Went for lunch here with a friend. We were looking for another sushi place but we noticed this place and gave it a try for lunch. They had some good bento box options and some nice pricing, at least for lunch. The menu had a lot of other options but we both settled for bento box (E)
Good service and decent ambiance there. The lunch was served pretty quickly and was your standard bento box fair. We had a solid lunch and would go there again, particularly with a larger group (there is a lot of room).
By the way, I was immediately impressed with the size of the glasses they use for serving water. Most restaurants, particularly asian ones (where the norm is drinking hot water or tea) use the smallest, wimpiest glasses when you ask for cold water. Here they gave some super size-glasses that lasted through the mail - a small thing I now... but it helps not having to wait for a refill in the middle of a spicy meal.
We have dined here many times. Ordered Take-out and Delivery since it opened. It was pretty good and reliable for a reasonable price. I don't know what happened. Early this year we ordered delivery... it took for ever to arrive. Then, the portions were smaller and the taste was...well, the Goma-Ae tasted rancid, the beef teriyaki was only two-thirds of a portion, the yam roll tasted off (old), the sashimi pieces were noticeably smaller. So...we thought it might have been an off-night overall. About a month later, we were visiting friends and got take-out and again disappointed. New owners! I hope they work out the kinks and get up to snuff!
Went here on a weekday for lunch and ordered one of the bento boxes. There are many to chose from and they are $2 cheaper during lunch time. Had a sashimi box and the fish was not cut very well, a bit too bit and all different sizes. The rice on the 3 pieces of sushi was too big and a bit on the hard side. It came with a Vietnamese spring roll which was over fried and unedible. Udon soup on the side and it was just OK. Overall a very poor effort for $9.50. The staff are all cantonese and they also have a chinese menu which is a signal for you to pass on this place. Service was just adequate and the place was pretty clean. Suggest you go next door to Sen Sushi where it's a mom and pop place for better sushi.
everything tastes old. their raw fish was super mushy, the rice was hard, and the seaweed is stiff and you can't even bite into it. the service is awful. never going back. don't recommend this place to anyone. the small sushi place next door is much better, go there instead.
This restaurant is on the site of the former Incogneato. Lonsdale has lots of sushi joints, but this new place is one of the larger ones. Since I always like to eat at new places, I decided to give it a try. The restaurant itself was nice and clean including the w/c, but we noticed some guys taking measurements inside, so I think they may be about to do some renovations.
When the friendly manager seated us she looked vaguely familiar. After a bit of conversation, she explained that she used to own a nearby restaurant but sold out and opened this place.
The menu has Japanese and Chinese dishes. After some deliberation I decided on ma po tofu on rice and a side of teriyaki beef roll. My beloved dining companion had a bento box with sushi, gyoza, beef teriyaki, tempura and salad. Service was good, and our teacups were kept full. All the food was tasty if not outstanding, and the price was right. We ate heartily for 18 bucks total. A good local spot for a quick meal.
I'll be back.
The Sushi Katsu is the only Japanese/Chinese place I know of where you can get a bottle of sake for only $3.50!!! add a plate of gyoza(7 fat pieces) for $3.95,and you're doing alright! Because the people running it are Chinese, they give bigger portions...the adashi tofu is huge! A lunch Bento box is great value for $7.50, better tasting than most and the fish is fresh and the size of the pieces are generous. Service is good but nothing to write home about. For the money it is great value and the food is very good.
I live less than a block away from Sushi Katsu and have been drawn there 4 times already in the last month. I like to go to different places and try different cuisines, but this place has brought me back like no other.
Why? The service has been consistent - friendly and timely. The appetizers are well-priced. They have the best Horenso Goma-ae I've had in a decade (spinach with sesame), great gyoza, a sinfully good Oyster Motoyake (incorrect spelling!) and perfect tempura. My favourite is their 'Beef Sashimi.' The first time I ordered it, the chef and two waiters came out together to ask how I wanted it prepared. I asked for medium rare and that's what I got. It comes with a Ponzu sauce and is great to share.
The sushi and sashimi are fresh, but I noticed a little warm - they may have been placed on a hot counter after they were made. Still good though. The Udon soups are tasty and they provide ones of those tasty little shakers of Japanese seasoning to spice it up. Their Bento boxes are excellent value and are satisfying and tasty.
Dinner for 2 with 2 beers and sake - $50. I know I'll be back.
The only complaint I have is their hours. It's currently open until 10pm. I usually go out at 9 or so, and I have seen many people come to Sushi Katsu close to 10 and be turned away . Lonsdale needs venues to wine and dine and I'd love to see them open until midnight. They'd get the business for sure!
Been to all the sushi's downtown, thought I'd try something different. Read about Sushi Katsu and liked the menu so tried it out. WOW. So delicious. We ordered dragon roll and lonsdale roll with bbq eel with some crazy special sauce. it looked so delicious and tasted amazing. The service was a bit so slow cause they were busy and only had 3 waitresses, but they were very nice.
I recommend this place if you live in downtown or north and want excellent quality with reasonable prices. only thing we didn't like is they ran out of sapporo beer, :-/
Decided to try out this new restaurant that used to be Incognetos. The food is delicious. Ordered the Nigiri Combo 1 for $8.50. Rice is fresh and the fish was excellent. Good presentation of the dishes and the ambiance was nice. Food was very well prepared which shows the chefs care. The only downside was the actual server. She seemed very indifferent of my presence and didn't care to even look at me. She constantly seemed in a rush and would serve with annoyance. Girlfriend and I felt like we were in her way. The other 3 tables around us also seemed upset with lack of care from the server and were trying a few times to get their bill. Over all its a good spot for your sushi fix but that one server needs to improve. Great choice for take out!
I went here a few days ago, and this restaurant is actually bigger than most. We were seated in the farther section, kind of on the other side of the main building, where it was quiet. It was a nice place, more privacy for us. Our server got us drinks very quickly and gave us menus. I got the Bento Box B, portions will definitely fill you up! We had to walk up to the counter to get our server to come and take our order though, after waiting for 10 minutes at the table.
The food quality was good overall. The tempura was crispy and light coloured (good, they change their oil often). The chicken teriyaki was on a bed of bean sprouts and was very tasty. The salad was dressed with a sort of vinaigrette dressing, but mine was drowned in it. Even after I had finished the salad, it seemed to be like a milky pool of salad dressing in that particular salad box. The california rolls that came with the box were good and the fried gyozas were tasty as well.
After finishing our meal, I had to walk up to the counter to pay even though we had waited for a while. Nobody was there though, so I waited a for maybe 2 minutes back at my table and the manager came over and placed the bill on the table. It was $14 for two people.
I'll come back.
