Yaas Bazaar is a Persian restaurant and food shop.
I have never been to Iran so I cannot compare it as a Persian food. But I like the taste and size of their skewers. This might be a big size for seniors so they can have your next meal with leftovers.
The ventilation is not enough and tables should be cleaned immediately after each customer.
This restaurant-supermarket place is a nice place to experience if you live close to this area.
Went to Yass which is inside a grocery store. Cafeteria like setting where you order and wait for your number. Lunch time and there are many combo's. Most in the low teens. A bit expensive for lunch but the portions seem to be big. Had 2 meat kabobs, a good deal at $8 which includes rice, bread and pop. A lot of meat and quite good. Made right there when you order. Rice was nice and fluffy. Tried the lamb shank before and it was good as well. Good place for a quick and filling bite. Ambiance is Ok as you just sit in the store but outside seating during summer. Service is minimal.
I am so glad I discovered this place! For fast, tastey, "real", home-cooked style Persian food, check out this no frills cafe part of the Persian supermarket. I started with the "safe" choice of a platter with beef and lamb skewers with rice, salad and a roasted tomato. Then on other visits, I tried some of theirdaily special features (off-menu) like Persian spaghetti, lamb stew and chicken stew. It was all very good.
The best part? A drink and bread comes free with your meal.
Another Bonus: there is a bread they put on the bottom part of the rice as it cooks that hardens and becomes this wonderful buttery crunch that goes great with the meals... they usually give it to you if available at no extra cost, or ask to see if they have it.
This place is always packed and there's a good reason. It's just a deli section part of the grocery store, so forget about ambiance.
Despite that, it's still some of the finer Persian dishes we've had here (though the downside is that the menu isn't extensive).
The koobideh is very flavourful and juicy, maybe the best in town. Gormeh sabze is good too. After a few tries it got really addictive. Usually the roast lamb stew is also a good bet. And with those prices, it's a pretty fantastic deal. You can easily squeeze in at $6-8 and be quite full.
It's sometimes hard to get a seat there, so grab some takeout in that case. I'm just drooling thinking about their koobideh, sure beats a Big Mac meal anyday.
If you've never tried Persian food, it's a pretty non-intimidating place to have a go. We've found the server/cashiers always helpful and friendly. If yuo're a pro, this is still a great place to satisfy that hankering for some good Persian eats. Bakery there is not bad either!
The Yaas restaurant is in the Iranian supermarket of the same name. It has a huge steam table and so you can point and instantly get the dish you want. The best one is the lamb, which comes with a savoury sauce. There is little in the way of ambience with uncomfortable bench seating inside and a little patio outside (a better choice). The staff are friendly, but the place is packed most of the time, so there is some jostling as part of the ordering experience.
If you want a quick introduction to Iranian culture and cuisine, this place is for you. Try the nearby bakery section.
Popular with the locals.
After passing this place many times but never going inside I finally decided to try it out and was pleasantly surprised! The food is served cafeteria style so you can see everything that's going on/being made and there are many affordable specials that will fill you up and not drain your wallet. I usually get the ground beef/lamb Kabob combo or chicken Kabob combo, For just over $6 you get your meat, huge portion of delicious rice, BBQ tomato as well as bread and a pop! The food has always been fresh and cooked just right and the amount of food for the money cannot be matched anywhere on the North Shore. I don't think it is fair to comment on ambiance for this place as it is not a sit down restaurant (you can sit at long tables and eat in if you like) but the floors tables and everything else are very clean. If you are looking for a tasty meal that will fill you up at a good price you must give Yaas a try.
The food here is decent, especially since it's paradoxically hard to find good (or any) Persian food in Vancouver nowadays.
However, it's too expensive for the ambiance and type of meal it is. It should be $6-$10, not in the $10-$20 range.
The store itself is fairly priced, and a good place to try out Persian foods and deserts.
I have never been to this restaurant before and will never go back.
I like many people this day (over heard "I've never been here before") tried it out for the first time. And given that there was no longer a crowd North Vancouver Persians eating there I should have taken this as a hint not to eat there.
It use to busy and now not so much and I'll tell you why.
I ordered the Lamb Kabob and rice ($10.00) and received a dog bone (well I would be embarrassed to give this bone to my dog) and dry rice and a hard burnt rice. These were not Kabobs (two skewers with five pieces of meat on each one) as in the photo and what one would expect but a lamb leg joint with little meat and much joint cartilage yummmmm.
I asked for a take out container as I was going to just eat a bit there and take the rest for later so I guess she thought that I would not find out how they screwed me until I got home. But as I sat down she kepted on asking me if I was going to take it home and looking sheepishly at me with a bit of worry on her face.
I guess most people would not take that bone and call it a meal. But here I am telling you what happened to me that you may save your money,
The rest of the take out container was rice. I think it was meant to have some flavour to it but it didn't. And the best part was the hard as a rock burnt rice to break your teeth on chwn toy She told me that this was the best part. Thanks not saying much.
But it did come with a drink and you needed this to wash down the dry rice.
It was good at one time just by judging by the number of customers that I have seen there in the past but not any more.
The other food in the hot boxes was some sort of veggie slop that didn't look that great. It might be something that they eat all the time but not for this cowboy. The prices were high for what you get.
All that I wanted was a meat two veggie and a carb at a good price. And what I got was a dog bone and dry rice and a chew toy.
Coming into North Vancouver there are alot of persian resturaunts to choose from, but i would definetely reccommend Yaas Baazar. They have different combos to choose from and the price is reasonable because it comes with rice, a drink , and bread. So if you're trying to find a good persian place to dine, I would reccommend Yaas Baazar.
Bazaar is agood description. a bit of this that and the other mishmashed... picture deli style restaurant perched inside a grocery store. The food is very tasty and although it suffers from long lineups its worth it. I recently noticed that the prices on most chicken lamb and beef dishes have jumped by 2 or 3 $ a meal but its still deliscious and the fact that a lot of Iranians eat there is a testament to the good authentic flavors. The staff is friendly and will help you in English. What most non Iranians often miss is that you need to take the bread from the basket near the cash register for your meal as it is included and each meal also comes with a pop or water included which are waiting for you in a beverage fridge just to the right of the cash register. These 2 additional things help bring the value into the picture when you eat here. if your new to this restaurant order the kebob and rise or kebob and salad with a pop and bread and for 8$ you will see why this is great value for the money.
This place used to be pretty good, but lately the kebobs are uncooked and the salads are way too mayonaisy.
Look around, for a Persian restaurant it has a disproportionate number of non-persians. That's because they can't tell the difference.
I stopped eating there a while ago and on the ocassion I ended up forgetting my boycott, I remembered very quickly why I don't eat there anymore.
The quality went down as soon as they got a clientel I guess.
Husband's co-worker recommended Yaas. Went all the way to North Van to try their eggplant dish and others. Place was crowded probably the usual during weekends. Food was great but service particularly at the cash - grocery side was not friendly at all (even the snooty ladies in the line-up behind me)! Maybe we stuck out like sore thumbs - Asian lady with her Caucasian husband. Will not come back here at all.
