Trendy cafe with local, freshly roasted coffees, teas, paninis, salads & baked goods.
I used to live in North Vancouver, within easy reach of Cafe Artigiano amongst other snobby coffee shops. Now living in Pitt Meadows, finding any eatery of any kind above the quality of a White Spot is pretty tough. I certainly hope that the arrival of Jabula is indicative that suburban mediocrity (in terms of coffee especially) is becoming a thing of the past.
The food is largely made on site, which is great. The sandwiches are better than anything you'll find at the nearby subway, as are the wraps, and the baked goods are all baked on premises as well - none of this marked-up and store-bought garbage. The coffee is (of course) the most important thing. The beans themselves are great quality, sourced from JJ Bean, one of Vancouver's premier roasters. The Barista's are variable in quality - some know how to make an excellent cup of coffee (the owner, for one), others are sorely in need of some lessons. That's alright, though - practice and time will bring them around, I am sure.
Service is great. Both the owner and the rather attractive ladies he has working for him are all very friendly and sociable, differing greatly from the 'pleasant but stiff' service you'd normally find in many other cafes. Part of the attraction of a good coffee shop should indeed be the people working there.
Ambiance is very nice. Definitely going with the African vibe, it certainly works. It's noticeable inside, in terms of decor, but it isn't gratuitous by any means; a few pieces of African artwork, and a floor-scheme reminiscent of dusty plains certainly create the atmosphere.
Overall, while this place isn't on par with the absolute pinnacle of snobby coffee joints in Vancouver, it is a very close 'second place', and certainly carries none of that pretentious aura that the Artigiano's of the world do.
Highly recommended. Who'd have thought to find somewhere this good in Pitt Meadows?
This coffee place is now closed and is replaced by a Vietnamese Restaurant - DT Pho & Coffee. They just opened in April 2009. I can't say how pleased we are with another great diverse eatery addition to the Pitt Meadows location. The food is great, it was the previous owner of Pho 99 in Coquitlam. We have gone back twice since then!
It is nice to have a coffee shop that has an atmosphere where you can just relax. The coffee is great, if you need something to eat they have a pretty good selection of sandwiches that taste pretty good. The owner and staff are friendly and treat you great.
The patio is nice when the weather cooperates. The icecream is pretty good on a hot day, even on the not so hot days.
I was quite excited for this cafe to open down the street from me...I've tried their muffins..which are fantastic and a great price for what you get...and will hopefully try a few different items as I've heard they are good. Special coffee's are really iffy..depending on who is working. I've tried 3 times now on Saturday mornings and had a younger boy...I can tell he is trying..but every time the coffee has been less than desired....way too hot...burn the roof of your mouth hot...and it loses all flavour....I will return to try other things.....but I will not order a 4 dollar coffee anymore ...I'm not usually one to complain but today was just the final straw for me on speciality coffee's..hopefully the owner will get some of the staff barista training...with 3 other coffee shops within walking distance and a few comments from other locals...it's not doing business any good to have the drinks so iffy based on whose working.
I'm all for supporting the local guy over the multi-national conglomerate, but if they're going to charge me 4 bucks for a coffee I can get at Starbucks for $2.50, they better offer something pretty special to keep me coming back. Their "baristas" are obviously in need of some training as well - the kid who served me on Saturday morning didn't know how to make an Americano - it's just espresso and hot water, right? The ambiance is a welcome oasis in parched Pitt Meadows - I will give them another chance but it's tough to justify the cost.
I have been going to this new cafe since it opened a couple of months ago. Very nice decor, with nice music & a good vibe. They are using JJ Bean coffee, one of Vancouver's best roasters. A smoother tasting coffee than the typical Starbucks. The muffins baked on site a fantastic, and the paninis are extremely good too. They are now selling great salads. The free internet is a nice touch. I'm sure this will get to be a busy spot when the word gets out.
