Taylor's Crossing isn't the place for you to get smashed or pick up chicks. What it is, is a family restaurant that happens to serve some excellent beer, and offer a less kitschy experience than a Red Robin, but also a less trendy experience than say a Cactus Club. The prices are reasonable for what you get, and I've had no problems with the service.
The food has been consistently satisfying whenever I've gone there, but if you insist on playing it safe, I recommend going there for a pitcher of beer, and a simple order of typical pub food (chicken wings, fries, nachos etc.)
This place is hit or miss for all of the above categories. I've been there many, many times because of hockey. If they open up the upstairs, this place rocks for watching hockey. Otherwise, this place is just your sub-par restaurant with snobby waitresses and unpredictable food. I've noticed that the male servers are way friendlier than the ladies...why?? The only half-decent dish that this restaurant serves is the Ginger Fried Rice, otherwise you might as well pick red or black at the roulette wheel.
I had the Chicken wok curry, they should have called it raw pepper curry. The sauce was a strange consistency, the chicken was lacking and what was there was poor quality.
The beer was good and the recommendations of the server was correct, but the food really let them down.
Wont be returning.
A friend from out of town on business and myself met here last night. I'd not been here in over a year and had forgotten what a pleasant place this is for a meal and a chat. I'd the four cheese pizza which was delicious and my friend had the Thai Noodle salad which she LOVED. We sat by the fireplace and were attended to by a sweet young waiter who was very helpful but for the fact that he had difficulty making food suggestions for us as he appears to love all the food served here!! We'd a good laugh with him.
Thanks to the previous review (by bliss) for suggesting this might be a safe place to go with kids! Finally, an alternative to Boston Pizza, Red Robin and Kelsey's.
First, for adults - it's a brew pub, so beer is good. The red truck is the house brew, and I'd recommend the ale. For food, wife ordered pasta, I had pizza - no complaints. Good stuff. Atmosphere is nice as well - upper end brew pub.
For kids - hostess provides cute "chinese take-out" style loot boxes with crayons and bendable twisty stick things the kids (ours are 5 and 2) had fun playing with. Definitely a step above the typical crayons and colouring menus. Then, to our surprise, a roaming magician came by and did a couple coin tricks (I couldn't figure out how he did them) and made two balloon animals for the kids. (We were there on a Friday, not sure if he's there every night).
One tip: If it's a cold night, ask for table far from the entrance. We didn't and were quite chilly as people came in and out.
Bottom line - this was only our first visit, but Taylor's Crossing could easily become our #1 choice on the shore. Good beer, decent food, entertainment for the kids. This really is a family friendly brew pub.
Good size portions, served without a long wait. Glorius beans with oyster sauce! Unfortunatley the ginger beef had been cooked so much there was no meat- just crispy strips.Everything else was so good that it wasn't a big deal. Our server was friendly, and available without being intrusive. Overall a good experience.
I was horrified to go for a beer and grub with adult friends, only to be met with a swarming sea of children having a McDonald's type party. Earsplitting noise, screaming children, magicians circulating! Yuck! It's obvious they are trying to expand their clientelle by appealling to the family crowd, but for crying out loud, this is a BREW PUB! I am getting tired of the overly family friendly nature of some North Shore eating establishments. When I choose to eat out and pay good money, I do not want to be bothered by screaming children running up and down the aisles! Especially at a Brew Pub. They better make up their minds as to who their target clientelle is. I am reluctant to go back after that experience!
Haven't been to Taylor's Crossing in about four years. The first time wasn't worthy of returning but we decided to give it a try as my fellow diner had also been there before and did not care for the food et al. However, our second experience was surprisingly good with an early dinner before a movie.
The 5 Chees Pizza was good value - the ingredients were of decent quality and the portions large. My fellow diner had Halibut and Chips which was apparenlty one of the better samplings of fish and chips they had been served at a restaurant.
Service was the best part of the dining experience. Although it was quiet, the servers made an effort to be attentive, prompt and courteous. And, the ambiance was casual and relaxed.
The only minus is the decor - it has seen better days and looks dated and worn (I noticed on the way out that the hardwood floors were in dire need of refinishing).
Overall, we enjoyed our dinner and would return to try other menu items.
