I found out about Thomas Haas from this website because it is one of the most highly rated places so I decided to head out to north vancouver to give it a try. I ordered a cappuccino - $3.25, 4 of their individual desserts to take home - $22 and a box of 18 chocolates - $30.. for a total of $61.88
My experience.. The place is kind of tucked away once finding it I enter and it's crowded (went on a saturday afternoon) There's nowhere to really stand, there are people sitting along the window enjoying a coffee with the line up kind of bumping into/squeezing past them. Not the most comfortable place to dine in. Actually I felt very uncomfortable being in there and would never stay there to eat and drink unless the place was empty. The tight crowded space is my only complaint.
The service was very professional and friendly.
The cappuccino - WOW.. what have I been drinking all the other times that I order a cappuccino at the popular coffee spots? This is the best cappuccino I have ever drank out of a cardboard cup!
The desserts - I had them with my wife and were very good.. Next time we go to a dinner I think we will supply the dessert from here -) She loved the "caramel & chocolate brownie cake"
The chocolates/truffles - I had a selection and was impressed, I loved the "merlot" with a nice chocolate/wine taste. Also the "marc de champagne" was nice (milk chocolate gnache perfumed with champagne and eau de vie from champagne grapes.
Overall, if you are looking for an excellent coffee/dessert spot you must try this one out.
This place has the best desserts hands down, in comparison to Thierry's..this place is the best. They always have everything available once they open, like cakes, macaroons, chocolates, etc. The coffee is fantastic, its a very nice blend, its not bitter, and its never burnt. However, they can improve on the service. Most of the servers that work here have a "So what do you want? And now get the hell out" kind of attitude, they are attentive for the most part, but they are never friendly, and they seem annoyed all the time. What I find most strange is that you first place an order for say, a box of 12 macaroons, and then you tell the server that you want to pick your own flavours. You then stand on the side, and wait until a server calls your name. When the server calls your name, you go back to the counter, however, you have to push and shove your way through the counter, because there are always crowds of people just standing there waiting to be served, just to pick your flavours. I really do not understand why the customer cannot just tell the server the flavours that they want when they order. They make it more complicated than it really is.
My friend and I decided to come and indulge ourselves at Thomas Haas after doing the Grouse Grind on the weekend. It was located by the water, kind of in an industrial area. It was a little hard to find at first, but we were able to locate it.
It was a hot day, so I decided to go with an iced latte and a cassis chocolate mousse dessert. My friend went with an americano and their passionfruit tart with blueberries. I had such a hard time deciding which dessert to try because everything just looked so delicious and tempting.
The iced latte was cold and quite strong, just to my liking. It was a real treat to my throat on such a hot day. The mousse cake was a delight to look it, shaped like a dome and decorated with little chocolate squares on the side and on top. It was very refreshing, and I enjoyed every bite.
I also got to try my friend's passionfruit tart with blueberries on top. Very, very nice, surprisingly light and we both loved the shortbread crust.
The dessert was a little small compare to the price, but definitely worth every penny and would go back to try more!!
It was only a matter of time before I came here, and on a hot weekday it was time. Parking is a bit of a hassle though there is a lengthly wind of street parking available.
Plenty of customers whispering oohs and aahs from peering at the display case to those smuggishly taking a bite of their delights; the selection doesn't overwhelm you but there are enough choices to make it difficult to pick. The Champagne Truffle was the richest of the 3 with a smooth, velvety ganache. The Almond Mascapone was a tiramisu, enhanced with a light, moist almond cake. The Creme Brule (sans hard caramel top) was as silky and creamy as they come, complete with bits of vanilla at the bottom. I knew I couldn't make it back to the car without something to nibble on, the Double Baked Almond Croissant? Yes! It seemed steep that I paid $3.75 for a crescent roll but that initial bite nearly buckled my knees. Warm, rich, buttery, flaky layers with an equally amazing almond cream center. Those toasted almonds coated on the outside are one of the few instances where nuts and pastries go together so well.
