We stayed in the Lonsdale area for a business trip and went to Pier 7 restaurant for dinner with our group. The atmosphere and views were great but the food was a big let down.
We started Our dinner with the seafood nachos which were nothing more then bagged taco chips with cheddar cheese, thawed shrimp, and pieces some sort of unidentified fish. These came with salsa and what seemed to be a side of ranch dip. The cheese was not fully melted and overall they lacked flavor, and seemed to be slapped together. Very disappointing for $20.
We also asked for an order of the steamed mussels and were told that they had run out of mussels and only had clams, which we settled for. They were just o.k. and came in a flavorless chili and lime seasoning.
Our next dish was the seafood chowder in a red base. The soup was flavorless and watery, with small bits of seafood. This seemed like something that had been reheated from Costco and for almost $ 10 per bowl I expected better quality.
Lastly we had the lobster macaroni and cheese. This dish was about as good as the nachos. It consisted of undercooked pasta and watery cheese sauce, with small chunks of mystery fish.
Save your money on this place and stay away. It looks cool inside but the food was a total let down. We had much better food at the lounge in the Pinnacle hotel, and for a quarter of the price during happy hour.
I've only tried the plain donuts here once but I left very disappointed. I have a sweet tooth and so it's not often that someone screws up a dessert for me. After brunch at the Arms Reach Bistro this spring, I decided to stop at this place for a treat, as I had read that this is one of the top attractions of Deep Cove.
I find it hard to describe the donuts because they lacked any flavor. I find donuts from major grocery stores to be mediocre (dry and too sweet), but these might rank even lower. I can only hope that I had a bad batch, because I don't understand the hype about this place.
I initially came for the weekend brunch based on positive reviews I had read online and wasn't disappointed. The eggs benny with smoked salmon is the best I've ever had. I recently went for lunch here over the May long weekend and despite crowds of tourists we managed to get a table right away and had a very pleasant lunch experience. I had the stinky burger with fries which was delicious. During both my visits, I got the impression that the chefs really pay attention to the food they make and that the ingredients they use, unlike the run-of-the-mill franchises.
Combined with a stroll around beautiful Deep Cove before and after the meal, it's totally worth driving to this place.
I had to make an account to just rave about this place. It recently opened up in Park and Tilford mall and I have to say I am delighted. I heard about this place from friends and I just wish I found out about this place before...I've been missing out on delicious Indian food! The restaurant looks very nice inside and very "indianish" with all of the Indian inspired designs and pictures. I went with a group, and I had Beef curry, eggplant bartha, and daal with some naan and rice on the rice. I can honestly say that it was the best Indian food I've had in a while! I definitively recommend this place with great pride.
I live in Victoria, but whenever I am able to come to North Vancouver, I buy a box of cream cakes from Laleh Bakery. I love this place. The cakes are so light and soft, with just the right amount of sweetness and balance of flavors. I wish there was a bakery like this in Victoria.
A few of us decided to get together for a bite at this place last night, as storming new territory can often have unexpected pleasures. Holy crap! I had no idea what I was in for. I'd like to think that I've been to most of the best restaurants Vancouver has to offer, but now I'm thinking that I may have to spend more time on the North Shore and in the suburbs to find true gems such as this.
The service was simply outstanding. Our beautiful waitress and handsome bartender had impeccable service. I remember dining at the Burj-Al-Arab several years ago in Dubai, the world's only 7-star hotel. Their service was akin to that experience. Drinks were never empty, politeness at the forefront, smiles from all the chefs; you could tell that this was a happy place where everyone wanted to take care of you. And that, they did.
Let's start with the cocktails. My girlfriend and I had some serious trouble choosing cocktails, because they all sounded so delectable. You could tell that the mixologist who designed these drinks was an artisan in their craft. My girlfriend had one that had hints of lychee and cucumber. I ended up trying one called the Southside which was fantastic! I highly recommend it as a refreshing summer aperitif.
And the food... my god, the food! We ended up splitting some appetizers after much trouble deciding and serious debate. Lobster corn dogs? Are you kidding me? WOW! Three of us ended up splitting a deconstructed poutine and the heirloom tomato salad. I love heirloom tomatoes, and this may be the best heirloom tomato salad in the city. A perfect balance of ripeness and succulence in the tomato coupled with arugula and cheese, drizzled with their profound dressing. In the poutine, each component was separated; the fries were crisp perfection on the outside with those soft innards that we all love so much. The gravy and gruyere cheeses were a knockout match for them in one's mouth. Which brings me to my first complaint (if you can call it that): there was seemingly too much cheese for the poutine. Sacrilege? Perhaps. We remedied this situation by dipping the incredible fresh baked bread that was complimentary in the gruyere. I nearly fell off my chair. Absolute magic.
And our mains? Best food in the city, no holds barred. After serious indecision (a thank you again to our server for her patience, life is full of worse problems!), I ended up trying the Lamb Two Ways. On the one hand, you have the lamb chops with an aioli beyond belief, which paired have established supremacy over any grilled lamb dish I have ever had. As if holding that throne wasn't enough, there was a lamb shepherd's pie to go with it. The veggies it came with were dipped in some sort of light tempura batter, adding a wonderful texture of crispness to them. I also had the luxury of trying a few bites of the flat iron steak with bone marrow spread upon it. In all honestly, every main sounds this good.
