inexpensive family dining

Mrs. C and I were entertaining some out of town relatives and they were craving sushi. I remembered a decent experience here a couple of years back, so I decided to take the clan to YM. The restaurant looked the same as before, with lots of comfortable booths, tables that weren’t jammed together, and a decent level of cleanliness, including in the w/c.

Service was somewhat patchy, but that was because there was only one server and she seemed to be assembling takeout orders in addition to her table-hopping duties. We got our orders promptly, so that was a plus.

Since there six of us at the table, we ordered a variety of rolls, some sashimi and some prawn tempura. Everyone seemed to like the sashimi, and although it was almost as big as a loaf of bread, the house roll was praised by most at the table. I thought it was tasty too, but way too big. The other rolls were just fine, but nothing really stood out. IMHO, the tempura was a little bit oily and it could have been hotter.

As for value, it was quite cheap, and we all got full for about 70 bucks. It wasn’t deluxe sushi or anything, but for the money I thought it was okay.

I have tried this place once for take out and tonight I ate my dinner there.

The food I really enjoyed, love their chicken teriyaki as it sizzles on the hot plate. I had tuna, salmon nigri & prawn ebi, and it was presented on this plate with lots of ginger & wasabi. When I came in, I was very hungry and thought I would have to order more, but I was full & took leftovers home with me. You will love the freshness, the presentation of the dishes, especially the chicken teriyaki and its not that expensive to eat there.

The service I wasn't impressed with on both occassion, and found one gal when I order out, was rude & blew me off. I chalked it up as they where busy and thought I would eat in the next time. When I ate there, my server didn't seem to care or bother to inquire about my meal. I had asked for rice for the chicken teriyaki, and my server made a rude remark and insult as not to finishing all my rice. When they served my coca cola in the can, I requested a glass with ice, and was annoyed when she returned with my request. Its too bad the service I received was rude towards the customer and if I return, it will be take out & call ahead.

On the plus side, I love their food, location is easy to get too, and its not expensive. I only hope their servers improve and become friendlier to their customers.

You get what you pay for ...

When I looked at the menu I was a bit shocked to see how low the prices were. Many box dinners in the $6-9 range. $5 for 18 pcs maki + Miso soup. I was expecting the place to be a bit more upscale but this is VERY budget sushi.

The food is about as good as you can expect given the prices, which in my mind, is not very good as far as sushi is concerned. The sushi rice was mushy. Fake crab obviously. No Daikon in tempura sauce (it's clear). You get a spring roll in your tempura (wasn't bad actually)! The tuna had a mushy texture. Basically this is the worst sushi I recall eating in 15 years, and I eat a lot of sushi. That said, it's still edible if you just want to fill up. It's just that most sushi places make pretty good sushi so this place is bad in comparison. The fried items weren't bad. The food resembles nothing close to authentic quality japanese food.

Service was efficient but not terribly warm. Can't expect more for these prices.

This place is very much like Sushi-man just down the road, but even a bit cheaper if that is possible as Sushi-man is already low budget. I'd way rather eat at Sushi-man as I think the sushi was a lot better there.

Anyway I won't be back as I expect a certain level of quality in my sushi, but if you don't mind budget sushi it might be an OK place to fill up. I would have actually given it only one or two stars overall but I'm cutting a lot of slack given bargain prices as you get what you pay for ...

It is what it is - decent extremely cheap sushi!

18 pieces of maki sushi and a miso soup for $5.95 in North Van... who can complain? And I'm not talking about the mini kappa (cucumber) rolls either - you get stuff like Spicy Shrimp Roll, Dynamite Roll, Cali Roll, Yam Tempura Roll, etc. It's a GREAT deal. You go to the Lonsdale Quay market, and the sushi joint there charges $4 for a spicy tuna roll that's equivalent to the size of four pieces at Yuko Maki (I'm not exaggerating).

It's not where you'd want to take a date, but for casual, cheap eats, it's fantastic. I work in the area so I come very often, but I wouldn't hesitate to drop by on a weekend either even though I don't live in North Van.

*I haven't tried any of the sashimi items yet, so I don't know the quality of their raw fish.

Cactus Club Look Out, Stiff New Competition Has Arrived...

Situated conveniently on Marine Drive in North Vancouver, the Yuko Maki offers unbeatable value in terms of the service and quality of food. For under $20, two can dine like kings, indulging in a variety of succulent rolls and box sets prepared masterfully in 10 minutes or less. It is obviously apparent as soon as you set foot in the door that the "eye candy" concept employed shamelessly by the likes of Cactus Club has been borrowed by this establishment. Yuko Maki has undoubtedly raised the bar in this highly competitive dining business in North Vancouver.

Great deal for North Vancouver

Excellent value, great prices, extra fresh food, really friendly staff. I often order take out from several restuarants in the area, and have found Yuko Maki to be the best value for the dollar. All the staff at our office are now ordering from Yuko Maki and are loving it. I have not yet sat down for lunch or dinner at their location, yet their staff is overly friendly when I come by. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone on the North Shore who is looking to have fresh sushi to try this restaurant. They have party trays that we have ordered for two functions.

Really Good Dynamite Rolls!
By gdresden of Kitsilano (2 Reviews)

So, my latest mister and I went out for sushi the other day and I wanted to take him to a place I knew (he took me out the next day, sort of a swap kind of deal, modern woman and all that) that was pretty cheap cause the two of us eat on a budget and there's this place and it's awesome.

You can usually get a seat (it's a big place and there lots of room) and the service is always really quick to get you seated but mostly there when you want a drink or are ready to place an order. And they're real good about that, taking your order, and the food comes out really quickly afterward.

And they do good, cheap sushi here. We each had the special (three different rolls) and split a soft shell crab (I'd never had one before but he thought it sounded cool and it totally was) as an appy. Their ambiance is kinda blah, but the quality of their food and their awesome prices more than makes up for it.

I ordered my usual, saving my dynamite roll for last. They do an awesome dynamite roll here. If you've never been you really should check it out!

You Cannot Beat The Value Here

Okay, this is going to be a short review.

5.95 gets you three roles or cones of your choice.
5.95 gets you a teryaki box (minus gyoza).
They bring you a decent amount of ginger etc. More if you ask.

Now, I walk out of this restaurant very full and very satisfied every single time. The service isn't amazing, but they get the job done, and if you flag them down, they help you out.

The food quality: pretty good considering all the other places I have been to in Vancouver/North Shore. And I mean, it really feels great to walk out full and happy for about $12.

Bottom Line: Go here, and be happy.
