We have eaten here many times and never been disappointed. The staff has been helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask the staff for suggestions they are more than happy to help you make some new choices that work together. Tan Tan noodles and Mongolian Hot Pots are worth a try. They have a good variety Szechuan cuisine along with house specials and other Chinese dishes. Service is good and the décor is above average for a Chinese restaurant. We will return.

Don't believe the "awards" they've received - the food is horrible

We read that they've received multiple awards for best Chinese food on the North Shore etc... don't believe that stuff! The restaurant is nicely decorated and kinda "swish" - so we decided to give it a try. We love a hip and quirky place like that. But when the food is horrible... that kinda ruins the whole experience.

Why so popular?

The Yum Yum Chinese Restaurant is a very popular spot in North Van, a popularity I can only conclude attests to the dearth of really decent Chinese restos on the North Shore. We bring my Mum here every once in awhile as she, and all her friends love it. Green beans, Bei-jing Duck, Spicy Prawns ...... and all the usual dishes are actually quite well prepared, and taste fabulous!!! Definately will come back!!!

Won't go back

I don't often eat at Chinease restaurants mainly due to the cleanliness issues and the fact that most don't offer debit or credit possibly to avoid tax detection. So I have only tried this place a few times for lunch and a few times for dinner as they do offer debit and visa. The place is cleaner than others but the food was bland and greasy and the service was slow and unimpressive and not overly friendly. The sweet and sour soup did not taste right and the meal for two wasn't worth it even with the discount for pick up. Not worth the bother I do not recommend.

I saw Yum Yum last week, and when I returned to the area, I thought I would check it out. It’s lunch time anyway.

I like it, clean, cozy, friendly service, and I ordered Chicken in black bean sauce with rice. My food arrived quickly, super hot, fresh and lots of chicken, this was great meal on a rainy day. If I had more time, i would have explored the menu but It will have to wait for my next visit.

I like their food, it cost under $8.35 before tip and will be back.

Recommend.

Best birthday dinner!
By paulwalker of north vancouver (1 Review)

My girlfriend took us to dinner to celebrate my birthday. This was the restaurant that I requested. Outside, the building doesn't look much to look at, but inside, the restaurant was quite nice, and elegant.
When I made the reservation, I mention about their famous spicy crab as I wasn't sure if I was suppose to order in advance. Luckily, I did.
We ordered 2 of their specialty dishes, crab and green beans and tofu & shredded celery. Plus the boiled beef. All 3 dishes were fantastic. I really enjoy their spicy crab. When they presented the live crab to me, I had to return the crab as I told them that we were not going to pay good money for a crab that was missing a leg.
I didn't rate the service high because I thought the wait staff were slow in refilling our teapot or replace our plates when it was pile with crab shells.
The food was a bit expensive, but it was well worth it. The four of us were happy with the quality of food. My girlfriend mention that she would like to come back to try out other items. Maybe on her upcoming birthday. This is the kind of place that I'd go for a special occasion.

this is a great place. The food is amazingly delicious and authentic - real and prepared with pride by the owner. Try their special green beans and authentic dishes- I've never had this before but it will be one of those dishes that I'll crave if I ever leave Vancouver. The menu is full of delicious dishes that never over powers the goodness of the ingredients.
I'm definitely going back!!!!

Service & what food?

I decided to order in, check it out, only wishing I read the reviews before walking in. I glance around, noticed the booth they gave me, had a rip in it, and started feeling it wasn't that clean.

The service is poor and this young lady lacked english & wasn't too sure what I had asked for on the menu. The other person, may have been the manager, translated and walked away annoyed. I was waiting for about 30 minutes, wasn't that busy for my food, and my food arrived cold. I looked at my non existant Won Ton Soup with only broth and cold, I tried to get my server, until the next dish arrived. This young lady, was flustered, & the rudeness of this manager helping her, insisting I didn't want Won Ton and only broth.

The service is bad, and left only paying for one dish, it took time for the manager to finally agree not to charge me for a soup that wasn't what I wanted.

