Sushi-man serves Japanese fast food.
Been here twice.
Food is OK but lots of imitation crab sticks are served, which is a pet peeve of mine. California rolls just aren't right that way and they also seemed to lack enough mayo. The fake crab trend started 15 years ago and was common but it seems almost all places these days have moved away from it, even fairly cheap places. Other than that food was OK.
Service is a bit tough to rate. Food order is taken quickly and food comes ridiculously quick, can't complain about speed. However, our main server (manager I think) doesn't really even look at you, smile, seems cold, etc. When he brought straws he slammed them into our drinks and startled us. It was actually a bit entertaining and funny. Just nothing at all like traditional japanese service. Some of the other servers looked a bit warmer than him however.
The prices are very cheap and portions decent. If you need a quick cheap sushi fix this might fit the bill. I wouldn't be one to frequent the place though as I'd rather have top quality service and food and pay a bit more for it at other places that fit that description.
I went to sushi man after work, it wasn't very busy at 7.30pm and decided to try it again.
I found if the server moved any faster, he would have broken the sound barrier and my hair would be blowing in the wind. The service was faster than two bunny rabbits, and lacked warmth, small chat and even caring how much I loved their smoked salmon nigiri. The faster my server moved to get me fed, the stop watch was ticking, and you could see in his head, "you're late, you're late" we need to get you moving.
I truly tried to enjoy my sushi, I wanted to have more smoked salmon nigiri, the other sushi was hard to enjoy. When I tried to talk to my server, it wasn't fast enough, since I took a breath.
If you're looking for cheap, semi decent sushi, with lightning super sonice speedy service, then its a spot you won't want to miss anytime soon.
I came here for lunch with another person. We were seated quite quickly. The Sun was pretty hot that day, and the restaurant was also pretty hot. But, right when we sat down, ugh, the table as sticky. The kind of sticky from being wiped with the same old dish towel. The place is pretty dated otherwise.
We ordered a Chicken Box, Dynamite Roll, Assorted Tempura, and Chicken Wings. The food came pretty quick, the only problem was they didn't think to bring any plates for us to eat with. Chicken box is a great deal. Comes with Terryaki Chicken, a California Roll, some rice, a few pieces of tempura, and some salad. We asked and they promptly provided.
The food was alright. I'm not a big Sushi connoisseur. Food that was hot, came out hot. The Rolls didn't fall apart when we ate them. Chicken wings were pretty standard. The Assorted Tempura had a good amount in it. Chicken Box hit the spot, skip the salad.
Servers are a bit clueless, but, not angry or mean in any way.
The price was quite unreal. All of that was just under 25 dollars. Pretty good deal if you ask me. Would I recommend this restaurant to others? Well, depends on who it is. For people who don't mind a greasy Spoon kinda restaurant, it's good. If you can't deal with sticky tables, well, this place isn't for you. If you love a smoking deal on some decent eats, I'd say this place is for you. It's Cheap, and, if that's all that matters to you, then that's all that matters.
Sushi-man on Marine Crive is something of a guilty pleasure. In our family it is single handedly responsible for the the decline and fall of the fast food burger. Actually maybe not such a guilty pleasure - even bargain basement japaenese food prepared in a very clean environment beats McDs and the like any day in my book.
Weekend shopping trips between Park Royal and Capilano Mall or MEC invariably include a quick lunch here. Lightning fast service - almost assembly line style for the basic lunch special rolls). Sushi special (tuna, Cali and yam rolls w/miso) and a teriyaki bento box come in at under $13 and are plenty for my wife, me and our 10 year old to share. Nothing special but in and out in 30 minutes (or less if you're in a real hurry). Sushi-man is becoming quite popular and is starting to challenge Gen Sushi on Lonsdale as best North Shore cheap Japanese.
Went there with my significant other for dinner at 8:30 pm on a Tuesday night, the waiting staff were quite rude, the chefs were pleasant though. The waitress told us that they closed at 9:30 pm and that we had to pay first and eat quickly but it was an hour before closing so we did not know why they were rushing us, when another couple had come in after us and were treated wel and not rushed (they were sitting beside us) However we knew what we wanted and ordered.
Food was alright, standard maki/bento boxes and such nothing special. We didn't receive water or tea, nor did the table have soya sauce and when we asked for it they never brought it over, my boyfriend had to get up and get it himself, after 15 minutes having not received water/tea and finished our rolls we decided to leave.
