We first came by Sweet Basil when we were on Marine Drive, hankering for something Asian. Would we go towards West Vancouver for some pho? Or would be go back towards Lonsdale for sushi, Indian, or mock Chinese food?
We glad to go to Sweet Basil, which had just opened at the time. A friend had recommended the chicken with cashew lunch special, and so we ordered that, along with the yellow curry with chicken. Since then, we've tried their egg plant dish, house curry with beef, shrimp with thai noodles, and their green curry with chicken. I'd have to say that the lunch special is definitely great value - it's the only thing we've ordered from!
The favourite has got to be the yellow curry with chicken. The lunch specials come with a spring roll and rice. Unfortunately, the restaurant only likes to have one waitress at the front of the house, which could make for a slight wait to have your order filled. However, the girl at the front, as well as the cook staff at the back, has always been efficient; I have never had to stay longer than 30 minutes for lunch. This is including the time where there was a ~20 person party.
That being said, I have never had Sweet Basil for dinner, nor have I ordered from the regular menu before. But that lunch special menu - excellent!
I've been searching for an authentic Thai place, and my search continues.
Sweet Basil is tucked away inside a shopping complex. The open air windows are excellent for a warm sunny day, and the restaurant was bright and cheerful. We were there for lunch, and service was prompt and courteous.
Lunch specials are aggressively priced at $7 for any item. One spring roll and rice are included. I picked Chicken Basil. This dish was too salty, and it had too much soy sauce or bean sauce, both of which shouldn't be present in the first place. It was absent of any Thai chili peppers even though I had ordered it extra hot. The sping roll was good, but there almost wasn't enough rice because the dish was so salty. Girlfriend wasn't impressed with her choice either.
I've had authentic Thai before, and this is not quite it. Sweet Basil is a fair place for a quick and inexpensive lunch, but I probably won't be back to try out the dinner menu.
Some office co-workers and I (even though we work downtown Vancouver) drive across for lunch and have been very happy both times! Service is quick and efficient and food is piping hot and just the way you order it. I love seeing the cooks working in the kitchen chopping fresh vegetables! Quick note--medium leans to more like spicy on the curry dishes. Spring rolls are tasty and you got alot of lunch for your money. One of our group eats here at least once a week for the past four years and says he's never had a bad meal. We will go back often! $6.95 for rice, spring roll and a bowl full of chicken curry... cheap and YUM! Go!
I have tried a lot of Thai food, and this place is a really great value for the money.
They dishes are inexpensive and large, and they taste great. We always have good service here.
Try the satay- it’s delicious. The curries are all good too; I particularly like the yellow curry with chicken.
Kind of hidden beside Save on Foods in Norgate, you have to seek them out.
Definitely worth a try!
This place is great. They have amazing value in their lunch specials. The quality is always high and the food is very consistent. I have eaten here dozens of times for lunch and it is now one of my favorite lunch places on the North Shore. The food here is much better than the Thai House and the prices are better too. I recommend you give this place a try if your looking for a great lunch at a great price. You won't be disappointed.
I was just in Sweet Basil to get some Tom Yum Gai soup to go. I've never eaten here, but I thought I'd give it try. The server was not really doing much of anything since there weren't more than 5 people in there, and I was waiting right by the till to give her my order. She still ignored me so I had to call her over so I could place my order. She rang in price, 8.90, I gave her a 10 and then had the nerve to ask me if I really wanted my change. I couldn't believe it!!! So, I said yes I do. She gave me a dime...and walked away. So, I called her back and said you still owe me a dollar. She looked me like she didn't quite understand me, so I repeated what I said. Then she did the old "ohhhhh, sorry" and gave me my dollar. Then I got my soup and just opened at home. It was nothing but tasteless, dishwater looking broth with 4 tomato chunks thrown in, few mushrooms and about 4 pieces of pounded thin chicken. Ick!!!!!!!!! I threw it out....I will never go back there again!!!! I recommend that no one go here for Thai!!!
