Checked out the Quay and was craving something sweet to have with a coffee. I spotted this bakery, but there was literally no-one attending the counter. Went for a short walk, browsing the Quay and returned .. still no one. Went for another short walk and returned to find an disinterested Asian man behind the counter.
I asked if the Diplomat Cakes were made with real butter. The man did not seem to understand me at first. I asked again. He said, "Yes. Butter."
I bought a slice for $3.25 plus tax. I ate it at the tables near the window with the nice view of Vancouver.
I should have just had a coffee and thrown the $3.25 into the water fountain outside. It was the worst Diplomat cake I have ever had. It had ZERO flavour. If butter was used in the frosting - it would have been 0.01% added to shortening. I didn't taste any buttery flavour at all. It tasted like nothing.
Gross. Never again.
I was on my usual quest for the perfect cookie when I spotted this place. Mrs. Chasiubow often orders cakes from here, but I have never sampled their other treats. The place is nice and clean, and the owner is very friendly and speaks Cantonese. These attributes are important to Mrs. C, but I tend to focus more on the food. This time around I saw that they had a fresh batch of shortbread cookies. I decided on a raspberry one, and for a buck I bought a ticket to paradise. It was light and flavorful and buttery. Yum!
Good for a tasty sugar fix.
This "stall" in the Lonsdale Quay Market serves a variety of sweet baked goods, but the reason I go there is the amazing pavlova. Light and sweet, with a generous helping of whipped cream and fresh fruits (kiwi, strawberry, peach), I can't get enough. At about three dollars for the "individual" size, they're a bargain for a great dessert. The service is decent, and if they don't have it ready in the display cooler they will prepare it for you while you wait.
There is also an "eat in" option in that there is common seating down the hall which is shared between all of the food booths in the Market.
I haven't been here in a couple years because it's a little far for me, but I used to frequent this little joint just to get their pavlova cake. They are SO good!!! The meringue is light and fluffy, with just the right amount of sweetness. They use fresh fruits and are generous in the portion. Can't remember the actual prices, but it wasn't expensive. Ambiance only gets a 2 because I remember it being this tiny little bakery with very little seating and it wasn't too esthetically-pleasing.