Won't be back.

We paid $14 for 8 Chicken Balls. We're pretty sure it wasnt even chicken. It was pink in the middle and the only reason I ate it is because we all figured it was actually pork. I debated on phoning and demanding a refund but what a headache. We're just gonna chalk this up to a learning experience : Never eat here again.
Must say, the chow mein was decent, but not good enough to convince us to order from there again.

I ordered on their online order page and waited for my food to arrive......and waited....and waited.....and waited.

I finally called them and the girl attempting English tried to describe how the machine ran out of paper and they weren't able to process my order. Then she asked me if I'd like to order by phone instead and I said "no thank you".

I won't be their customer and by the looks of the food reviews, I think they may have done me a favour.

the wanton soup was very sad, i hate cheap wanton soup.. and the rest didn't blow me away either.

the waitress didn't know much english but that's not uncommon but the food just really cheapened up the whole experience.

not going to be returning...

Within a minute of stepping in this restaurant, I saw only 2 out of 10 tables with any sign of food on it, a couple left their table frustrated that they were not even greeted after an hour of sitting down, and another table furious that their food did not arrive within a hour of ordering.
Needless to say, I did not stay long either.

Yum Yum!!!

We have only ordered delivery from Yum Yum, and consistency problems aside (dishes don’t always taste the same), their food is pretty good. We've found it to be especially tasty on Friday and Saturday nights, so perhaps that's when the good chef is cooking!

Usually we steer clear of the appetizers, though their Crispy Spring Rolls are nice (they add a little hint of cinnamon or nutmeg ... not sure which) and their Mooshu Pork is excellent with a noticeable ginger flavor and lots of wood ear mushrooms (not sure why it’s listed as an appetizer, there’s enough to be an entree).

Deep fried prawns are good if you like fried things – definitely a homemade batter. Other standouts are Chicken with Chinese Broccoli, Black Pepper Beef, Double Cooked Sliced Pork with Garlic Pepper and Cabbage, Prawns with Curry Sauce and Fried Green Beans Szechwan Style.

Delivery is always prompt and within the time frame quoted, and phone manner is friendly and courteous.

Good Lunch Specials

Visited them on several occasions at their new location for lunch, I think they have some very good deals. You get a soup or spring roll, entree (chicken, beef, pork) with rice or noodles for under $8. Quite a lot of food and the quality is very good. I would think they are the best place on Lonsdale for Chinese Food. Ordering off the menu is good as well, many choices including dim sum. Can be a bit slow if they get busy but overall a good choice.

Conflicted says ...

I've eaten here just now, and once a couple of years ago.

I'll preface this review by saying I don't dine at chinese restaurants very often due to a myriad of poor service and cleanliness experiences at most of them.

So on my first visit to Yum Yum I was very pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness and friendliness.

The food I've had so far has been good enough. Nothing mind blowing, but that's probably just me not finding the interesting items on the menu yet as I'm not a chinese food expert.

Service, I am conflicted about. The staff are friendly, especially what I am guessing are the young owners. They don't seem jaded and seem to be putting a lot into the restaurant. That alone means a lot to me as most chinese places I visit make you feel like you are inconveniencing them with your visit.

Service on the first visit was great. Service on the second visit started out well but deteriorated as the evening went on. They present the dishes in a friendly way, pour your pop, your soup, place the dishes right in front of you, etc. My drink ran out and nobody came by for a while to check. We started dining a bit after 8 and were done by about 9:30 when the restaurant was winding down to close. While a number of people were still eating service seemed to grind to a halt as the staff all seemed more interested in counting up their tips for the night. After about 30 minutes with no bill in sight had to go up front to pay. You could see the other diners in the place wondering what was happening too. My advice is don't come near closing time. I think we were also overcharged but by that time just wanted to get out of there.

Ambience - the room is an open square but the decor is nice and it's clean. I'd give it 4 stars but have to take one off because it was way too hot in there. This was on a cool 20C summer day too. I'm not sure if they have A/C, if not, this place would get ridiculous on a hot day.