When we had paid earlier we decided not to leave a tip until we knew how the service/food was. We were kind of peeved over our experience, while my boyfriend went to the washroom one of the chef's asked how much we left for a tip (in cantonese) to the waitress, we had left $1 (I wanted to leave nothing), the waitress was mad i guess and said $1 and called us cheap in chinese, i was mad, what do you expect when you give us such bad service?
Overall, would not go back.
I have eaten here at least once a week for almost five years now so I think I'm qualified to review the establishment accurately. I'd like to start by saying how shocked I am at the bad reviews here. Some of the people reviewing it sound like they have never eaten at a sushi joint before. One person complained that the waitress didn't provide them with a plate...? Well, how did they bring the sushi to your table? That's called a plate where I come from. Anyway, on to the review....
Every time I enter, I'm immediately greeted by a server. I never have to wait for acknowledgement even if they are clearly very busy. The servers are very polite and don't bother you with redundant questions about how your day is going unless you initiate. You are brought complimentary green tea like most restaurants offer. Once you put down your menu they are always on top of things and come over to take your order right away. I always receive my food roughly within 4-10 minutes depending on how busy it is. One thing I really love is how I can call them for takeout when I'm literally two blocks away and it's ready by the time I arrive. Amazing.
The food quality is excellent compared to most of the establishments in Vancouver and it NEVER fluctuates. The price is perfect for what you get, which is alot... Try going to the sushi place in Caufield and then compare it with Sushi Man. You get three times as much at Sushi Man! The only other place I eat at on the Shore is Yuko Maki. The price and quality is just about the same there. I love them both but I highly recommend Sushi Man because it's my favourite of the two.
Being an easy person to please, I rarely have problems at a restaurant... but this was just wrong. My Nebeyaki Udon tasted like it was just plain water with eggs.. Being a cook myself, I've told my server of its taste. All I was looking for was... Let us make it right... or at least let me run it by my manager... Instead what I got was, a Loud Chinese "*itching" where not only the server, but the cook from the back and the manager with other employees giving me a dirty look for complaining... then the server came back and treated me like i didn't know what i was talking about (eventhough i understood everything they were saying), then charged me of the food that tasted like crap and which I took ONE sip of the soup for.
Being a cook myself, and a person who Loves to try new restaurants, expensive or cheap, all I look for is food that taste good for the $ I'm paying...
This will be one of very few number of times where I did not leave any tip (i've been a server too as a student before)... and Will be proactively telling My family and friends Not to go...
Sushi is Cheap and taste cheap...
anything either than sushi doesn't even taste like anything...
Went to this restaurant order takeout twice. The first time, I waited 30 minutes for my food. The place was not even busy. Patrons that came to eat in even got their food before me. I still can't figure that one out...considering that I even tipped when paying. I was pretty pissed...but I decided to chalk this up to bad luck. The second time I went in, I ended up having to wait 40 minutes for my takeout order to arrive. Do they treat takeout orders with less urgency or something? I got no apologies....just attitude. I usually give restaurants three strikes...but in this case it's not worth the grief.
This is just a message to KUJIBO. As far as service goes, and the manager not looking at you STRAIGHT in the eye....well, I think you should study a little bit on culture!!!!
Food is great, and service is PROMPT!! I don't need someone looking in my eyes and handing me straws with two hands. Let's not forget, this is a $10 (or less) restaurant!!! LOVE SUSHIMAN!
My husband and I have been regulars in the past - its convenient, quick service and offers reasonable prices. But lately we've been concerned about a general decline in cleanliness (you really won't enjoy a trip to the bathroom).
The last time we ate there, my husand (who likes to try different types of sushi and sashimi) was quite sick afterwards. Now we're looking for new sushi options on the North Shore. While we don't know for sure that it was Sushi-man's sushi that resulted in the sickness, the symptoms of food poisoning and the timing of our visit seemed too connected to be coincidental.
Overall, it's probably fine if you stick to their standard fare, and no denying the cheap prices - but I don't recommend anything adventurous - and make sure and use the washroom at home before you go.
i went here after finishing the grouse grind. THey churn out california rolls like a machine. The lunch boxes are a great deal. Very tasty. My lunch box included miso soup, beef teriyaki, california roll, salad, and fruit. I also ordered a BC roll which was quite good.