The wine list looked spectacular; I must say that there really is something for everyone here at any price range, region and grape varietal.
We were unfortunately too full to try dessert, so till next time!
I honestly cannot wait to return to this restaurant again. The warm, cozy, inviting atmosphere; the exquisite level of service beyond any expectation; the wonderful selection of cocktails; the utterly delicious and unparalleled food; the diversity of the wine list; and the friendliness of all the staff... it all comes together with such flawless execution. I am salivating just reminiscing of last night as I write this. Thank you to everyone there for the wonderful time, and looking forward to nothing else but our next visit!
We originally headed to our 1st choice in the neighbourhood, Genji, only to find them closed so ended up here, and lucky thing. The new owner is clearly very motivated to change things for the better. It was busy for a Sunday night and the place was fuller than I've seen it before. We were worried when we saw how busy it was because the last time we'd been here we ended up leaving because we couldn't get any service at all when it was the previous owners.
This time, everything went tickety boo. We ordered dinner boxes A & B, Maki Combo, Cali-rolls, Sunomono, Gomae, saki and beer. Everything was served in a timely manner and our waitress was pleasant, efficient and aniticipated our needs for tea refills, condiments and drinks. The fish was excellent quality and presentation of the dinner boxes was especially appetizing. The California rolls aren't very large but tasted fine.
Dinner for 4 came to $75 + we left 25% tip. We have been tiring of Genji a little lately and it irks me that they charge $1.00 for a tiny dish of spicy sauce there, so I'm very happy Osaka is now up to snuff. Not only that, we all agreed after this last meal at Osaka that this will now be 1st choice over Genji for neighbourhood sushi. Hopefully the new owners can keep up the good start.
I was on my way out to another place last night but when I saw the Portly Chef open I quickly parked and went there. I have to say I am quite critical of restaurants I guess because I like to cook myself. This place was the best food I have ever been served, it was so beautiful I didn't want to cut into it, but when I did it tasted as beautiful as it looked. I seldom write reviews on things but this place was so amazing I had to write one. So not only was the food the best I have ever eaten, the portions were good and price was good, and to top it off the house wine is my all time favourite JLhor. The service was excellent!! I cannot say enough good about this place, I am taking my staff there next week and am so excited for them to try everything and feel the same as I do.
My wife and I were walking Lonsdale for dinner. We decided to try The Portly Chef. As it turns out they are not actually having a grand opening till next week but are open on what they called a "soft open".
The food and service was excellent. The food was very well presented and tasted amazing. I had a poutine appitizer and my wife had a tomato salad. She actually took a picture of the food.
For dinner I had lamb that was cooked two ways; a rack plus a lamb shepard pie. My wife had the pork chop. Portions were large enough that we shared from each others plate. Will definitely go back and can't wait to see what this place will be like when they fully launch.
I agree with the other review that the music was a little off for the restaurant.
The food is amazing here or i can say this has been the best persian restaurant in town (former kashcool) Start with a smoky mizra ghasemi move on to perfumed rice accompanying melt-off-the-bone braised lamb and do save room for vermicelli ice cream with saffron and rose water.
Also enjoy hookah and persian tea after dinner at their outdoor patio
We finally called in here mid-week for an evening meal, with the mother-in-law from out of town, having seen the place was popular.
We had a short wait for a table, so opted to review the menu at the counter / bar whilst waiting.
Not having had too much sushi in the past we were novices, but wanted to try something different & requested helpful recommendations from the waitress. However, her standard of English was poor & she gave the impression she couldn't be bothered & didn't want to be there.
There was a large selection of dishes, mainly priced between $7 & $15, but we had no idea what they were or more importantly, how big each menu item was. We ordered a crisp go-go roll, some clams & some sushi to be shared by three, only to find it wasn't enough. The waitress didn't really help with the quantity ordering, despite us asking !
The dishes certainly looked attractive, but some were sadly lacking in quantity & taste. We ordered more, having looked at what others were eating & were still none-too-impressed.
We came to the conclusion the cooked dishes were far better than the sushi.
There was a moderate selection of wines & bottled beers, but nothing on draft.
There were quite a few fruit flies buzzing around the tables !!
We went with open minds & high expectations of trying something different for a change, but were sadly disappointed. Shame, because it's quite conveniently located for us. Maybe we'll try sushi in 2 or 3 years time, at another restaurant !
It is not the Cucina right next store but a far better affair. We heard about the soft opening last week and we thought it would be good to check this new fine dining restaurant out. Once inside we found the staff was friendly, decent, and attentive. The decor was good and a notch up from what was seen in the Tutu Bene that used to reside here. This restaurant has a whole new atmosphere and a entirely different menu. We had a variety of appetizers to start and all were unique and superb tasting. The main courses were delicious too. And the pastries?! The pastries are to die for. The pastries are created by the same person who supplied pastries to the Chambar over in Vancouver. Overall the food was tasty, well presented, smartly priced, and the portions were good. The ambiance was good but the music was a little all over the map. I am sure that will improve once the restaurant further defines itself. If you are like us and have been longing for finer dining on the North Shore, check out the latest in fine dining on central Lonsdale. And congratulations to the new owner and Chef for putting together a good team.
