deciding.
When we couldn't decide, we were told we could make flavours, even for the small cup! The portion was very generous and my kids were delighted!
Will definitely go back again! Looking forward to the summer when they will have more flavours.
This place has the best gelato I've ever had. Way better than Mario's or La Casa Gelato and the owner is much more polite than the surly owners of those other places. The values surpasses both as well.
A very large scoop(for the quality you get) is just about $3. Cones or dishes are teh same price so why not get a fresh waffle cone. In the winter there's often only one side of the cooler open but still plenty to choose from. It's awesome.
To tell you the truth, I've never had anything else there so I don't know about the sanwiches etc but they are displayed in plastic boxes in a very noisy cooler so they're not made to order. The latte I did have once was nothing to write home about. But the gelato - oh the gelato.
My only other comment when the place opened was it used the exact set up, decorations, and way outdated tables and chairs from the former business(Lattays) that failed. It always boggles me when people buy a failed restaurant and don't change it and expect it to be successful. I guess in this case the gelato was enough. I'd recommend it to go though.
I note that the other reviews only comment on the (outstanding) gelato here.
There is so much more!
I am a regular here for lunches. Excellent sandwiches (fresh fillings and terrific bread), soups (different choices every day) and coffee drinks.
The owner is on-site every day and makes you feel very welcome.
OK, I already live here, but overall Port Coquitlam is a bit of a wasteland for good restaurants. Matteo`s is one of only a few exceptions.
As soon as you look at their selection you mouth starts watering. Sample all you want, its encouraged and there is sure to be a flavour to suit your particular craving or mood. Enjoy a decent latte and a gelato in a cup or cone. The staff are great, friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed and fun.
I really hope this place can stay in business long enough to take advantage of the downtown housing boom Poco is currently experiencing. From the looks of the happy patrons, the chances are very good.
Matteo's is a family-run business that seems to make customer service its top priority. I've been to other gelato places that limit tasters, but at Matteo's, the servers often encourage you to try more!
The serving sizes are generous (in fact, my only beef about Matteo's is that they don't have a smaller portion than their "small", which is, in my mind, quite large!) and the prices are very good.
The gelato is all made on-site and comes in lots of delicious flavours. Not as many as one gelato place in the lower mainland, but I like the quality of the flavours better than any other gelato place!
Matteo's also does coffee, espresso, and light meals. The place is often hopping, especially in the summer and evenings--it seems to be a real meeting place in downtown Port Coquitlam.
I went in and the servers were very friendly and constantly asking if I wanted to try any of the flavours.
I got a size small one and they said I could mix flavours and get up to as many flavours as I wanted. The waffle cone and chocolate was free too! I got cookies and cream and chocolate hazelnut - delicious!
When I went to the counter to pay, the cashier saw that I was sharing my gelato with someone and told one of the servers to give me another piece of chocolate leaf. Paid only $3.13 tax included; most places charge $4 and flavour mixing is not allowed.
They have a nice patio outside or you can sit inside to eat, the place is decorated nicely.