Lineups are a sure thing it seems, but the service is up to task with a little simple ingenuity of having different staff focussing solely on a specific task at hand. One staff at the cashier, one taking orders and one assembling the order. Win. Another notch? Adding a piece of tape to the bottom of each dessert portion inside the takeout box to prevent a pastry crash. Genius.
TH makes the minimal space as inviting as it could be, with the chocolates and pastries center stage.
You can't pinch pennies here, though why would you? Did I mention the croissant?
Mrs. C and I were cruising near the Auto Mall and we decided to give this place a try. It looked nice inside but the patio was very dirty and congested. Service was excellent and we were actually served by Lisa (Mrs. Haas). In fact, the great baker himself was in attendance and he greeted the throng of customers seeking sweet satisfaction. We shared fussy coffees and a piece of mascarpone/almond tiramisu. Of course everything was tasty, but wow it sure was expensive! For example, the aforementioned thin piece of tiramisu was about 2x2 inches, and cost $5.25.
It seemed odd to find this place in an industrial park, but I am told the wholesale baking operation is located here, so I guess it makes sense. We will be back soon, if only to defy the current economy :)
Yeah, so he is a famous chocolatier. But this place also churns out some rather fine pastries and desserts. And it isn't just in name only, all but one time, we see Thomas himself working and making the rounds.
The chocolates are good, very good. I would rate it one of the top 3 in town (each of the top 3 have a different style, so hard to compare exactly, but I would rate Shokolade, Chocolate Arts and Thomas Haas).
The pastries and desserts? Oh yes, super yum. It's downright good. He's famous for a reason. And when you add in the price? (Which is comparable to what you find in Safeway/Superstore, etc), that's unbeatable.
The chocolate sparkle cookies are ... I don't know what they are but they are incredible. It's worth the trip just to experience these morsels.
Recommended? Are you kidding? Mandatory! You get some of the best stuff in the world from a famous chef for such low prices?
If you don't go, you don't deserve to call yourself a foodie.
My first piece of Thomas Haas chocolate was a gift from work, after the first bite I knew I had fallen in love with their fine chocolate, as soon as the new Kitslano location opened I was jumping for joy becuase North Van was just too far for me! They have a great selection here. I tried the Raspberry, Caramel, Crispy Hazelnut, and Matcha chocolate bar, loved this handmade white chocolate with matcha green tea bar!! Everything I've tried so far is delicious! Also had the Raspberry Cake, it was really yummy!
Absolutely LOVE their freshly housemade chocolate truffle varieties. Delicious! You can buy them loose here (bagged, not gift-boxed) for less by the piece while downtown at Sen5es, it costs more though the packaging downtown is prettier, including the pretty Sen5es glossy gift/takeout bag. But this is where the kitchen's at & with plenty more personal service. There are some seating for those of you who like to eat in while enjoying a cup of tea or coffee.
The double-baked almond croissants are delicious! The various chocolate truffles are mouthwateringly addictive! The lemon tart, though perfectly delicious at Sen5es seems a notch above perfection coming direct from this cafe/outlet store! And then there are other tasty chocolate tarts and various seasonal items. All good!
I like this little hidden away location as it's quite peaceful though oddly situated but not enough to keep chocoholics & sweets lovers away!
I'm a big big fan. It's not a great location, but the croissants make it worth the effort to the middle of no where. It didn't seem to deter the dozens of people that were in there either. Thomas and his wife were there, putting in their personal touches, talking to people. I admire a couple that's willing to get their hands dirty and meet their clientele. Enjoyable.
This has got to be the best Dessert place in the Lower Mainland. This place is packed all the time.
In addition to the desserts, I have ordered several large tarts as a special order and each time was not disappointed. The service is efficient and the employees are friendly.
The prices are expensive compared to the typical dessert restaurant but it is well worth it. I bring family & friends here all the time and they rave about it each time. The desserts are done with fine detail and each type of dessert makes you want more. The other orders (sandwiches) aren't bad either.
It is not centrally located and need a car to get there, but it is well worth it. Considering the quality of the food, this place is not over priced and well worth going to.
