The Exchange Restaurant (Formerly the Elephant and Castle, still the same people and owners) has undergone major renovation and now has a completely different and more upmarket look, moving away from their previous incarnation. I very much like the open feel and the clean, modern look but unfortunately that is all I can say in a positive manner.
The food itself was not the worst I've had but was certainly nothing special. The burger was bland, the fries were nice enough but for the price I couldn't help but feel I should have gone across to one of the other nearby pubs or even just gone into the mall food court!
The service was terrible, for a farily quiet Wednesday night I would never think it would take so long to get served and trying to get the bill took far too long.
If the food court seating is full or you can't walk five mintues to another pub style restaurant than I would say give it a shot (but try to sit close to the waitress station or bar so they have to see you!) but otherwise eat anywhere else. I can think of at least 10 other places within a five minute walk that offer better food and service.
I dined here a couple nights in a row and other than the fact that they ran out of the sirloin by 9:00 PM on a Tuesday night, the service was good with better than average pub fare. Difficult to find healthy alternatives, so not the place if your looking for healthy fare. Good selection of beers. It's still early, so internal is nicely done but not clear who the regular patrons will be. Felt a bit yuppy with a mix of local regulars (yes, even this early) and not very busy. Seating at the bar is very limited, so plan to have a booth in the bar area or a table. Beer selection was good and the service staff actually seemed to care about what I thought. However, as I'm a late diner, as the night headed toward closing they seemed more interested in getting out of there than serving, but this is minor. Definitely disappointed that they only had 30 sirloins total for the day, but I'm sure they'll work this out.
