I too am sooo sad that Sen Sushi has closed down! We've been getting our sushi every weekend from Sen Sushi, they had the best sushi for the best price. A family favourite! What happened?? Can't believe they are no longer there... :( Have tried so many other sushi take-outs in North Van, and no-one else competes.

A great local sushi place

We eat here at least a couple times a month. There have been allot of crappy sushi restaurants that have opened and closed on Lonsdale over the years. Sen Sushi has been on Lonsdale for more then a decade outlasting the local competition.

Its abit small inside with a few tables and the decore kinda needs a bit of an upgrade. The entire restaurant is operated by husband and wife. They have a simple setup that works. The food output is always consistent, fresh, awesome value and good service. I love this place!

Best takeout on the way to YVR
By highgravity of Toronto (1 Review)

on the recommendation of friends we stopped by Sen Sushi on the way to fly home from YVR.
Spent $20, got lunch and dinner for 4. The Alaska roll is incredible.
They're quick, a great value, and delicious. We were the ENVY of our fellow passengers on the flight home.
Would recommend 100%

decent cheap sushi

Mrs. C and I just got back from a big trip to China and we were craving sushi because it is difficult to find a decent sushi joint in Nanjing, for example...

Sen was very plain looking and rather tiny inside, but the place seemed clean enough and the server/manager was super friendly and efficient. The menu was quite extensive, and the prices were unbelievably low. This place seemed to do mostly takeout, but we sat in. The restaurant closes at 8:30 pm most nights and it is not a spot for a midnight snack.

We had a variety of sushi including a decent spicy tuna roll, Cali roll, nigiri sushi, etc. We accompanied it with miso soup and some teriyaki chicken and shrimp which were quite tasty. I would say the sushi was pretty good, but not life-changing. That said, we found the food to be much better than other places we have visited in this price range.

I would definitely return for more!

Recommended.

Nice Take out Tray

Decided to try Sen Sushi for a take out tray. X-mas lunch at the office and everybody likes sushi. Gave them a budget of $30 and 2 trays came, 1 cooked and 1 uncooked. A good idea to separate the rolls this way. For the price, there were plenty of rolls. Even non sushi eaters seemed to enjoy the cooked rolls. Very well prepared. They even give 10% off for 1 hour notice for trays. A good option for that office party. Great husband and wife team and this place stands out along the sushi filled Lonsdale. Only drawback is the ambiance which is just very basic.

The best hole in the wall
By yaletownboy of NVan (1 Review)

Recently moved to the North Shore and being Japanese, it's often difficult to find good japanese food. Even more difficult finding a Japanese owned restaurant.

Although this place is not run or owned by Japanese people, the husband/wife business does have their regular clientelle. The husband is the cook and the food is good!

Went there for lunch with a friend and ordered a tuna don, dragon fly roll, 2 pork and 1 shrimp gyoza. Gyoza was not "Japanese" shaped but more Chinese. However, it was still good to eat and the shrimp gyoza at $3.50 is a steal!

My friend ordered a special sushi platter and had ample food with his miso soup. The wife commented that we ordered a lot of food but this is often what I can eat. All this for less than $35! Gave them a $7 tip.

Overhead something about the husband and chemo and we hope we heard wrong but if it is true, we wish this couple all the best as the restaurant will be missed when they have to close. Difficult to run when it's just the 2 of them but if it's open, my suggestion is to try them asap.

The place is small and has probably about 4 small tables. As other reviews state, most tend to take out.

Best maki rolls I've had!
By Mini D. of North Vancouver (1 Review)
Submitted Wednesday, October 20, 2010 - 5:01pm [Dine in]

I've been going to Sen ever since my boyfriend took me there 3 years ago. They have the BEST maki rolls I've ever had. All the other sushi places I've tried don't even come close.

They use only wild salmon for their sashimi and nigiri which is so fresh and beautifully cut that it just melts in your mouth.

They really care about their customers and are very friendly. Whenever I have friends visiting the North Shore I always take them to this place and they're amazed at how good the sushi is.

Forget the Ambiance thing! That's it....throw it out....you'll be fine.

I've had Sushi just about everywhere. I've been checking out Sen Sushi since they opened. I go there all the time with family or with friends. Can't beat it. I repeat, Can't beat it. I've even checked out the HUGE Sushi Katsu restaurant next door. My kids said it well, "bad service, Yucky Sushi."

As for Sen Sushi....
No, I'm not worried for Sen Sushi.
No, this is not a romantic place for a candle light dinner.
No, they don't have a liquor licence.
Yes, you do have to go thru the kitchen to get to the washroom.
No, you won't find better service or value anywhere.
Yes, the sushi is surprisingly good.
Yes, their Take Out is the best anywhere.