Everything is so beautiful in this store. It was very busy, but there were lots of staff who were very friendly. Love love loved the Crispy Hazelnut chocolate- a beautifully crunchy mix. The butter croissant was nice and crispy with the right amount of butter flavour and surprisingly not greasy. Can't wait to go back and try some more creations!
After a long hiatus due to traveling and business we finally made our way back to T.H. this morning for breakfast and to stock up on chocolate and pastries for the week. As usual, it was crazy busy by the time we got there but the line always moves very quickly and efficiently. As much as I esteem the last reviewer, I must disagree that the prices are expensive. For the quality and presentation of these creations, I believe the prices are quite reasonable. We ate out on the small patio this morning and did not find it to be messy.
We had the almond croissant, Yum! Filled with marizipan and covered in toasted almond..... melts in your mouth with the flakiness of the pastry and the toastiness of the almond.... in the words of my husband, yum yum yum!!!! I must admit that the americano / cappucino that we order also are amazing. This is my favorite place to get coffee other than the amazing coffee my husband makes at home from the beans we buy from here and from Parallel 49 coffee co.
We got our usual assortment of pastries and chocolate for the weekend and what a wonderful way to end our afternoon meals during the WE.
There was a sample sale next door and we were informed that Thomas was expanding into this space in the next little while. This is greatly anticipated by T.H. fans since it hopefully means more space for seating and the ever present line-ups.
i recently ordered a cake from TH and it was delicious BUT..almost 30 bucks for a cake that barely fed 5 people (and no leftovers) is pretty steep...that being said, it was a beautiful cake and if i get a lot richer i will make this my regular bakery (their chocolates are good too-waaay better than DanielLeChocolat, i have to say.) Just a really nice place--but mighty $$$$ !!
I have been to Thomas Haas a few times. The coffee, chocolates and pastries are so delicious. The service here is a tad bit slow but the staff are always pleasant. The prices are a little bit more expensive than your normal coffee/sandwich shop but the food is great. The location is odd, inside an industrial area, the cafe itself is small and cramped especially when its busy. Overall I really like this place and will return.
I've been wanting to try Thomas Haas's chocolates and cakes for a long long time. I finally had the chance the other day, and four cakes, and the chocolates:
- Noisette: my personal favourite. The sweet walnuts worked wonderfully, and the caramel wasn't overpowering as I usually find in chocolates
- Passion fruit with tahitian vanilla: Fruits+chocolate are not my favourite combination. I make an exception with this. Creamy, fruity, yet not too sweet. Love.
- Earl Grey Tea: The dark chocolate wasn't overly bitter, the tea flavour was pleasant. Something one should try, but not my personal favourite.
- Crispy Hazelnut: A very safe choice for the picky palette. My friend described it as a luxurious kit-kat.
Amazing sweets. The cakes tasted fresh, and created with care. I am not usually a fan of creams due to how heavy and artificial they can taste, but they worked wonderfully here. Tried two nut themed cakes (hazelnut and walnut I believe..) and two fruit themed cakes (I can not remember what they were.. But they were wonderful. Dome shaped, one was green layered with cherries inside, the other purple/pink.)
The cappuccino and green tea matcha latte were decent as well. Although, at least on our cups, the coffee art was a little sloppy. But-- that doesn't effect taste so.
The people at the counter were nice enough to put up with our indecisiveness, and explained things fairly well.
Value is what you would expect from an expensive place such as this. I paid $5~ for four tiny chocolates. But hey. It was worth it.
Ambiance is cute. I liked the beehive wood pattern on the ceiling.
My only disappointment?: I came their specifically for the double baked almond croissant, however, as I went at about 4pm, they were all sold out. D<... Go early if you want to sample their full selection.
After hearing all the good reviews, I finally tried some cakes from Thomas Haas.
The chocolate hazelnut cake with mango cream was pretty good.
However, the raspberry (and blueberry?) cake tasted very strange, and I even felt little sick after eating it.
I prefer Ganache in Yeletown much better.