Went for lunch here with a friend. We were looking for another sushi place but we noticed this place and gave it a try for lunch. They had some good bento box options and some nice pricing, at least for lunch. The menu had a lot of other options but we both settled for bento box (E)
Good service and decent ambiance there. The lunch was served pretty quickly and was your standard bento box fair. We had a solid lunch and would go there again, particularly with a larger group (there is a lot of room).
By the way, I was immediately impressed with the size of the glasses they use for serving water. Most restaurants, particularly asian ones (where the norm is drinking hot water or tea) use the smallest, wimpiest glasses when you ask for cold water. Here they gave some super size-glasses that lasted through the mail - a small thing I now... but it helps not having to wait for a refill in the middle of a spicy meal.
We were feeling uninspired for making dinner last Friday and hadn't ordered pizza for a while so we browsed the collection of takeout menus that are stuffed regularly through our mail slot. Decided we'd try Panagos because we couldn't remember ever ordering from them before and they had some interesting looking pies. We ordered 3 large pizzas on regular crusts and they were at our door in about 20 minutes...wow.
The Veggie Mediterranean was the best of the 3 with the onions, spinach and feta making a flavourful topping combo. But the Italian Deli and Tropical Chicken were sparse on toppings and quite bland which was disappointing. And the bill came to $60 before tip. Not our best pizza delivery adventure.
We have eaten here a few times and always enjoyed ourselves. This time we did take out so there wasn't a place to the ambiance to choose from. But we have been here and the decor is nice and appropriate for a nice family run authentic Japanese restaurant.
We did take out this time. The food was all ready for us when we picked it up. First, I like the people. They are nice and try hard and to me that makes all the difference. They are Japanese. When I saw there last time our waitress/server was so nice. This time the owners wife was there and she was very nice. So for service I gave a five stars.
The food is very nice. The sushi chef is right there and makes it for you. The fish is fresh and the food from the kitchen was very good. We got the basics today, rolls, sushi, tempura, and an burdock root (I think it was, which was so tasty-deep fried root). So for food, for the three times we eaten here and done the take out, it has always been fresh and tasty. For the rolls, when the rice tastes fresh and not stale that is a big thing for us. Here, the rice is fresh. You can see them making everything.
For the cost, I would say it is very reasonable. It is not fine dining but the place is clean (which is always important), the people are very nice and try hard, the food is fresh and good quality, the location is convenient. Overall, I would recommend and I will be back to enjoy.
Bravo Cucina is my family's favourite restaurant on the North Shore. The food is fresh and delicious, and the service is professional and friendly. The atmosphere is cozy and romantic, and it doesn't have the usual rushed, busy and loud feel that larger restaurants usually do. It is the perfect date restaurant if couples are looking to spend a night out, the perfect restaurant for celebrating a classy birthday or anniversary, the perfect restaurant if you want to catch up with a few friends.
PS. the tortellini is to die for.
I've been to Doc's a few times, and if the weather is nice, i will order to go due to the very limited seating. The pizza is never greasy, fresh tasting with lots on top of the pizza. I love the pizza, its thin crust and crunchy. I have tried the meat lovers, ham and pineapple to pepperoni and mushroom, all so far have been good. Two slices usually fill me up and what I usually do, I take it to go and eat outside around the area.
Not the biggest place, and hidden since its not a big location.
I found about this place while I was at Thomas Haas having a cappuccino. It was great and I found out that Thomas Haas uses Moja Coffee. I decided to head to north van last weekend to visit Moja Coffee Cafe -)
It's not that far out of the way, just over the Iron Workers Memorial Bridge and it's about 5 minutes off the freeway.
Place is nice, they roast their own beans in house. Staff seem pretty passionate about their coffee. They didn't have much for food options here, more of a strictly coffee house with a few muffins or pastry type snacks to choose from. I had a cappuccino for $3.75 and it was fantastic, 5 out of 5. I've visited a lot of coffee houses in the lower mainland and Moja makes the best espresso by far. From now on I will only use Moja espresso at my home also (they sell bags of beans for $16)
After reading reviews here, we were hesitant to venture into Andreas, but do know how easy it is to post negative opinions so decided to try it. Totally enjoyed our meals - a great selection at reasonable prices - and so much food. We all took food home with us. Service was great, a very casual atmosphere which families can
enjoy at ease. Glad we came in, and we will be back. The lovely fresh loaf of bread given us as we left was such a bonus!
Went there recently on Saturday night. It was very busy, but the service was prompt. I had calamari dinner, which was excellent and not greasy at all. My husband's lamb shank was very tender. Very creamy Zatziki. In addition to usual selections they offer some unfamiliar (to me anyways) casserole dishes too. Will go back again.