You'll see.

My favorite little sushi place!
By zombiefruits of North Vancouver, B.C. (3 Reviews)
Submitted Thursday, March 18, 2010 - 1:05pm [Dine in]

I love Sen sushi because the food is good, the fish is fresh, and the service is wonderful.
I've tried the lamb teriyaki and personally I wouldn't get it again, as it wasn't great lamb. Too dry. It was interesting, though.
I finally tried the fried tofu and eggplant, and it was a lovely starter. It came in a really delicious sauce.

The sushi is good! Not the very best I've ever had, but outstanding for the price. The ebi sunomono actually comes with nigiri type ebi, not those little shrimps you often find in cheap sunomono.

Sen is my go-to place for sushi. Not good for a fancy type dinner, but great for everyday sushi, takeout and a casual lunch or dinner.

I can't understand why Sushi Katsu next door seems to be more busy, as their food is awful and more expensive than Sen.

Great little joint

I eat from Sen Sushi about once every couple of weeks. I give them a call, get in the car and the takeaway order is ready for me when I arrive.

The other reviews are right. This little hole in the wall offers great food at awesome prices. The fish is always fresh, and everything I've had from here has been great. I usually get a gomaae (sp?), some nigiri sushi, sunomono and the tuna tataki. Never a complaint, especially when you take a look at your bill. The prices are unbelievable.

The couple who run the shop are always friendly and personable. I completely understand why this little place has such a fan base.

Best take out sushi on Lonsdale
By zapatista234 of North Vancouver (10 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, February 28, 2010 - 7:22am [Dine in]

Where I live by Lonsdale I can easily walk to at least 7 sushi joints. I have tried most of them, but so far this is my favorite. There are a couple of reasons for this: the selection is good, the fish is fresh, and it's a total value. The woman who takes the order is always happyu to explain the special rolls, and greets you with a smile when you pick up your food. I have never had to wait beyond the time I was told it would be ready. If you're willing to wait an hour after you order, let the woman know and it'll be 10% off.

As far as the restaurant itself, like I said, it's a takeout, so no frills at all. But if you're looking for good sushi at a good price without a long wait, this is the place! It's easy to miss, it's tiny. Also, one drawback is they're closed on Sunday.

A True Hidden Gem of the North Shore

Sen Sushi is a small Sushi Joint Located on the ever crowded lonsdale strip. It is a true "hole in the wall" place, which is pretty hard to see from driving by. It is ironically located right beside a giant sushi restaurant called Sushi Katsu which is around 6 times the size of it!!! Sen Sushi though is truly a hidden gem, with unbelievable prices. One of the cheaper sushi places I know, yet one of the best. Their gomaee is great, serve fresh sashimi, have creative rolls, great combos, great party trays as well! Only a couple tables, most of their business is take out, but still a nice place to eat in. It is run by a Wife and Husband who are very nice and like to get to know their customers. All in all Sen Sushi is a great little place that has the perfect mix of affordability and quality. Check it out you will be truly surprised!

Favorite restaurant for take out

This is absolutely my favorite Japanese restaurant for take out. It might not be a great dine-in restaurant, but sushi tastes incredible. Specially, Party trays (I personally like Tray B the most) are inexpensive but contains a great deal of Nigiri sushi and roll sushi. You cannot imagine the great food from the look from outside, but this family own restaurant is worth a try!

Best Japanese Food on the North Shore

A little daunting, as it looks like a mall kiosk, but everyone seems to say that. As we walked in someone walking out said "That was the best F***n Sushi I've ever had!" So we thought we'd try it. Well the gentleman who said that was right!
All of the menu items are amazing and everything is prepared so well. As it is family run you are always guaranteed an excellent meal, as you always have the same great chef.
The service is exquisite and you will never be short of tea or water (and it is good tea).
And the bill at the end is always a pleasant surprise. It is the best value for money of anywhere around and you always leave happy and full.

We now go a couple times a week, and when we bring people they always agree how amazing it is.

Mediocre sushi, but inexpensive.
By Craigs of North Vancouver (1 Review)

A very small place with mediocre sushi. Long grain rice is used as opposed to traditional sushi rice, and is done passably. Vinegar on some dishes is overdone. But the price is very competitive, if you're on a budget. We've eaten in a number of the nearby sushi restaurants, and this is our least favorite, but probably the least expensive.

Most Impressive Sushi in North Van!

