Finally, we got the best sushi place in PoCo.
When you enter this restaurant, there in NO fish smell and looks very clean...That's what I love this place at first. Most importantly, the sushi is Excellent.....I can say the best sushi in PoCo for sure. When I first came there, the restaurant was packed up....At that time, I had to wait around 30~40 minutes for my sushi, so I wasn't so happy BUT when I had first bite of Salmon nigiri, all changed....It definately worths for waiting. I even order more because it was SO GOOD.
I just let you know...
Do not confuse the GinMi with Ginza.....They all seems same when you drive by. But the taste is Totally different. Because I made same mistake when my friends told me about this GinMi. I went to the Ginza instead then blame my friends....:)
I and my husband are sushi mania. we've tried almost all sushi place in Great Vancouver and Ginmi sushi and grill is one of our favorite restaurant. It's just brand new restaurant and located in a new mall so i got to know this place 2 month ago thanks to my friend.
Food: Every fish was incredibly fresh and taste good. The chef told me that he orders just a little amount of the restaurant stuffs (example, fish , vege, meat ...) day by day and this is one of the reason they keep the fish fresh like that.
And they have great teriyaki foods like chicken, beef teriyaki and even their yakisoba noodle is so delicious and huge size.
The tempura is very crispy and not so much oily.
Actually there are less kinds of food than other sushi restaurant for now, but they're planning to upgrade their menu soon and i'm waiting for the new menu now.
Service: We're going to his restaurant twice a week these days. Whenever we go there the waitress remember our favorite drink and menu. And she tries to check our table often and tries not to miss the empty tea cups.
Frankly speaking i'm not the person to write down this kind of review. But this time i was very upset because of the review below. If the food is not his style, that's fine. There is no need to say that aggressive sentence. That's very RUDE because lots of people love that place for sushi. If you don't like, just KEEP IN YOURSELF! Not every restaurant is for your taste!!!!
I wish people were more carefull when they write reviews. I just went to this place, because of the good reviews and it is simply gross. If you haven't been to a lot of restaurants of that type, please mention it in your review, to forewarn others.
I rated the food "poor" because:
- The miso soup was so salty neither of us could have a second spoon (there were 3 of us).
- The sushi is slightly better than what you'd get in a convenient store.
- The gyoza is a bland and cheap mix of rice noodles and some green mashed up food, nothing else.
Service:
The service seemed alright, although it was a take out, so it is hard to judge.
Value:
This is about the same quality (or lack thereof) as Suishaya and SushiTown and all those low-level sushi restaurants which seem to be popping up around every corner in the TriCities. Not the quality of a Tojo's, for example, which would get a 5 star rating.
Ambiance:
Can't judge (take out), but DineHere doesn't allow for N/A rating. It was mostly empty, so not much ambiance.
If you are looking for a cheap yet somewhat edible sushi, I recommend Nagano or Kisoya, which are in the same price range.
My husband and I saw this restaurant a few times on our to and from stores in the strip mall. It's not very visible from the road. From the first time we tried the restaurant (in August), we've been regular weekly customers ever since.
Having tried many Japanese restaurants, my husband and I have to say that this is one of the best and the best for the price. It is a culinary treat to have such fresh tasting food, where you can appreciate the distinctiveness of the ingredients, and dishes that are so well presented. It's representative of a philosophy behind Japanese food, in my opinion, yet with decent portions! My husband was so impressed with the presentation of many dishes that he's been taking photos on his iPhone! (I should figure out a way to post them).
The dinner menu for 2, 3 or 4 people is impressive. For example, for $40 you can get a wonderful, good sized dinner for 2: miso soup, tempura and another choice of appetizer (e.g. gyoza), a daily special and the choice of teriyaki, udon or sushi/sashimi. This is followed by cold plum juice which is a nice light end to a great meal. We don't use salt much and don't find the food salty where in most places we do.
