Serving the famous Wally's Burger family of burgers including the Deluxe Chuck Wagon, The Beefy Boy and the Combo burger.
Mrs. C and I were in Cates Park enjoying the sun and looking at the giant refinery across the the inlet, and we decided to give the resurrected Wally's a try. Some guy bought the name and according to the North Shore News he is planning a string of fake Wally's across the city. Let's face it, the old Wally's was pretty bad near the end, and nothing like its glory days. This version was worse.
The newest incarnation is in the old Cates Park concession stand. It was not super-clean and the w/c's were horrific. The servers seemed semi-awake, but orders took forever, and there were a few angry faces among the people waiting for food. They have basically used the names of the old Wally's menu items, but they are really nothing like their namesakes. One new addition was yam fries at $4.00 for a really small side order. A can of pop cost $2.50. It was shameful value for the money.
We had a deluxe chuck wagon, a combo burger, and we shared a side of yam fries. The food itself was awful, and we felt totally ripped off.
They should have left Wally in his grave.
I agree with much of what has been said so far. Service is underwhelming, to say the least. The younger staff seems disengaged, lethargic, bored.
Another problem is consistency. On a recent evening, I was told to get lost (for food), as the kitchen appeared to be closing early. Huh? More recently, the joint ran out of chocolate ice cream! So much for a shake (at least a good one) with my sandwich.
On the other hand, I thought their poutine was pretty darn good.
So come on Wally's, get it together, before I too join this chorus of boobirds and abandon you for good!
I love a good cheese burger once in awhile and in my honest opinion,, Wally's Burgers at Cates Park in North Vancouver is a winner. It is only there in the summer months ( whether pending ) however a great tasting hamburger. Staff on site were friendly, a clean place, and various burger / food choices,,,, after all it is a hamburger joint, and a good one. Also at the Cates Park location you get a great,, in your face view of the ocean and coastal scenery. Thumbs up for Wally's,, and Lord willing I will be back soon. by Allan Cassidy.
Wally's burger Cates Park.
The only reason that Wally's burger in Cates Park will still be in business one years from now is that they have a monopoly on the location. You could call it “Give us your money and we'll give you some burger like substance and you will like it Burger”
I went to Wally's burger Kingsway many years ago hearing from a friend that it's the place to go on a Saturday night. OK I”ll try it. Yuck! So what made me think that the concession stand at Cates park serving Wally's burgers would be any different? Stupid Stupid Stupid Stupid. And worse yet I took a friend! I'm sooooo sorry!
As we parked we smelt some wonderful flavorful charcoal BBQ coming from the concession stand area and thought that this must be what we will soon be tasting. We were sooooo wrong.
What we got was one step above prison food. So I hear. The burgers are made out of steakettes with no flavour, no juices and texture akin to shoe leather. The bun had a stale frozen flavour to it and it was still cold from just coming out of the freezer not long before. I guess they see no reason to try to mitigate this stale texture and flavour. They have monopoly after all. This was a Wally deluxe burger that was suppose to have lettuce and tomato and onions on it. I'm glad the sign board told me this as they must be using a Ginsu knife to slice the tomato and lettuce as I could not tell when I was eating it that there was any tomato and lettuce at all. And the only reason that I knew there were onions on the burger was that they were falling onto my lap. All three chips of onion.
The hot dog that my friend had was no better. You see them putting frozen wieners onto one of those 7-11 rotating hot dog cookers to thaw out. And when ordered one they place it onto the flat grill and slit them to place the plastic cheese inside. One bite and she knew she made a mistake . I tried it and she was right. What a waste of food to treat it this way.
And in the end it took 20 minutes to get our food! I should have paid the guy with the charcoal grill 20 feet from Wally's 10 bucks for what looked like and definitely smelt like wonderful burgers. Stupid Stupid Stupid Stupid!
Here are a couple of suggestions that will help out any owner of a concession stand.
Since you are dealing with most likely non-regular customers it's best to have a sign up directing people to the order and pick-up windows. And if you are in a park you could have a charcoal grill with fresh meat and grilled onions warmed buns and all at a reasonable price. Stupid Stupid Stupid Stupid.
I guess the other reviewers are more used to having hamburgers on silver platters with black truffle mayo at the Four Seasons. Hey kids, it a burger place in the park ! I went to the original Wally's many a night after too many beers so am not qualified to say whether the original Wally's was good or bad. I like the Cates Park version - a nice burger at a fair price. Yes, you have to line up to place an order because there are no white linen covered tables - just a few picnic benches.
I went back a second time to make sure and I liked it just a much the second time as the first. I will go back - so let that statement stand as my review !
As for the other reviewers - I'll look for you having your deluxe burgers on a silver platter at the Pan Pacific Hotel - or most likely, getting your hamburger delivered through your car window.
I have to say that this site is wonderful and many of the reviews are spot on.
The two post below have got it right. Wally's Burgers is a place to avoid. bad food and high prices. I feel the reason is the staff. My burger had all the makings of a good one, but the meat was over cooked and the bread was still frozen. If well managed this would not have happened.
It is very interesting to note that this place got a fantastic review from the North Shore News food critic resently - This critic really got it wrong and I have to say the reviews on this site are doing a much better job than she is. In fact, she has gotten it wrong on many occasions. I from now on will avoid her reviews and only go by Dinehere. I think we should get Chaisbow as the new critic for the North Shore News.