A quaint, smaller restaurant - but don't let this fool you. The warm hospitality and phenomenal food will turn you into a loyal customer. I was certainly skeptical at first, not having enjoyed many of the Japanese restaurants in North Van - but I have to say this place is the winner. It's small, but very clean and feels "homey" and comfortable.

And the prices.. well.. the two of us left extremely full WITH leftovers and the bill was only $20.00. Outstanding.. 5 Stars!!

The Hidden Gem in North Vancouver

Submitted Sunday, May 27, 2007 - 11:42pm [Dine in]

I think we were one of their first customers so long ago. And every since, rarely a month goes by that we do not eat there at least once. That was three years ago.

This is a tiny restaurant which is not much to look at from the outside, or inside for that matter. Clean, but with sparse furnishings and decorations. A husband / wife team who are very friendly. Their menu is VERY limited. There is almost no hot food - almost the entire menu is sushi and sashimi.

But oh... WHAT MAKI ROLLS! My wife and I love Japanese food. We have tried every single sushi place on Lonsdale, places in Vancouver, Richmond and places dotted across the country. And there are no finer maki rolls ANYWHERE. PERIOD. When my family come in from out of province, THIS is the place they want to eat. Not the Cannery, not the William Tell, not Tojo's or Maurya - no, they want to eat at Sen Sushi. When I fly over to visit them - they ask me to stop in Sen and bring them an order! (BE CAREFUL - Raw fish generally does not travel well).

You can get bigger, you can get more expensive, you can get weirder combinations elsewhere. But when you want simple, down to earth, TASTY maki rolls... this is the place. Their rolls are delicately and skillfully packed with just enough rice, and *small* enough to fit the entire thing in your mouth and absolutely delicious. So many sushi places have rolls that come to the table falling apart, or bloated with too much rice to make the rolls look bigger. Not Sen Sushi.

Here is what I would recommend, my favourites:

Dragon Roll
Spider (soft shelled crab) Roll.
Alaska Roll.
Spinach Gommae.
Tuna Gommae.

Yes, something else, just to top it all off, not only do they have the best maki, the also have the BEST Spinach Gommae.

This place is delicious, our favorite restaurant in Vancouver. Huzzah!

Tasty, Fresh, Flavorful & at Great prices :)
By FOOD-DISCERNER of Vancouver (18 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, March 8, 2009 - 1:07am [Dine in]

Planned a takeout with 4 adults and 2 children. Ordered a party tray + tuna maki + salmon maki + oshinko maki + 3 spinach gommae.

It was YUM - O ! Everyone was paying compliments to the chef at home as we tucked into the food. The rolls had different ingredients - the results were tasty, textureful and someone commented that they are not the usual run-of-the-mill sushi served at those many sushi establishments plugged along the Lonsdale artery.

Sen Sushi may look very humble from the outside, but hey, service was friendly and flexible and food's great. And the total cost for all the above? only $31 . What a deal :) We have become converts.

We've only lived in North Vancouver for the past 4 years now and have always been looking for a good if not decent sushi place. Other than Hamaei in Westview which is great but not 'cheap' it has been hit and miss. Just this past weekend we finally tried Sen Sushi after I had seen reviews of it on this website. Walking by the restaurant it is very modest at best for ambiance and right next to a newer bigger sushi place that has better ambiance at least from outside the restaurant.

Anyways, we thought we give it a try and went in to dine for lunch. Initial impression of the place wasn't all that favourable. The place is narrow and the concrete block walls remind you a little of confined jail cells (though never have been in one of course!). We were one of three tables to dine-in making up half the restaurant and as we ordered a couple of more customers came in to grab their take-out and leave. One of them seemed to know the owners by first name so that was encouraging for us to stay and give it a go.

Initially we were a little skeptical in ordering anything 'raw' as again we were not sure if we should risk that chance. But we stuck to our guns and ordered the salmon and toro sashimi as you can never really judge a good sushi place unless you've had their sashimi. On the menu it stated that they only server wild sockeye salmon and that is what we got. Plating was nice and the fish appeared to be fresh. Once we got over our nerves we tried it and to our most pleasant 'surprise' it was very good if not excellent. The salmon was as good as any other 'good' place we've tried (including Hamaei) and the Toro was outstanding! It was very buttery and delicately smooth. I suppose 'fatty' tuna should be!? Anyways, all the other menu items we ordered were also very good if not great. We had a very pleasant experience apart from the initial nerves of trusting the reviews on this site. I would highly recommend the place and it really is a quick lunch spot to go to and I can see why they are a great take-out place to get sushi from. Everything was fresh. They must be busy completing take-out orders! Call them, pick up your order and take it home... you'll be thoroughly pleased.