We always chat with the chef, who's actually the owner, when we can. He and his wife are very nice people. What I appreciate about him is that when we chat, you can see that he takes a lot of pride in what he does and the quality of the food and is respectful of the ingredients (i.e. makes the sushi and maki in a traditional manner so as not to 'kill the rice' -- what it means to me is that it's not heavy, broken and crushed like at some places). Even items like the gyoza are made in-house. He's also willing to explain what he does, compared to other chefs, having been trained in Japan and having worked in different restaurants.
I have to agree with another reviewer is that once word gets around, it'll be good and bad. ; ) However, we really hope word gets around as the food and its people are gems. The owner plans on making some changes to the look over time (i.e. putting up low walls between tables).
A few other comments:
- They have a take-out menu. We've ordered sushi platters and they've been great.
- This is a place to have a nice dinner, not a quickie sushi stop (i.e. rolls are not premade). If you order multiple dishes, they come individually as each takes time to prepare.
- If you like spicy maki -- the spicy sockeye maki is AWESOME. Okay, not Japanese per se, but "fusion".
- We're thrilled that such a place exists in the 'burbs!
Decided to try this place after reading 1st review. Service was excellent. I just finished a 10km run and was super thirsty. The waitress refilled my glass 4 times, and finally gave me a bigger glass. All this without prompting which is unusual for asian restaurants.
The Sashimi "add on" appetizer to lunch was fairly generous for $4.50. Sashimi was fresh. odered any roll + sashimi lunch special ($10). Negitoro roll was fresh tasting.
Nice touch was instead of the regular cheap hard candy, they give bite sized chocolate bars.
There have been a few new japanese restaurants opening in the area (sushi mori, Miya) and competition is fierce, not everyone will be left standing, forcing the old restaurants like Nagasakiya (which badly needed a face lift) to close down. It will be left to be seen if even Nagano will survive, as the new ones can offer a better experience at a lower price.
We first tried this restaurant after our usual Japanese restaurant in PoCo closed down.
PRESENTATION & AMBIANCE
We were taken back by the ambiance and presentation. The facilities were bright, new and exceptionally clean. Their cuisine is served upon creative black tableware. The food was decoratively laid out with subtle uses of sauces purposefully drizzled to create an artistic accent.
FOOD & QUALITY
Upon sampling the cuisine, we found that the food was on par with their presentation. The seafood was fresh, vegetables were cooked but firm, the miso was flavourful, and the sushi rice was cooked to perfection. If you are a fan of California Rolls and/or Dynamite Rolls, they have a double sized option which uses real crab meat. It can also be ordered spicy which we found added a nice zest.
SERVICE
What made this restaurant stand out was the exceptional service. Our tea and water glasses were always topped up. Food was brought out promptly and served up with a smile.
VALUE
When the bill came small touches such as a fish pen and a chocolate after dinner mint really highlighted their attention to detail and uniqueness. The icing on the cake was the value of the food. It was less expensive than other comparable restaurants in the area without sacrificing portions or presentation.
ACCOMMODATING TO PARTIES
Since we enjoyed their restaurant so much. I decided to have them host my wife's surprise birthday party. They made every effort to accommodate my requests and close to 60 guests. After the party was over, I received several compliments on the food; even by guest who hadn't tried Japanese food and those who weren't big fans of Japanese food. With the holidays approaching, this would be a best bet for a staff or office party.
CONCLUSION
Since our first visit, this restaurant has easily rose to the top to be our favourite Japanese restaurant. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who either enjoys Japanese food or would like to try it for the first time. My only regret is that once people find out about this place, it won't be a secret but I'll be glad that they're getting the business they deserve.
I'd also like to note that I have never taken the time to write a restaurant review before but I felt compelled after my experiences with them.
Just had lunch there over the weekend. Everything is very new. Very good service, the waitress has a smile on her face all the time. The food is great, though a bit salty. I think the chefs are korean, and they serve their teriyaki on a heated stone plate which is awesome! Their teriyaki lunch box is only $9 with miso soup and salad, teriyaki beef and tempura. Their sushi is good too.
