Birthday beers & dining out whilst watching the hockey
By Kelvin_Brown of North Vancouver, BC (11 Reviews)

We went on Tues. for birthday beers & something to eat. The beer was OK, the service was basis. There appeared to be only one waitress serving a whole pub full of customers, so as a consequence service was slow. The lass in question was a little inexperienced too, but was trying hard.

The food was basic too. I would have liked the Guinness & steak pie, but this I was told had sold out, so I opted for the NY steak sandwich / burger. When the food came the (medium-rare) steak was tepid, while the chips (fries) & onion rings were hot, suggesting the steak had been sitting around waiting to be served. I sent the meal back to be re-heated & was rewarded with a few extra chips. However, the steak tasted as if it had been grilled on a recently sanitised hot plate. mmm ! Suspicious ! Not great. The battered onion rings were oily & basic.

Nevertheless, the pub was very popular. Most people had come to watch the hockey, the loud coverage of which made conversation difficult.

The place is conveniently located in Lower Lonsdale, has an affordable range of menu items, but whilst the beer & alcoholic beverages were OK, the standard of the food is sadly lacking.

Really bad service

I was there for a casual Friday for a few drinks and I must say the service was terrible and the food was worst. I wasn't expecting much as we decided to go because we were in the area. The waitress was not attentive and very unprofessional. The nachos were soggy and the beer was served in what I considered a dirty pitcher. All in all a must miss. Don't bother with this place.

Great view to have lunch

I have been going here for years, when I want to relax, meet with friends or watch sporting events & eat, this is the spot.

I had their chicken fingers with fries, with a pepsi, and my food came quickly, very hot and fresh. My meal came to $13.00 plus tip, which isn't bad for lunch and to watch the Olympics.
I find their cheese burgers, roastbeef dip, steak to large nancho's that friends need to share, are some of the menu items I've tried. The food I find is constantly good, this is why I come here.
I like the service, friendly and I like their food when I go there to have lunch.

Friendliest place in the Lower Mainland

I don't know how this place can be rated a 3 as how pubs go. The staff is amazing and the food is top notch as far as variety in a Pub setting. Mondays you can go in and have a 6 oz very tender sirloirn steak sandwich for 4.95 which is a great deal. The cooks go the extra mile.
The first time in there I ordered a spanish coffee without whip cream and pitchers of black label. A few days later when I went back, the waitress remembered everything! Even the no whip cream which I forgot to ask for.

All and all one of the best places to go in Vancouver to watch the game or just to hang out and shoot a game of pool. A bonus for you smokers is there is a heated patio outback where you can smoke, and a tv also!

I didn't rate everything a 5 only because well I rarely ever give full credit!

Average Pub in North Van

Sailor Hagar's has a great view and is spacious and well lit inside. The service was average.

Despite this, the food has been consistently a disappointment. The chicken ranch pizza was terrible. It was just a thin crust with a few pieces of chicken and a few mushrooms, not much flavour. The pesto chicken burger was served on a very low quality bun which turned soggy quickly. The shephard's pie was under spiced and lacked overall floavour. Compared to some of other pubs that serve excellent food in the area, we were very disappointed.

Okay for a pub

I sure wish pubs would be more innovative with their menus. Hagar's has a wonderful location and view....food is just average. Their wit ale was good though. They've really cut back on the number of microbrews that they offer.