My husband and I were at the restaurant and both of us had special orders. The manager, Jodi, as well as the waiter were extremely accommodating. The salad, was fresh, crisp and very tasty. The grilled chicken done to perfection. My husband's dish was above and beyond what he expected. The wine and beer excellent. The staff went out of there way to make it a very relaxing wonderful experience for us. We will be back!
I agree they need a menu redo. Someone please show this site to mgmt! The beer is absolutely great and the squid is the reason I still eat there, but dinner is a perpetual disappointment. The wok dishes are lacking. The chef's creation menu they offer changes frequently, but everytime i order from it i get a tiny portion for an entree. Also, it is family friendly, so if you don't like rugrats (the screaming kind) don't go until after 8. Families should feel at home earlier than that. Service is standard, with the occasional bright star of a server, and the odd dud.
This place is a marvel of decor and atmosphere. You can tell a lot of money was spent, that's for sure. Indeed there must be a lot of money available in the Mark James empire to go through two complete makeovers and actually close the whole place for an entire season to do the last one! The result was impressive, and I love it.
Now if only they'd spent a fraction of that $ on a menu makeover. I was shocked to find the menu unchanged after all that. Don't get me wrong; nothing is actually "bad". But there's no real variety. The pizzas are quite good, to be fair. Thin crust, interesting combos, although the center of the crust tends to be a bit soggy. The spicy calamari is a winner. But almost everything else is the same old Asian fusion that's everywhere these days. Wok dishes mostly. Not very original. I'd be there a lot more often if there was some variety. The wine list was greatly improved recently. Thanks guys, for acknowledging those of us who don't drink beer with everything from brunch to snacks.
Service is satisfactory, with some individuals who are really great. I'm still a regular visitor, but primarily for the atmosphere.
I remember trying the Avalon, what is now Taylor's Crossing a few times over several years. It was ALWAYS terrible. It consistently had terrible food. We basically tried it once every year, only reason we gave it that much of a chance is because it was right next door to where we lived at the time.
So, when they closed down the Avalon and did a million dollar renovation and reopened as Taylor's Crossing, we thought we'd try it again. Well, the food was still absolutely terrible. When we tried it some of the corporate head office people were there. And they were proud how they kept the same chef from the Avalon.
Now, I dont claim to be smart, but you have a restaurant with a reputation for terrible food, you decide to change it, spend over a million dollars in renovations, and not only keep the same menu, but the same chef???? Are these people stupid?
Well, unless we hear of a change of hands, and a new chef and new menu, we will never return to this horrible restaurant again!
My husband and I go here pretty often. The restuarant side is a little pricey on a regular night but if you go there for Wok Wednesday or Pizza Sunday it's a pretty good deal and the food is excellent. They brew their own beer and the seasonal beer has consistently been very good. They have a nice outdoor patio in the summer time. The pub side is cozy and the menu is cheaper and more casual - you can also get the Pun menu on the restaurant side if you ask.
First time and last time visiting Taylor's Crossing Restaurant / Bar. I don't ask for much when it comes to service, but being given dirty looks for not ordering alcohol and having to wait 45 minutes for menus while being the second couple arriving for the big hockey game was very aggrivating. I am one to praise for good service and hardly one to complain when given bad service. This was the worst service I had ever had and thats no exaggeration. When I searched to find a non existant mailing address to write to the Manager of Taylors Crossing, I find myself suprised to see its owned by a chain of restuarants ie. Yaletown Brew Pub where I have also recieved horrible service from waitresses that can't do their jobs and have the "we don't really need your business enough to care much about our job" attitudes. I know one bad seed don't spoil the whole bunch...but as my first impression, I do feel waitresses should at least be friendly, and be encouraging to try to welcome return business. If I owned this place I wouldn't want even one bad seed working there.
Horrible.
Another Mark James Restaurant (always creative and interesting).
The vedgie pizza and spicy green beans are great. Sundays pizza and beer are 1/2 price, it's a great deal. Nice little pub that's attached to the restaurant. The decor is nicely done inside and out with a good patio in the back with fireplaces and fountain. The only thing I don't like it the huge smokers area. They are off in their own space, but's kind of gross to watch them in their pen smoking away and when the doors open into the pub, the smoke comes wafting in. Otherwise upbeat servers and friendly atmosphere with good food and drink at descent prices.