I watched "Anna's and Nicole's Grocery Bag" and saw him feautured as the guest chef/critic and I was intrigued and curious because I never heard of him before since I tend to stay in Vancouver for my dining needs, so I decided to finally venture off to North Vancouver. The location is kind of obscure and right beside a high school and I can't help but wonder how much weight gain this place is responsible for in the young adults at Bodwell High School. I was really there for the chocolate croissant, but unfortunately they ran out. However, I had the almost croissant and I've never had a criossant quite like that. It was very flavorful. There wasn't a big cake collection and not many that seemed appealing to me. I had the champagne chocolate cake, the mascarpone cake that's pretty much tiramisu, the berry cheesecake and the the hazelnut praline cake. Everyone that tried my champagne slice said they could really taste the champage. I prefer hazelnut cakes with more chocolatey flavors, however, one of my friends really enjoyed the hazelnut cake. The cheesecake was rich, but I've had better. The mascarpone was normal to me. I prefer Ganache Patisserie in Yaletown and wouldn't make the trip to Thomas Haas unless it was along the way.
This is an absolutely classy, delicious, and marvelous place! I bought a champagne truffle cake for my mom's birthday, and she and everyone else who ate it were absolutely impressed with the quality, detail, and elegance of the flavours. Following that experience, we have made several more trips back to Thomas' shop even though it is a bit of a drive for us. Since then, I have discovered other stand out items. The Chocolate Sparkle cookies was absolutely DIVINE - the chocolate intensity is intoxicating and the texture, melt in your mouth. The doube baked Almond Croissant is loved by all, and is generously topped with almonds and filled with almond cream. I have also tried their sandwiches and they are lovely as well - high quality ingredients, perfect textures. I think it's all because of Thomas' vision and standards - the guy's got TASTE and it transcends to every item in the store. The only suggestion I would have is to provide more chocolate themed pastries - there is the pain au chocolat, but perhaps something more exciting can be created? But anyways, this is my FAVOURITE dessert/patisserie hands down. Brave Thomas Haas and team!
This is, in my opinion, the best chocolate shop Vancouver has to offer to visitors and local residents. The chocolates and the way they're made are definitely deeply rooted from Belgium's 'Ganache' style. Ganache is soft, not so sweet, creamy and high in flavor. Rarely do we find chocolate that is high in flavor and low on sugar because to do that, the pastry chef MUST have excellent knowledge and know where to find the beans of both cocoa and coffee.
Personally, the reason I visit Thomas Haa's place is for their desserts because it's packed with flavor and not just sugar. In fact I find they use flavor to make the desserts taste good rather than most places who put a heavy emphasis on cream and sugar and hope those dual ingredients will carry them to stardom - although those two ingredients are essential nonetheless.
This place is aimed at high class folks so don't expect cheap stuff here. For what you spend and what you get, the value is almost at the fair mark. Most of the essential ingredients that they use are indeed imported and I can taste it. Don't expect to get anything cheap at this place.
Service-wise, since this isn't a restaurant, but a patisserie and cafe, I'd say service is mediocre although they do try their best to make you feel special - ex, calling you by name and always giving out that very superficial smile...
The place decor is also nothing to remember about, simple, clean and lots of metallic minimalism.
I've been a avid and long fan of Thomas's creations so I always return for more - both for the traditional and the new.
Food: High end desserts. Beautiful and delicious creations. Artists at work.
My favourite so far has been the lemon tart, raspberry soufle', chocolate croissant and triple chocolate dessert.
Service: Great service. Eventhough you have to line up occasionally the servers are fast and eager to help. Ocassionally Thomas himself comes out to take orders and make suggestions. Small place so most likely you'll have to wait for a seat or eat in the adjacent park.
Value : $5 for an artists creations( Note this is for one small pastry), i'm sold.
Ambiance: Again beautiful desserts diplayed at eye level and the smells of chocolate takes me to heaven and back.
Overall: If you love dessert and appreciate food contruction - Go see Thomas at your earliest convenience.
